They made the choice to take out the big loans and now they're bitching about the terms they signed. Boo hoo.
And yes, big student loans are a choice. I worked full time 6 days a week and took classes at night where I could squeeze them in. It took me longer to get there, but I came out the other end with a minimum of student loans that I then paid off in a couple of years. (and no, there was no walking through the snow)
From the employer's point of view, certain things in a credit report (or other parts of a background check) can be indicative of a pattern of irresponsible behavior. If I'm hiring you to empty the trash cans that may not be such a problem. If I'm hiring you for a position that entails a lot more responsibility it's something else entirely.
To be clear, yes I think the people turned down should be told exactly why they have been turned down, but that doesn't mean that background checks aren't a useful and legitimate tool for employers. If I see "Lost his job, got behind on credit cards and entered credit counselling" that's not a huge red flag. That kind of thing happens. If I see a multiple reports of defaulting on a lease, lots of late payments over many years, etc.. I'm going to think twice.

Funny thing is, in the US it is exactly the other way round. Dozens of firearms in the house, even automatic ones? Hey, no problem!
Not exactly true. As someone who owns "dozens" of firearms (currently at 26 because I haven't sold 4 I don't want anymore, so yeah...) and is reasonably familiar with the relevant laws, obtaining an automatic firearm is not as easy as many people would like to believe. It's involves a substantial background check, getting permission from your local law enforcment, and several other obnoxious hoops. The process is time consuming, somewhat complicated and quite expensive. The laws affecting automatic weapons have made them an exceptionally pricey hobby. I could easily point you at many lower-end models that would cost me as much as my entire collection of bolt action, lever action, pump action, revolving, and semi-automatic firearms.
Of all the people I know that play (or used to play) paintball, not one of them even owned guns.
In my experience that's because most people who own and shoot real guns find that shooting a paintball gun just doesn't compare. Recoil therapy - it's a great stress reliever.
... do a little checking. And social networking sites have to be taken into account.
I will say this: if you're applying for a job in law enforcement, I don't care how good your resume looks. When we google your name and up pops your MySpace page, detailing your love for the mighty marijuana plant, complete with pictures showing you ingesting it in many interesting ways, you're not getting the job.
A mil spec iPod would be too heavy to move without a Humvee and too expensive to give to anyone under the rank of Captain.
Cute, but you can buy consumer cell phones that meet mil spec for shock, dust, etc.. I have one now and I'm about to get a new one. (the old one still works, but I've had it several years now and want something a bit newer.) They aren't much bulkier or heavier than the non-rugged counterparts, and aren't significantly more expensive either.
The 3D in Coraline was awful. In some scenes there was no 3D, in other scenes it noticeable, and in yet other scenes I saw multiple overlapping images instead of 3D.
Ever since they first tried it in the 50's, Hollywood keeps trying to go back to 3D. Every time it still sucks.

since they're generally not allowed to take out loans and sell bonds like the fed can.
Local municipalities issue bonds all the time, hence the term "municipal bond."
I don't have a problem with spending on education, but this is supposed to be an emergency economic stimulus package. If it's not directly related to the task at hand it has no business in the bill.
To the Congressional Republicans, things like school construction won't result in jobs for construction workers: apparently magic pixies will simply drop the new schools out of the sky in exchange for our money.
No, money for schools would come from the taxes paid to their local governments by construction workers who have jobs as a result of the stimulus package.
Well, that and the fact that much of the industrial capacity of the western world was demolished during the course of the war except for ours.

The usa just voted in its first black president, in the netherlands people went nuts when rotterdam recently got its first morrocan born mayor. Dutch tolerance is a myth.
Make that "European tolerance is a myth" and you're closer. I've lived in Europe and all around the US. Germans, Brits and the rest of Europe are some of the most openly racist people I've ever met. The only place I've lived that was worse for racism is Japan.
But then many stereotypes are blown away if you actually pay attention. A close friend of mine will be the first person to stand up and tell you she experienced more racism directed against her while living in California and Oregon than she ever has when she lived in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama (where she now resides).

I take it you don't plan to connect a Nintendo DS or Wii video game system or an iPod Touch or iPhone handheld computer to the Internet. They have a Wi-Fi radio but no Ethernet jack.
I'm not a console gamer. I have a PS3 but I use it as a DVD/Blu Ray player and media streamer. I use an iPod classic for my music and my cell phone is just a cell phone. Not even a camera.
These things may change in the future. If they do I'll figure something out.
I'm not ripping the walls out, nothing that ambitious. It's more a case of "We're ripping up carpet to put down laminate. Well, while the room is empty let's paint it. If I'm going to do that I might as well pull some speaker wire through the attic for some surrounds in the living room." While I'm at it I'm pulling cat5e through the attic and fishing it through the walls in a couple of key locations. If you're not comfortable doing that, then hire a local handyman type of person. In the current economy they need little jobs too.
... people will have problems using cell phones while driving?
Oh darn. That's just horrible.

Someone tell the FBI director it's safe for him to log on again.
If they could make it work it sounds like it would be a great material for a bullet resistant vest.
Although getting hit with a taser while wearing one ...

Good to know. Thanks.
