  1. Fluctuations? on Leap Second To Be Added Dec 31, 2008 · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm sorry? Fluctuations in the rotation of the earth? You mean the earth is accelerating and breaking? It has nothing to do with the fact that a rotation around the sun is not exactly 365.25 rotations around our own axis? hmm...

They would need to give it an additional speed (relative to the space station, in the right direction) of about 3 km/s for it to leave earth orbit. They don't have the means for that.
What they did is basically just 'release' it, and and let the thin atmosphere of earth slow it down so it eventually falls down. (ISS is kept from slowing down using rocket power once in a while).

Well put and entirely true of course. That makes me wonder about their claim that ultracapacitors are 'lighter' than batteries. As far as I know, the mass related energy density (J/kg) of capacitors is still lower than batteries, i.e. they are heavier!

A matter of perspective. I work in defence research, and we use the term hard-kill if the target is destroyed, and soft-kill if the target is rendered ineffective.

If the person is the target, your statement is correct. If the computer is the target, killing the operator would only be a temporary soft-kill.

I'm happy using linux, and I giggle when windows-users get infected, but I never barrage them with Linux advertisement. They usually get infected because they are browsing the web or viewing emails in outlook express with admin rights

  13. Elephant? on ODF Editor Says ODF Loses If OOXML Does · · Score: 1
I think what he means is that development of ODF will speed up because of development on OOXML, because they can use the specifications to extend ODF.

What I don't understand is why he doesn't see the elephant in the room: OOXML would be a giant competitor as an ISO standard! How does he think OOXML and ODF are going to supported in MS Office? Equally?

Without OOXML as an ISO standard, ODF would be the preferred choice for exchangeable documents. With OOXML as an ISO standard, OOXML would be (for the average company/user).
