  1. Still with Schopenhauer on If We Have Free Will, Then So Do Electrons · · Score: 1

I'm still with Schopenhauer, that free will is a myth as all actions are empirically influenced in one way or another, and therefore no such action is truly "free". So not to play semantics, but if you subscribe to this theory as well, than is it something other than "free will" that's guiding these sub-atomic particles if this theorem plays out, and if so, what?

"Prize Essay on the Freedom of Will" for further reference.

SVG/Canvas? You must be joking? There are many reasons why Photoshop and Flash have become the standards for professional design work and its not for the same reasons that M$ is for the desktop. There is SO much more that Flash can do (especially when you factor in something like Flex) than SVG and Canvas isn't even worth talking about when you want to get real work done.

Free Will is a myth, according to Arthur Schopenhauer at least. Check out his "Prize Essay on the Freedom of Will." His case made for it is a very good one (thus "The Prize").

  5. FLASH VIDEO on Video Formats for non-Windows Users? · · Score: 1

Sorenson makes an awesome product called 'Squeeze' that compresses video files (Quicktime/AVI/etc.) into flash Video (MUCH better than you will on your own). I recently compressed a 20mb Quicktime trailer to a 8mb one with minimal to no loss of quality. The best thing about Flash Video is that Flash has a higher penetration rate than any other plug-in and does away with cross-platform compatability issues.

  6. Cars? on Could Nuclear Power Wean the U.S. From Oil? · · Score: 1

I think the greater burden on our country for foreign oil dependence is with our gas consumption, i.e. cars. Nuclear power wouldn't eliminate this in the way that fuel cells would. The most that Nuclear energy would do would be the elimination of coal burning plants, which would yes be great for our air (real clean skies), but then there's the question of nuclear waste disposal.

Have yet to see it work in person, but as a Mac user it's enough to make me consider buying one as I'm looking for a new phone anyway.

  14. Fear of the Moon on Wave/Sea Power - What Are the Dangers? · · Score: 1

    This fear is nonsense.

The tides do add a tiny bit of "friction" to the earth-moon interaction. It does take work to move a fair chunk of the ocean back and forth since water is a little viscous - that is, it has friction to forces trying to move it. Mostly it just sloshes back and forth comfortably.

Other forces such as the other planets, tides on the Sun, etc. are more important.

However tidal power generation would affect at best one-billionth [trillionth?] of the ocean so any impact it has would be undetectable and unimportant.

Remember though that when the moon is close to earth it has to go very fast to stay up. As it goes further away it does not have to move so fast. Thus lost energy makes it go further away. The energy losses are to the earth-moon system as a whole not just to the moon's kinetic energy.

  15. Does age really matter? on Does Age Really Matter? · · Score: 1

I've had that experience in the past too although it is starting taper off a bit now that I'm at the ripe old age of 24. I've held a senior position for the past 2 years and yes it is hard to get some people to listen to you sometimes even when you have authority over them; I still encounter it now. I think that it becomes most apparent when someone older is arguing with you about something they know nothing about and you have experience with. It is frustrating but I think as the industry grows and younger people take higher positions that it will slowly decline as more people will be able to relate to what they knew at that age and I think that that's the largest problem is that there aren't as many people who in their teens were writing programs as opposed to doing whatever else now as there will be in the near future.

Yeah but guess what? The people building and innovating the internet hardware, software, languages etc. aren't the 800+ million speaking Mandarin, the majority is coming out of the US and Europe where english is quite prevalent. I'm not some radical pro-english individual, but these comments lack any point what so ever without taking other factors into consideration. It's the same as saying "Yeah there are more hockey fans in Canada" but why do you think that there are so many more NHL teams in the US? The value of the American dollar holds a hell of a lot more weight than any number of people speaking a language and that is the loudest voice.
