Tom Clancy often has some pretty detailed information in his books about bombs, nuclear weapons, and weapons. He has to do quite a bit of research to learn the things that he writes about. Should he go to jail for researching how bombs are made, if it is a plot in his book? Conspiracy to Commit a Felony should not be provable without action. I don't mean the action of researching, I mean, collecting materials, planning out and studying a target, things along that line. If all you are doing is expanding your education, and perhaps your mind, then what have you done wrong? Perhaps your knowledge and research would be later used to save peoples lives or to even defend your country?
Edit: I have a confusing sentence in there. When I say, "Unions can force all new hires to become union members (which amounts to the same thing)," I mean it amounts to the same thing Trepidity was saying (closed shop), not the same as what the companies are doing right now.
Unions cannot force employees to become members. They can, however, force employees to pay dues. The reason behind this is that they do not want employees to have an economic incentive to avoid the union. In some states, such as California, they cannot force you to pay the money directly to the union; you may contribute the money to a charity of your choice instead.
I get punished when I take vacation, but not directly by my company. I get punished because I know that when I leave the office, nothing will get done. If I take two weeks off, I have to come back and take care of my own responsibilities, plus all of the problems that built up for two weeks while I was gone. It makes me not want to come back to work after vacations. It's not that I work with a bunch of idiots, per se. The problem is that my company has way more work than we can handle. We're trying to hire like crazy, but the new people aren't up to speed and the experience people are depended on way too much while the new people are spooled up.
I wasn't trying to say that everyone who travels internationally has trouble with ICE. The person never specified if the travel was foreign, or domestic, however. That's a key difference, because no one has their data searched on domestic travel. I don't agree with searching the data on Foreign travel, either. But I'm not all wrapped up in tin foil either. Most people will never be bothered by customs, but I've never seen customs swab for explosive materials either. They leave that to the security people.
I've travelled with multiple terabytes of "these are obviously hard drives" storage and never had a problem with search or confiscation.
Was this international travel? Because it's international travel that is associated with confiscation of computers, hard drives, and other electronics. And if you don't unencrypt it, don't expect to get it back if they try to look at it.
When I was hired on, it was strictly for L3 related tasks such as advanced server administration, Exchange design and implementation, etc.
I like a challenge, and since all of my goals outlined since my hire date have been met and exceeded, I have a lot of down time.
I'm more concerned with his statements (above). Is he getting paid for this "downtime". Personally, I don't want to work with people who are only concerned with "their job" specifically. I've been a Unix system programmer/admin for 25+ years at a variety of places. I've always done whatever was needed and helped whoever I could. I may have a specific job title, but my real job is helping the my team, co-workers and company be successful.
Not to mention all of this downtime may be noticed by the boss. The boss may decide that he wrote that software during said downtime, and think that he is trying to cheat them out of the time and money. Plus, if you have all that downtime, you really should have done the work on the clock in order to be productive and actually earn your pay.
Didn't you get the memo? You can have Siri on android. They figured out the API Apple is using on Siri. You do realize that Siri is done over the internet, right? And that there is no hardware on the iPhone 4S that makes Siri tick? Siri is just a bullet point to suggest that the iPhone 4S is really worth having over the iPhone 4. Kind of like the 3GS when Apple claimed that you could now record videos on the device, even though everyone with Cydia installed on their 3G had been recording videos for a while...
Say, that I'm allergic to morphine (because I am), are oxycodone, and hydrocodone different enough that I wouldn't be allergic to them? Or rather, what I mean is, is there a high or low correlation between allergy to morphine and those two opiates?
I'm not sure. My understanding is that they all metabolize into the same chemical inside of the body. There could be some difference between them, I suppose. Oxycodone and hydrocodone are just synthetic versions of the same basic chemical, I believe. Typically when people have reactions to opiates they become very sick and cannot keep anything down. Is that the same with you? I feel sorry if that is the case, as narcotic pain meds can be very important if you need surgery, or have a bad accident.
, I had my Oxycotin prescription renewed without question, or hassle for about 2 months (at one point, they later switched me to Vicodin, same stuff, just a higher Tylenol to narcotic ratio).
You are thinking of oxycodone, which is a different formulation of hydrocodone. They have about the same strength, but oxycodone is generally more effective at treating pain. Typically if you've become resistant to hydrocodone, you can switch to oxycodone and have better effectiveness for a short period. They metabolize into the same chemicals. Oxycontin is an extended release version of oxycodone, that typically lasts for 24 hours. Its also a much higher dosage than what you find in percocet (5-10mg oxycodone and 325mg tylenol). You can also get vicodin with 5-10mg of hydrocodone and 325-500mg of tylenol.
Although, I suppose in the surgical instances, no DEA agent is ever going to question why you're giving a patient narcotics after surgery... and then in the first case, I was peeing blood, so... probably no reason to expect to be hassled about that as well. Then of course, none of these three were for chronic pain, but rather for acute pain, that was expected to subside relatively quickly.
Come to think of it, after I had my big motorcycle crash, I think they gave me a short-term supply of narcotics as well, no questions asked. But then again, also not for chronic pain.
Meh, I don't know. I suppose what I'm saying is that I've never had trouble getting any narcotics. In fact, beyond the signing for it, I don't think I've ever had any more hassle getting narcotics than getting any other prescription drug. But then as noted, all of it was short-term, and none of it chronic. Likewise, all of them were well justified pain prescriptions.
It's only an issue when they prescribe a lot of narcotics, or a lot of narcotics to the same individual. If you are a PCP, then you typically would prescribe a variety of medicines, and narcotics should be a small percentage of all the medicine prescribed.
Reading comprehension FAIL. "Quite frequently" != "in every instance".
I'd be willing to bet that the exact same scenario played out more than just a handful of times. If he doesn't have numbers to back this up then I would say that it probably happens less often than he thinks.
Anyway, you protest before the expansion not afterwards.
That's a nice theory, really. The problem is that the airport is within the city limits of San Jose, but their planes conveniently take off over the city of Santa Clara. Guess who deals with the noise pollution? Why the city of Santa Clara, of course. And they were unable to stop the expansion of the airport. It took over 10 years of lawsuits for the airport and the city of San Jose to be forced to give any consideration to the people in the actual flight path of the airport.
That's not entirely true. My parents own a house near SJC. At the time that they bought the home, SJC was not SJC. It was a very small airport that only saw traffic from small single engine turbo props that were 4-6 seaters. Now they are flying 747s out of there. I'd say that is a huge difference in noise.
Hell, you can't even donate blood without getting called ALL the time. It drives me nuts. I donate blood when I can. Don't call me every 8 weeks just because I am O- and CMV negative. I'm not a freaking blood factory, I have my own life to live.
You, kind sir, need to watch "I Am Legend" again. We do NOT want that sort of incident happening again. I've been through that kind of terror. A lot of beautiful women that MAY have slept with a computer geek died. We were left with less women, all terrified by computer geeks because they are just as scared of the sun as the zombie guys in the movie.
You want us to depend on other countries for our food supply? You can subsidize farming without having the corn go to animals. Just make it illegal to create animal feed out of corn. But don't stop growing crops just because your friendly 3rd world (and potentially unstable) country can do it for you on the cheap! Some things are worth paying for.
My boss is pretty stupid too. The CXX's love him so he has certain leeway that should not be granted. For instance, he is able to run his own servers for SVN, Bugzilla, etc. Since he runs his own servers, and does not give IT access, there is no backup. I asked him what he would do in the event of a failure. His response was that everyone's computer would be a backup. That all of our code would be checked back into SVN from peoples hard drives. What he fails to realize (even after I brought it to his attention), was the fact that not every single branch, tag, or even repo is checked out. We would lose a TON of work if the server failed. If the building burned down, we'd lose almost everything.
You're confusing me with a person who loves to hear the sound of their voice. I'd much rather listen to someone than to talk to them. But I do believe that it is important to at least be pleasant and friendly to your coworkers, and not just sit there in your own little world for a whole week of a business trip. Especially since this particular guy won't go to dinner by himself, but won't talk to you at dinner either. Why does he need someone to go with him then?
This particular person is like this with everyone. You can't even get him to talk about the stuff he is working on, even if its important to his career. I never said that I wanted to ramble on about inane things. But if you're going to spend a week with someone on a trip, you need to say more than just hello and good night. It's just common courtesy, and I'd suspect that it's new to you since you think that being pleasant to your coworkers is inane.
Everyone has been on that business trip with the guy who just won't talk... you spend hours and hours with them at the airport, at meals, in the car driving to and from your destination, and they don't say a word! It's miserable. You'd rather be there by yourself than be with the guy who can't say anything more than "hello" and "good night."
MSWord was never designed for complicated document layout. No wonder you were having problems with it.
The lack of formatting tag access is a big clue...
A big clue that you are very unfamiliar with how to use Office, which has provided access to the formatting tags since at least Office 97.... But I agree that you can get into some very funky formatting situations
What version of Office is this? Because i am working on a pretty complex document right now with no problems. I've had no problem with performance in Office 2010 for Windows on my work machine, or Office 2011 for Mac on my personal machine. I have a brand new Macbook Pro (mid 2011). No issues with performance at all, except when I open this one particular document that is over 1000 pages and is about 100MB in size.
Compared to the free alternatives, its as good as it gets. Open Office, LibreOffice, and Google Docs do not support the formatting needed.

In addition to which, our wonderful Missouri law adds the extra kicker of "No other judge may remove, nor revoke the contempt order of another".
Dear lord... I hope the judge doesn't die while you're being held for contempt...

I have a big hand and actually prefer a larger phone. My 4" screen is great.
What do you mean? With odds of 1 in 250 million for winning powerball, I just have to buy 250 million tickets to win that 100 million jackpot!
