Sorry, but this honestly has to be one of the most disgusting posts I have ever read.
There were plenty of companies back in the old days that did not support Linux. And yet that is understandable because in all honesty, it didn't make much sense financially to support linux (ask Id software about this, they've been behind linux forever.) Now however, times have changed. For the first time ever, supporting linux may not be a burden, but something that is actually 'pretty cool' (how good linux is to a company financially is still beyond us.)
As linux users, it is not in our place to slap the wrists of those that did not support us in the past. But too rather sit here and help them. I for sure welcome Macromedia into the OSS arena. While I too have yet to see the outcome, I'm sure any thing the contribute will be greatly . appreciated.
(And when you think about it, you come to the realization that Macromedia is a far better company than Adobe. And if you thought about it some more, you'd realize Adobe is even worse than Microsoft is.)
For spring break my friends and I decided to head over to boston (lovely lovely city). When we saw the T (and all 4 colors), we were a little shocked. Coming from New York City with one of the world's largest subway systems, we do know quite a bit about train transportation in major metro areas. But the T was like nothing we expected.
wasn't the entire point of linux to have a bunch of open source drivers?? (mind you, the thing we keep calling linux is actually only the kernel itself.)
Lets see now, on one hand we have a bunch of binary only drivers that are unstable as crap supporting the next-generation GPU. And on the other hand we have community created open source drivers that are pretty damn stable supporting the 2nd generation chipset??

PS: ask any linux laptop user who has an nvidia video card, on how badly nvidia has fucked them over
They chose ATI because it has better 2d performance
What most people forget is that Nvidia doesn't make any cards themselves, but rather others do. And those 'others' have shown that they pretty much such at 2d.

The GNU is _NOT_ viral because no one ever forced you to read the source code to begin with. It was your choice to read another author's work, therefore you must respect his or her wishes.
The only people I know who prefer vinyl are people who DJ in their spare time....
Not spare time, but those who do it professionally.
Artists like
Paul Oakenfold use only vinyl. And this guy is pretty popular. I think it is safe to say that generally people who DJ in their spare time are the ones who DON'T use vinyl. For them CD's are far easier to get their hands on, and few would have that much of a dedication to use an older format.
I think Microsoft thinks a little different than you do. Microsoft too believes that searching is a far better system than some silly names, however for FAR different reasons. Microsoft wants people to be able to search for things because Microsoft has the ability to control those results. As opposed to a naming system in which, Microsoft has NO control over.
It is reason number 2 on the guys page: http://www.teare.com/
You have to admit, it makes perfect sense for MSFT.
Slashdot needs to create some sort of local-copy system to use when the main site is slashdotted
After all, what good does it do the slashdot community when we can no longer read the article??
Additionally, the local-copy should be like Google's cashe system, this way all ad images would still point to whatever ad servers the pages originally had. (this would be to cover a reason why slashdot has yet to institute such a system)
I for one believe the emotion engine and related are a joke
I think that sony spent too much time hyping and marketing the chipset as opposed to actually spending time designing the chipset
I say this for two reasons:
First, one should look at Sony's competing rival Nintendo: I have no idea if the gamecube is better than the PS2 tech wise, however what I can say is nintendo seems to be doing fine on the gamecube's technology without having to deal with the lunacies of the PS2's chipset. Enouogh said.
Secondly, aren't we trying to make chips smaller to begin with?
Had sony thought this chip out a bit more carefully, I wholefully believe that sony wouldn't be in the current situation as they are in right now.
Don't get me wrong, sony is a very smart company and they always know what they are doing, however the actions behind the PS2's chipsets make less sense to anyone. Only now does it seem like sony is trying to fix up the problems inherent with such a large chipset as the EE turned out to be.
openbsd sure is stable, there is no doubt in the world that Theo de Raadt would produce anything else
however OpenBSD suffers quiet a bit from lack of cpu optimization. OpenBSD doesn't even currently support the MMX extensions for it x86 platform. Additionally, OpenBSD has a history of having a slower performing file system.
While OpenBSD is the world's most secure OS, and it sure is pretty damn stable, it would fail on the enterprise level. There is simply no way, Company XYZ would be able to roll out their production database system (or whatever requires loads of CPU and usage) on OpenBSD.
However, OpenBSD would kick the crap out of just about everything else for firewall usage. For those of you who haven't looked into it, check out OpenBSD's *AMAZING* ability to be an invisible bridge (not only can it invisibly bridge, but it can filter the bridge as well, which is something other OS'es have yet to be able to do).

blocking off entire domains is useless for a magnitude of reasons
first it prevents legit email from going to you. not everyone in the world can afford a real ISP or whatnot, and for them a service like hotmail/yahoo/etc is their only option.
second you should really read headers on that bloody spam you get from someone@hotmail.com There is a VERY high chance the headers will NOT say "received from host-xyz.hotmail.com". Therefore YOU know for a fact htat you aren't getting real mail from those servers.
what we need is a change in the SMTP protocol. Instead of simply denying every IP block out there. We need to enforce technologies like smtp-auth. Sure the spammers will easily by pass this one, however it would help to cut down on the level of spam you get.
additionally we need to create some sort of a ranking system. so ISPS with spam problems (or they just don't care) can get a "higher rank". therefore when all the ISPs advertise their services to the rest of the world, they will strive for a low rank to better impress their customers
this would be a time in which we sit down with the lovely people on congress, and discuss all the things of life made illegal thanks to the DMCA
only then will they understand
the only reason they don't understand is because they DON'T have to deal with technology that could be effected by the DMCA. (well they get paid big $$ by corporate america too, let us not forget that as well.)
maybe... just maybe... after they've learned that the buttons on their shirts are illegal, will they change their minds about the DMCA
one last thing, doesn't the FBI use technology that could be considered illegal by the DMCA??
so does that mean they'll have to stop using it or something??
I know I'm going to get modded down of this, but why do linux users like Nvidia products, if there is only closed binary support for them??
That defeats the entire purpose of using an open source and free Operating system. If I wanted to use CSS drivers, I would have stuck to Windows and had real support from Nvidia.
Doesn't the MPEG-LA alliance expect a user to pay .25 cents per hour of play back?
The more I think about it, the more I wish MPEG4 would just die and something new and better would spawn from somewhere.

all of us do nothing but rave about google day and night
for it is a search engine we love, with a company many of us have come to love
I for one would love to see google have its own slashdot icon
Come to think of it, there are plenty of USELESS icons none of us give a damn about
the following are a few:
Heres hoping for a new google icon!!

Maybe some of us should take the time to stick BSA's leg right up thier own @$$'es :)
Perl might be great an all, however let us not forget the amazing power of awk
After all, what other lovely tool is extremely powerful, and yet fits on those boot floppies you guys use to install *nix?
(Keep in mind that a floppy only has 1440k, which isn't a whole lot when you start adding various needed tools.)
