Correcting a mistake the teacher made ? Unacceptable for some teachers, since teachers are never wrong and students are always wrong. (Experienced this one myself, basically, the teacher threw a tantrum when the _whole friggin' class_ pointed out to him politely that what he just said was wrong, since we all knew the right answer from a class we've just had earlier the very same day.

Student showing mild signs of boredom (such as looking out the window, or reading ahead in the textbook) since he could hold the class himself ? Unacceptable ?

My son goes through this all the time. Some teachers are such controlling jerks. They have their nice little personal dictatorship and damn anyone who say different. Granted, I know not all teachers are like this, having met and worked with some great teachers, but I have also run into lots of teachers who are just evil, even if they don't realize it.

Some very damning photos and videos that were to be released by the Gov were stopped from doing so by the Pentagon saying that doing so would violate the Geneva Convention by further embarrassing the victims of the criminal acts. Yes criminal... rape and murder still count as criminal acts.

It is also a fact that Bush knew his most important charge against Iraq, the "yellow cake" line was false. That is why, someone in his administration outed Plame. And it is also a fact that millions of dollars have been "misplaced" in Iraq. If Haliburton got them, who knows, but there have been many contractors in Iraq who have been caught over charging.

See, you are correct, it never pays to listen to one news source. I listen to many, read many on the web, and not just from one ideological viewpoint, nor from one country.

    Christian
    adj.

    1. Professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
    2. Relating to or derived from Jesus or Jesus's teachings.
    3. Manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus; Christlike.

Western style governments have always used taxation as taking from one person and giving to others. But property, you know, land, has had special protection in English, and hence, American law. Sure, if you want to generalize and say land and money is all property in some form, then you could have a point. But the fact of the matter is, legally, (and that is what we are discussing), property and cash are different.

Actually, I think it's probably "the government" acting in its interests too- preventing any erosion of eminent domain. What's next, people arguing how much of the "public interest" that new bypass is? Can't have that!

This case is not about a new bypass. This case is about a taking land from one person and giving it to another person or corp.

Here is a quote from one of the dissenting views.

Justice O'Connor, with whom The Chief Justice, Justice Scalia, and Justice Thomas join, dissenting.

Over two centuries ago, just after the Bill of Rights was ratified, Justice Chase wrote:

"An act of the Legislature (for I cannot call it a law) contrary to the great first principles of the social compact, cannot be considered a rightful exercise of legislative authority ... . A few instances will suffice to explain what I mean... . [A] law that takes property from A. and gives it to B: It is against all reason and justice, for a people to entrust a Legislature with such powers; and, therefore, it cannot be presumed that they have done it." Calder v. Bull, 3 Dall. 386, 388 (1798) (emphasis deleted).

Today the Court abandons this long-held, basic limitation on government power. Under the banner of economic development, all private property is now vulnerable to being taken and transferred to another private owner, so long as it might be upgraded--i.e., given to an owner who will use it in a way that the legislature deems more beneficial to the public--in the process. To reason, as the Court does, that the incidental public benefits resulting from the subsequent ordinary use of private property render economic development takings "for public use" is to wash out any distinction between private and public use of property--and thereby effectively to delete the words "for public use" from the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Accordingly I respectfully dissent.

According to the report I heard on NPR, this bill does not allow a company to release edits of movies, but rather allows the use of filters to skip violence/sex/drug scenes. I don't have a problem with that.

It is ironic that many folks here at /. feel the need to protect the integrity of a movie, when so many also think they can trade movies or songs at will. Also, how does filtering of movie content compare to song sampling?

    Excerpt from the bill...

Title II: Exemption from Infringement for Skipping Audio and Video Content In Motion Pictures - Family Movie Act of 2005 - (Sec. 202) Creates an exemption from copyright infringement for:

    (1) the making imperceptible, by or at the direction of a private household, of limited portions of audio or video content of a motion picture during a performance in or transmitted to that household for private home viewing from an authorized copy of the motion picture; or

    (2) the creation or provision of technology that enables such editing, is designed and marketed for such use, creates no fixed copy of the altered version, and makes no changes, deletions or additions to commercial advertisements or promotional announcements that would otherwise be performed or displayed.

I agree with all except for euthanasia. I think if a person is able to make a decision that their life is not worth living, why should we stop them. Should we force people to not smoke, not drink, not eat red meat? Make them exercise? We let people kill themselves a little at a time everyday. How is it so different to let them do it all at once. My wife died from cancer in a most horrible way. I would not wish that upon anyone. If I knew I was going down that path, I would pick my own time so I could say goodbye and go with some sense of dignity. What purpose does the extra pain serve? Would God reject me because of this? Would this pain make me accepted into Heaven?

Now as for that woman in Florida... that is a truely horrible situation. I don't think I would want my son to continue in that state, so I question the parents motives and understanding of the situation. But I also would not want to make the decision for the parties involved.
