Einstein did NOT have Downs syndrome. He would NOT have been aborted under these circumstances. And I don't recall ever hearing of any accusations that he was retarded.
Do you even know what it means to be retarded? Or has the term's over-use to mean "stupid" completely blinded you to what REAL retards are like?
I'm ambivalent about whether the Slashdot community donating blood is a good thing.
On the one hand, the risk of HIV is practically nil. There's no one cool enough to do drugs, and the biggest sexual risk anyone here faces is spunking on their keyboard.
On the other hand, the cholesterol level is probably so high, any receipient of this blood would have to worry about a heart attack.
Creatures has very little violence, although some people might be tempted to beat their creatures to death, and in Creatures 3, it is VERY easy to kill Creatures of all sorts in creative ways (set the norn detector to activate the sludge cannon, for example). But otherwise, it is interesting, and a fairly intellectually challenging game.
Virtually any puzzle game would fit the bill.
Racing games tend not to be violent, although you could take up ramming other cars, as well. Many of these allow customization of cars. The ever-popular Gran Turismo series being one of the best examples. (Use Bleem! if you can't use playstations.)
The dotcoms would have eventually started dying anyhow. It doesn't matter HOW good or professionally grown your tulips are, if there are too many tulip growers, some will go out of business.
The biggest problem I see with people not being able to figure out how to use computers to run software is that they don't understand the hardware (AT ALL...I don't pretend to know anything about electronics besides how to solder, and not very well at that, but the people who came into the labs where I worked...how many times did I have to press the reset button on the computer when they were cycling power on the monitor...), and they don't understand the common features of most software.
Putting identical hardware and software in front of someone when you're trying to teach them to use computers is the worst thing you can do. Because they will have to be retrained the moment they encounter something different.
I suppose you could do that, if you're a trainer and are looking for job security, though.
Me, if I wanted to teach a really useful class, I would make it a year long (we're talking high school here, right?), have them each build their own machines (which would be taken apart in the middle of the course, and people would swap parts and do it again, this time installing a different OS...and yes, windows would be included...probably second, that way they could get used to *nix or whatever before going back to windows) and include some simple programming (so long as it goes so far as reading and writing from files...the difference between a data file and an executable is one thing most users don't understand).
Actually, I think running the first month of the class using nothing but DOS would be the best training. The first assignment would be to get Wolf 3D or Duke Nukem to run, with sound. (IMO, DOOM was easier to get working properly than either of those)
Compaq eats DEC, HP eats Compaq...who's going to devour HP? (and for that matter, who did DEC devour before that?)
Things will look great for HP for a while...all of a sudden they've got thousands of new customers!

Anyhow, the only really visually impressive game I've seen from Sega, and I mean in EVERY way, not just stylistically (in which case, Sonic Team and Team Andromeda consistantly kicked ass) has been Virtua Fighter 4 (which, visually, compares favorably to Tekken 4...mainly because Tekken 4 isn't terribly impressive, I guess.)
Tell that to the Realmedia people, who have been delivering us high-quality streaming video over modems with little buffering time and the easiest-to-use, least obnoxious player in the industry for YEARS now!
90 percent of the traffic is from the top 30 results of a search?
I don't see how that puts someone in a position such that they "can't compete." When I use a search engine, it's generally to find information, which is usually free, and usually on individual's web sites. When I want to buy something, I use indexes or newsgroups to find the site I use.
Anyhow, I wonder what percentage those 4 companies would have if you EXCLUDED all AOL and WebTV users (especially the AOL users)...the people who are probably least likely to ever venture out of the playpen that has been set up for them.
That assumption is tossed out the window completely with sex offender registration (which doesn't even take into account different offenses, or the fact that it's a really easy thing to be falsely convicted of). And not allowing convicted felons to vote. And denying employment based on criminal records.
Nice to see that they're not going to be spending too much on this stuff. It'd be really easy to spend money on capabilities which would never be used.
I wonder though, if teachers will know what to do with this, if they will have net access easily available on these bastards (ethernet or some type of wireless lan in school, free dial-up from outside), and if these machines are going to be some kind of "information appliance"...perhaps hackable by you slashdot types but NOT by a 7th grader, or whether the intrepid could really do anything with them.

This is a game which is relying heavily upon it's visuals, and at times I thought (watching the video) I was looking at a Saturn game. (Well, the backgrounds are sometimes Saturn-esque. The characters all have shading inferior to well...any PS2 game I've seen, but are nicely modelled...overall seeing Shenmue 2 next to Devil May Cry in a store, I was reminded of Saturn Vs. Playstation...where it was clear that, disregarding the sheer artistry of Nights or Panzer Dragoon, which Shenmue possesses absolutely none of, the Playstation simply blew the Saturn away when it came to RENDERING 3D.)
Sega is very good at making shitty-looking games that play better-than-average. Take a look at the what they fill Japanese arcades with.

Meta-cartoon crap. An industry feeding off it's own waste for too long, recycling the same ideas endlessly.
Watch the movie. It is painfully clear you have not.
Oh, and BTW, how do you intend to have depth perception on a 2D display? The only way you can, by perceived distance based on size. That works the same way with photorealism and with cartoons.
Regardless, the shading works, it may not be revolutionary, but it is a step above what came before (Jet Grind Radio being the most obvious example, but there are others).
My problem with it is I think the design for link just looks stupid. Um Jammer Linky.
Remember "Mask week" on Fox? When all the shitcoms had an effect like the movie "The Mask" (remember that?) the week they showed it? Or are you trying to forget them?
I hope you don't mean "bug-eyed" like every shitty cartoon parody (eg: Roger Rabbit...the character sucked no matter how good the movie was) does.
Unless it really is literally a random person off the street, someone who can leave, never to be found again, and easily escape all retribution...why would anyone be stupid enough to lie about having AIDS, and get someone infected?
Seriously, if I knew my life was going to be seriously impacted, probably severely shortened, and possibly not worth living anymore, I would make sure that that person died a more horrible death than AIDS could ever provide.
I hate seeing documents in pdf format. Especially ones that could just as easily be done in HTML or even plain text. (And that is MOST PDF documents, BTW)
They are slow to load, due to the reader starting up. They leave less screen real estate open, if it's the plugin. And they are a pain in the ass to navigate, compared to HTML.
But they're "printable." Oooooooh. (So are text files. So is HTML if it isn't crap) That's the only plus, that there is (usually) no hassle to printing them.
