Depends on the metrics. I'm sure Apple makes oodles more money with the iPhone and related stuff (content, accessories) than Google is making with Android and related stuff.
1- You seem to think less qualified people can easily update and extend code that would have been too hard for them to think up in the first place. I'm doubtful.
2- To me, bloatware is software that has too many features, not fat code. Fat code is kinda bad, but not as bad as unmaintainable code.
3- I'm not sure re-use rate for code people don't feel confident they can understand, edit, maintain, is going to be much better than for so-so code they feel more confident with ?
4- Ten years ago, there were much fewer programmers, working on much fewer programs with much smaller feature sets on much fewer platforms. It's like saying 50 years ago, airplane pilots knew how to care for and fix their airplanes, not just fly them, and with much assistance. Yes, things have moved ahead since then. Your point is ?
Imagine the real-life scenario: you don't have to scale that much, say up to 20 servers. Very few apps actually run on more than that. Factor in the extra costs of buying and running those extra servers.
Now, Imagine indeed switching languague/platforms, buying fewer servers, but having to hire more expensive talent, and more of it.
You need a whole lot of servers before talent comes out less expensive than hardware.
When is the last time you even noticed javascript speed ? I don't, never have, probably never will.
There's a bunch of things I want from a browser, and a bunch of improvements I'd like. Speed isn't one of them, and it's kinda sad that, as always, the simplicity of a be-all end-all perf number overshadows everything else and dumbs down the debate. I would have hoped that Apple's success would have transferred over to Software in general, and open-source in particular: performance doesn't really count, features neither, what we want is the right features (not more of them), and above all, usability.
A legal battle around a patent costs a lot of money, time and energy. A huge majority of developers cannot afford any of those 3 , let alone all of them. So even an invalid patent can be quite efficient in neutering a market.
because Apple are limiting themselves too much with the One True Form-Factor. Some people want a keyboard, either palm-style or N900-style, some people want a bigger screen, some want a smaller device (though the iPhone 4 is getting small), and some a more rugged one. No matter how good the iPhone gets, most people I know just won't consider it because of the form factor issue. I for one want a larger screen (my HD2's is 44% bigger by area than the iPhone's, I'm strongly considering a Dell Streak, 99% larger), above all other considerations.
All the rest (features, locked-ness, looks) can be argued about. Form-factor is a very straightforward issue, and there's a reason why there are so many different ones on the market.
As a geek, I really don't like Apple's products or policies. I can see some value to them for the general public, though, especially when comparing with the competition, and keeping in mind that performance is not that important anymore, because it's "good enough", while is of use is very important, because computers are not reserved to geek anymore:
iPad: what other tablet can you get from a reputable company for that price ? iPhone: when 1.0 came out, what other choice was there ? WinMob 5.0 ? I had it, hated it, and I'm a geek. Even my current Winmob 6.5 is very quickly unergonomic, and I've been told Android is worse. My 4yr old nephew knows how to get to his dad's iPhone's balloons game. Portable macs: i'm looking for a laptop for my niece. Apple's are the only ones with a large touchpad, or a solid feel, or an attractive design I could find in the large store I went to. iMacs: I actually find them ugly for a living room (kitchen white ? really ?), but others are not much better, especially with all those idiots Intel Windows stickers. Mini: imagine a Dell Zino vs MacMini beauty contest. 'nuff said.
so you can get the gist. Once again, the site is http://www.27bslash6.com/ , I personally like it, but not everyone will, or should.

How are my stats corrupted ? Is all data that does not fit your convictions automatically "not good enough" ?
If you want to disprove that more guns = more guns deaths and more guns accidents and more deths in total, you'll have to do the work, and it's gonna be a bit more work than "I don't like your data".
You obviously like ad hominem attacks and arguments better than data. Most of the truth is in the data, though.
"Although the incidence of child abuse and neglect has been decreasing in recent years, more than 1.25 million, or 1 in every 58 children in the United States, were abused in 2006."

2- someone with with a sudden yearning to die and a gun will probably shoot themselves. Same personn with only pills will probably take pills. Guess the survival rates. BTW, this applies for homicidal rage, too.
please do feel free to offer your better, more complete stats. And please remark that, as opposed to other participants in the discussion, I do offer some stats, and debunk the only number "they" had giben (100 accidents with guns / yr, when in reality it's 1,500)
Congratz, you're snap bang at the core of Apple's market: people who can't tell a phone from an MP3 player.
It comes with peach-colored sleeves, too !
Depends on the metrics. I'm sure Apple makes oodles more money with the iPhone and related stuff (content, accessories) than Google is making with Android and related stuff.
I'm fairly sure RIM is, too.
which is not quite the same as a standard dock/charger with keyboard, mouse, lan, sound, charger... connectivity.
You're wrong on both assumptions, and by much. I can take good "gay" jokes too, though. Not that all of them are good, but some are.
come on, i'm gay, and it made me chuckle.
uptight much ?
Are the Oil companies required to monitor the use you make of your car once you've put their oil in it ?
does anyone actually know is exposure to litterature/films... trivializing or glorifying violence leads to more violence ?
if yes, why is it allowed on TV ?
if no, what about sex ? should it be allowed too ?
I have several issues with what you're saying.

At one point in your life, you'll realize that maintainability > performance 99.9% of the time.

Get a clue, and stop wanking over numbers.
most people "know themselves well enough to know...".
Except they don't.
You're a murderous asshole, too.
Bad users ! always wanting to do stuff with that beautiful software with designed !
nope.

there's plenty of much smaller companies that offer a gaggle of different form factors.

does anyone have numbers about safe roaming distance ? my guess is it's ever-increasing, as is parental hysteria over danger.
