I usually build from CVS sources every few days or so, and we hard core weenies have been at 1.6b for well over a month. How is it decided that a formal beta is released should be released to the larger public? Oh, and could we get back rot13 decoding in mail and news, please? I read ASR occasionally via moz, and it would be a godsend:)
My only need for scsi is for my venerable old hp scanjet 4 and a cd burner, so this ancient future domain isa card works just dandy. Unfortunately, the driver segfaults under 2.6.0-x. It worked a treat with 2.4. Anyone else had this issue? Should I make a formal bug report? Is it a hassle to do so?
Yeah, yeah, it's a rant and all, but it's probably the most insightful and on-target post in the whole thread. Especially the bit about Big Bidness farming out the dirtiest parts of their operations via Koyoto to the desperate and poor parts of the world to bolster their bottom line.
Thanks for supporting me on my assessment of our situation. I'm still somewhat bewildered at the notion that a twisted pair could be induced with enough current so as to induce sufficient voltage to pop the protections inherent to an ethernet cable. Variations in the quality of the twist could explain it, but MAN, would that initial burst of pure magnetic potential have to be HUGE! Apparently it was, though. The affected TV is chroma-influenced all across its' expanse.
A few months ago, during a rather spectacular thunderstorm, we a lightning strike _very_ close to our house. Most of our NIC cards' and our router's ports got toasted, while leaving the internal circuitry of our computers utterly untouched.. they ran flawlessly both before, through, and after the incident. No reboots, no power glitches.. nada. The cards passed diags fine; the router would boot up ok, too.. except.. None of the lights indicating CAT5 connectivity lit up. Some component substitutions eventually revealed that all of the rj45 interfaces had been smoked. A final, glaring clue that the lightning bolt's EMP was indeed the culprit was the fact that a 30" tv that had been on in the room at the time now exhibits _severe_ orange and green casts all the way out to the corners of the crt at right angles to each other. The mask is now MAG-MO-TIZED in a major way. I'm gonna need a really muscular degausser.:)

So... When did FICA, medicare, flat rate state and local and all those other pesky, regressive 'payroll' taxes stop being f*cking INCOME TAXES, asshole? How about SALES TAXES? Or Real estate taxes? Where I live, rental property (where the poor are likely to be stuck living) is taxed at COMMERCIAL RATES.. IE 2x what residential pays. Who pays that? Uhuh. Didn't think about that, eh, putz? And don't EVEN MENTION the earned income tax credit, bitch. It don't cover shit in terms of the real world tax load the poor have to cough up.

Wonder how much it actually cost in paperwork to pay the scientists. As recently as 5 yrs ago, the cost for the state of Illinois, where I live, to cut a check, ANY check, was $52. That's right, folks. Your $1.72 state income tax refund check cost an additional FIFTY TWO F**KING DOLLARS to issue! This was from the very mouth of a state treasury official who was attempting to reform the gawd awful mess.
*snicker!* Only a +1? I thought that was clever! Personally, I'd go for a fractal Phish/Dead tedious jam set generator embedded somehow in the download. Since tedious jams' primary life purpose are the facilitation of Woodstock-style druggie babe gyrations, actual musical themes and narrative styles are largely superfluous.
I've always had a soft spot for "On the Corner", one of Miles' unappreciated gems. But then, I've always felt that "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" was one of Zappa's best, too. Guess I have strange tastes:)
Alps! Yum! I've got a 132 column alps p2000g that I picked up for $15 (GREAT price!) a few years ago. Man, what a tank this thing is! A 9 pin with a FAN! Apparently thousands of these guys are still in service all over the us in banks and such, so you know they're durable. Add in the epson compatibility print and ribbon wise, and you've got a killer draft printer any source perusing geek has just gotta love.
Now that Bush and his henchmen have essentially told the rest of the world to f*ck off with regard to military and diplomatice endeavors, and chosen to invade Iraq unilaterally, perhaps the larger planetary community can return the favor in a manner that will make their displeasure truly felt? IE: by telling US big bidness and the USPTO to go bite the big one!
BRAVO! Beautiful post. I'm normally a right winger, and despite the (few) misspellings, I'm totally in accordance with this d00d. Bush and his crew (I mean EVERYBODY, even Colin.. look at the crap his son is on about) must GO! I will *not* live in a police state. Period. The second amendment affords us the measures needed to reconcile conflicts such as this. It's there for a reason. That reason is looming. Now. Vote first. Make noise. Believe in democracy, for what it's worth. There may, however, come a time, when we, the concerned, must take this thing up into our own hands. The masses will not support us, as they are complacent. We can shut the Net down. Easily. We can take up the Gun! The masses will flee before us, leaving easy targets.. the PHB's, politicians, etc. OOOh.. I'm babbling! Not Good(tm). This is starting to sound nutty, but there are nuggets of sincerity in there.
Let's face it.. ground mail and phone contact is far more efficient for malevolent forces to utilise than the net is. If I were a terrorist lunatic, the LAST medium of communication I would be utilising right now would be the internet. I'd revert to the old standbys.. passing notes in trash cans, microfiche, all that good shit that actually WORKED for both our boyz and the soviets during the cold war. This is just a power grab ala 1984 on the part of our socalled 'caretakers'. As geeks, we have the power to collectively say 'FUCK YOU!' and kill this puppy in its' cradle. Anyone of an IT or scientific pedigree who willingly works towards the implementation of this nightmare of a future world is a flagrant traitor to this nation and its' citizens. The potential consequences for such individuals are left as an exercise for the reader.
No. Seriously! Dishwasher detergent is magnificent at dislodging creosote like contaminants such as one would experience in a fire. I used to work at a small electronics manufacturer that would, as a matter of routine, run all of their nice shiny newly soldered boards through a big ol' Kitchenaid to get the excess flux off. Worked great.
When I turned to the editorial page of the Chicago Tribune this morning, I was greeted by this column by Kathleen Parker of the Orlando Sentinel. Always a voice of measured rationality, she sums up the whole thing quite tidily.
The only reason that I'm replying to this is because it's a smart and coherent post that actually addresses the subject. I also agree, heartily. Our scoring/moderation system needs a severe revamp.. it's become increasingly difficult to wade through the crap to get to what's worthy. Even +2 isn't cutting it anymore.
Alas, these comments make me sad. Is there no place for beauty or art that serves no purpose other than being pleasing to the eye.
There certainly is, and I admire it when it appears. What I was attempting to say, (badly, apparently) is that most case mods are the computer equivalent of tarting up one's trailer home... A largely tastless exercise in naive kitsch (sp?). Perhaps these boxen might be traded in the future on some now unimaginable ebay like market, but for my present purposes, they're largely the result of certain rather pathetic geeks seeking coolness points from one another. That's clique behavior, and I'll have none of it. If a particular case mod might actually assist me in my evil efforts to dominate all space and time, then, I MIGHT consider emulating it. Until then.. I have work to do!
