Actually you can see the list of links. just click on the link below and there you go. Didnt find anything interesting but I only went through the first few pages.
Well at least in the one that they showed at school there is the famous "ass" scene where R&J are getting out of a bed in the morning after a night of wild passion. Considering that at the time that this was made R&J would have been around 14 and possibly as young as 12 that seems like child porn to me. And they showed this to me in high school no less.
Actually I work for Dell and Dell is really not a bad call center to work at. I work for major accounts so it might be different where you are going but I have full power to fix just about anything that comes onto my phone. Call times are highly watched but the "goals" are fair and very doable (1 call for 16.75 minutes). If you are on a call for very long a escalation tech will come up and ask to help. You are expected to fix any problems that come to you as well. Our major criteria for the jobs are our Customer Service and technical audits. The escalation technicians are quite knowledgeable (well at least half of them are.) If you are a good technician you will be promoted and get raises.
Mind you I have also worked for some horrible call centers. I worked for GTE/Verizon for a while on Out-source ISP help. We had four accounts and (literally) no training. They would sit you in with someone like me for a day and expect you to start hitting the numbers the next day. I would sleep and answer the calls we got in at the same time (no joke.) I quit when we got a canadian MLM scheme internet provider. I couldnt stand to hear "Why isnt the internet working. What is this aboot eh! I wont tu speek to your soopervisor eh!"
They didnt. They are out of business now. For the time they were up I can tell you from personal experiance (I used to do tech support for them) by having extremely inexpensive computers and selling to first time computer users.
End user forgets his password to his portable system. Calls me (portables tech support) and I have to tell him that there is nothing that I can do to help him. Now he has to loose all that nice data that he has been working on for so long because anything that could crack a NT password is now illegal.
But in the world of ST there is one more thing to add. To get that vote your average wwf viewer has to LIVE through several years of highly technical and intence combat. Just to be a grunt took more technical expertise than at least 75% of the people on Slashdot let alone the rest of the general US population. More importantly it made sure that you had spent a few years building something. The government that you had a vote in you also had a vested interest in. The idea is that with this interest into what goes into it you will understand that you cannot steal from paul to pay peter all the time.
And what REAL effect would that be? Did he do anything to end hunger, No not really. Yes he did do a lot to get britian off of Indias back but his campaign couldnt have worked without all of the wars that had weakened the british empire in the first place. So, What did he do. Also I said he was the only one with any at all real effects. Unlike so many others that didnt really do shit. (JC pops up first in my mind).
In ST anyone at all could have gotten a franchise to vote. One also did not need to join the military. The reason Rico did have to join the military to get a vote was because he was not exactly the sharpest tack in the box. He couldn't even make it into the more technical aspects of the military, he was stuck as a (self described) grunt. The point of the whole book was to say that maybe not everyone deserves a vote. In later writings Heinlein proffessed that he rather liked this idea. He included Giving all mothers the vote (and noone else). Also thought about a mathamatical test (and then nixed the idea.) Also quite a few other ideas. Personally I think it just might be what our country needs.
Getting back to your post tho, How is this facist or dictatorial. Any *CAN* get the vote if they care enough to put in community service to the whole of society. I dont see what is wrong with this and it stops up the old marxism,("Democracy fails when people realize that they can vote more money for themselves"), by making anyone with a vote realize that they cannot vote more money for themselves without STEALING. Sounds like a pretty good workaround for the major failing of a democracy to me.
Your right. He did believe these things and in a lot of ways he was very right. Throughout history there has never been a peaceful revolution. The old regimes have always been kicked out through brute force. The only even partially succesful peaceful leader I can think of would be Ghandi and he had very little real effect on the world. Violence has brought out many good things. Lets see, democratic/republic governments as opposed to fuedal monarchy's. The fall of facism in Europe. The fall of communism in europe. The fall of aparthied. ect ect ect.
Dont get me wrong here. Personally I am a pacafist in my own life and own no guns and never really want to. However Heinliens appeal is in making a stronger and more meaningful wo/man a reality. The women in his novels do not just drop thier drawers for any man out there but they are lusty and admit it. This is opposed to hiding thier genitailia and sexual feelings. All in all most of Heinliens works are a part of a utopian fantasy of how the human race *could* be if they would stop lieing so much.
For another opinion on the boom in San Fran try to find a copy of Jello Biafras Spitfire tour speach. I was able to get a copy on scour (they aren't coming to my hometown:() From what I have been able to see the city of San Francisco is being turned into a yuppie wasteland where all of the people who made San Fran San Fran cannot live there anymore. No more hippies or punks or street trash. Having grown up in california this is a horrible waste of a beautiful thriving underground community that in many ways started the entire computer social revolution. Hell the EFF headquarters are there. So please, if you are one of these hackers with bouco bucks, do the same thing. Try to help your city have a certian amout of culture and style instead of letting it turn into a blasted wasteland of IBM and Intel buildings.
Since napsters file library is on my hard drive shouldn't napster pay me 1$ per megabyte that I am contributing to thier business model? Or maybe the record companies should pay me for the free advertising they get off of my collection of MP3s on my hard drive. Also don't forget that I am providing a filtering service (anythiong that I think is crap is deleted) so I should be getting paid for that as well. Hmmmmm....
On a more serious note I do have a question. Is there any reason at all that I should pay for my Bill Hicks MP3s. Since he has no direct decendants the record label is making all of the money off of him and they didn't contribute a single fucking thing to his career. So there is no good reason I should pay them for someone elses work. Ahh yes. I think I will pop in my burned copy of Arizona Bay right now and laugh my ass off and go abot my day.
How about the right to property. Under the DMCA we no longer have the right to do with our property as we wish. And before you mention that property is not in the constitution it has long been held that the Pursuit of Property is the correct translation for the pursuit of happiness. Also has been held up in several supreme court cases going back to Madison.
However, previous to the DMCA you would have the right to clean room reverse engineer the Windows API and release what you found out from that. Under the DMCA if MS encrypts that data using something like say, oh I don't know, a code compiler, (it aint source code so it must be a copyright protection) then you are liable. This is a large shift in the law from what it previously was and just wrong.
Just replying to a bunch of posts above. most people seem to have the idea that trade secrets are protected by law. They are not. If you found the secret recipe for Coca Cola sitting there on the street then you can publish it whereever you want. You could make T-Shirts or post flyers or indeed put it up on the internet. Please read Cyber Rights put out by the EFF before making stupid comments like this is stealing. The only thing that he could be busted for legally is IF he stole the paper he would be liable for the.005$ cost of the paper and ink. Not the data on that as it is the corporations responsibility to protect that data.
Definately. Want a real big windows speed increace? Try this. Get a system with 256 (or higher) MB of RAM. Take 56 MB of it and turn it into a RAM drive. Make this drive your swap file and watch your system slow downs go away. If you want to do this trick just a little bit of extra info. We originally tried this on a p3-733 w/ 512MB of RDRAM. Started with a 128 MB swap file. Found that anything over 50 or so wasn't needed. Gonna go home in a while and try it on a Duron 600 w/ 128 MB of PC133.
By the way. You should be able to tell from this that I like a bit of power in my machines. However my 733 is the most power that I think you could need for just about anything except possibly AutoCad. I just got my wife her Duron system from a p-200 and she is just amazed at how much more stuff she can do. Mainly because now she can multi-task instead of having to close down Word to get on the web.
Just insert a "None of the above" choice on the ballot. If none of the above gets more votes than the top canidate then all canidates that ran on that election are blocked from holding national office for a period of (say...) 10 years. This includes everybody who ran in the general election as well. Bet you it only has to happen once before they will put someone worth voting for on the ballot. In the meantime I vote for Browne. Effectively the same thing;)
I work at a phone tech farm for a major hardware supplier in the US. As a mentoring tech it is my job to take the guys straight out of training (which is good training BTW. I went through it too) and get them prepared to actually apply the knowledge of the hardware and software sets that we have to fix peoples computers. Fairly low level here. You don't need to know how to program, or any networking above setting up TCP/IP and pinging another system to prove the HW is good, just troubleshoot and fix a computer. For every person that I get that I think will do a good job I get two people (oddly enough usually MCSE certified with no real experiance) who I doubt will ever advance at all above a basic tech support roll and probally shouldn't be doing that. (entry level promotion to own level of incompitence.) I also happen to live in Austin which is only second to Silicon Valley in the number of IT workers available. Is there a shortage of people in the IT field, no. Is there a shortage of people in the IT field who know which end of a screwdriver is used to take the screw out, YES.
Most of thier client will not be able to just switch over to Erickson. My understanding of these phones is that theyoperate at a specific frequency and they are not interoperable. You try going to a client and explaining the they have to re-purchase all 2000 Motorola phones because you refused to ship over thier data. Maybe 1 or 2 clients will stay with you but the rest will just go straight to motorola.
Now if Erickson was smart they would make sure their phones worked just fine with motorolas and then yell this news reports from the ramparts. Make a motorolasucks.org website (through a 3rd party of course.) Ect. ect ect.
Sorry. Got a 1999 Susan B. in my house right now. Got it as change from a stamp vending machine from the post office. They are still in circulation. Only other place I have seen new ones tho is from the VR arcade at disneyland when I used to live in california.
However the judge threw it out when the sime molds that came out in support of the defendants showed a modicum of intelligence. Quoth the judge "The test of intelligence is enough of a distiguishing charachteristic that noone would mistake the slime mold for a lawyer."
After reading your arguments I can only come to one conclusion. YOU NEED TO MOVE TO A COUNTRY WITHOUT A CONSTITUTION!!!
Your right. If I had a tape of OJ killing nicole Simpson and released it right now it is right and good that he should not be able to be prosecuted. It's called the Bill of Rights. It says that the government cannot try a citizen twice for the same crime. Once a person is innocent he is innocent. Yes it lets people go free who probally shouldn't but it also protects many people who shouldn't be locked up and that is the idea.
"Better to have a thousand guilty men go free than one innocent man inprisoned"
Secondly due process is agian protected by the constitution. It is meant to protect companies and individuals from being ramrodded by the government through the courts. The idea is that the AG has to go through these steps so that (hopefully) at least one of the judges in the way will see the defendants side and not just throw the witches in prison.
Yes this entire system is shoddy, full of holes and slow. However it is a lot better than the alternative which is to have Janet Reno being able to execute you (and this means just about any slashdotter) for using encryption to avoid carnivore.
Because of the wonderful chanserv Q I always found galaxynet net to be fairly stable in my year and a half of running a channel for an on-line game there. Very few channel splits and never had a problem with a script kiddie. Did have a lot of the Sub7 virus running around but that was about it.
Oh and to an earlier post it was a channel devoted to a on-line gameing guild where we could get together and co-ordinate attacks. Wow, something to do with IRC that doesn't involve warez, kiddie pr0n or programming. Now that is wierd.
I worked at the Carlsbad CA library for about a year and a half. The last half I helped out with the internet computers we had set up. We had E-mail locked down and porn was as well. There were a few good reasons for this.
1. Virii protection: The computers were linked to the rest of the network. A E-mail virus coulda caused much damage.
2. The people running them were not computer gurus. They were librians. There were a few employees who probally could have protected the system better but most of them were part time college students working as clerks.
3. The person that made the policy (president of the library) certianly didn't know much about computers. He got very confused outside of microsoft word and outlook.
4. and possibly most important.. These systems are out in the open where not only can small children (usually 6 and up or so) see them but often did. They also used them. If you notice libraries will carry copies of say the Kama Sutra but will not carry Hustler. Is this censorship. I don't think so. It is an intelligent choice made by the head of the library.
Also remember that libraries are funded by public funds. While any of us would have stood up and fought with our jobs to keep the Kama Sutra or almost any other book with even a modicum of literary merit to it on the shelves most of us felt that Hard-Core porn is a worthy topic to filter out of the public library.
If there was a law passed saying libraries could not have this sort of thing I would probally agree with standing up and fighting with all that I was worth for. Or if a library banned works of serios literary merit (even something like the Mummy from Ann Rice which has little literary merit) agian it would be something to rant and rave about. But filtering hard-core porn in the presence of minors. Come on.
Also if it seriously bothers you don't post it here on slashdot. you are wasting your breathe. Get a petition signed from members of your community and present it to the head clerk. State your arguments. The floor clerks kept a few books on the shelves agianst the will of the city mayor with this tactic.
