Most of the complaints about the anti-copying technology were about using them in art projects, making parodies, etc. Now that people can download copies, in addition to being able to use the graphics in their projects, they can skip having to scan them.
I did a project in high school a while back on counterfeiting, and anti-counterfeiting techniques. One of the experts in a Nova video said that as computer printers get better, the concern won't be the large scale counterfeiters, since they're easier to track down due to the large volume and equipment needed. It would be people on their home computers scanning money and reprinting it. This was 10-12 years ago, when inexpensive printers didn't have the capability to print that well yet. Not sure if that prediction came true (don't have the SS/Treasury numbers onhand), but it's an interesting historical account.
excessive pork spending of a republican congress coupled with a republican president
You need to start reading some more bills being signed into law. Both parties have pet projects built into bills that have nothing to do with those projects, and those pet projects take money. The war in Iraq is taking a good chunk of money, which worries me, but at least I know what amount of money is going where. There needs to be a law that states that any parts of a bill have to be related to the bill's main purpose. Then we'd all get nice tax cuts and not have to worry about cutting other important spending (like a handful of the social programs that actually do some good and are well managed).
This post is such bullshit. I'm going to be voting for Bush in November for many reasons. I've also not voted Republican in every election. That blows your whole theory right there.
A few of the reasons? I'd rather have a president who tries doing the right thing instead of the popular thing. I'd rather have a president who wants to lower my taxes rather than raise them (Kerry claims he can pay for all his promises and not raise taxes, but studies have shown it's not possible). I'd rather have a president that is pro-life and anti-gay marriage (sorry if this offends anyone, but it's just my own opinion) than one who won't take a stand either way. There are more reasons, but those are the first ones that popped in my head.
If he, or the injured people, don't believe in God or prayer, then to them it wouldn't make a difference if I prayed or not. They would view it as irrelevant and pointless.
The only situation I could see it really mattering is if they believed in God and prayer, but WANTED to die or be injured (doubtful).
People are hypersensitive about religion. Did my post REALLY step on anyone's toes? I've known a good number of agnostics and atheists (both pleasant people and mean people), and the only ones that would get offended if I had a silent personal prayer before a meal are the same ones that were looking for ANY reason to start an arguement.
I'd be willing to bet that none of the people that posted jokes in the main thread knew the individual that died. I agree that humor is a way of coping with loss, but that doesn't fit with posts like:
1. "First Assasination Attempt?" 2. "Pot and Hippies.. What do you expect?" 3. "was the car's onboard navigation system running windows? apparently..." 4. "Looks like the pidgeon got/dev/null" 5. "RMS survives... isn't that inSANE?"
Those are just the first 5 I found. I had to make a joke when my last dog had to be put to sleep, so I understand the whole coping thing perfectly. There's a big difference between coping and being insensitive.
That's fine. You can be oversensitive about it. A few notes, though:
1. You misused "quotes". I believe I may have spelled "condolances" wrong, so I'll ignore this.
2. Mentioning that people of faith should pray is not a public display of religion no more than mentioning homosexuality is a public display of man on man or woman on woman relationships. It's a public comment about a private activity.
3. You'll note that I said "Christians" or people of other faith. If you are neither, then the comment didn't really apply to you and you shouldn't feel like I was trying to push religion on you or whatever you think my purpose was.
4. Many of the jokes were not innocent. They were insensitive. I have no problem with people using humor to cope with loss, but that wasn't the case here.
Freedom of religion goes hand in hand with freedom from religion, so your comment about public displays of religion strikes me as offensive. What gives you the right to say what I can or cannot do when it comes to religion (as long as I'm not forcing it on you)? Just like I can't force you to "pray".
I have no problem with people that don't believe in God (dated an atheist for 2 years), or don't practice religion actively. I only have a problem with people who try to make me feel bad for saying something heartfelt that they can just ignore if they don't like. Go back under your bridge.
In addition to the other responses you'll get, please check out this thread. You'll notice that a handful of the posts are from people that knew these individuals, or had been around them within the past few days.
There's a good chance that 1 slashdot account will never be used again, which is a sad thing for us all. Not to mention that the individual that died wasn't just a member of the community, he was a contributor... something that makes him stand apart from most of us.
Condolances to the family and friends of the individual killed. Good luck on a quick recovery to the injured individuals.
It's always sad when people die, but when they're connected to you in some way (even an abstract way), it hits a little harder. Any Christians (or other faiths, for that matter) should say a quick prayer for everyone involved.
As for the/. crowd that needs to try making a joke out of it (Gates/MS jokes), try and imagine if the individual who died was your father, or brother. If you can still make a joke about it, you're sick.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin? Granted, they may not be as high as a lot of the other people on the list, but they should be on it. How many other companies are having as big of an impact on the Internet as Google? Not many.
This is a good thing. There's little reason to enable wi-fi in the chipset, and this eliminates the chance that something will be wrong with it. This means fewer patches and a more stable system.
We don't install the custom software by hand each time. You build.msi installer files (doesn't need user interaction) and apply them to specific computers using the Active Directory. It's simple, easy, and has worked perfectly for every bit of software we have so far. You can even bundle patches and apply them this way.
Reimaging DOES work for backups. We do it at our company all the time. We just make sure users know as soon as they're hired that 1) they need to store all their files on a network drive and 2) their wallpaper could be lost at any time. The wallpaper is the only thing we allow users to customize, and if they want to set it back up after a re-image it only takes a few minutes. Additionally, we very easily could set up roaming profiles which are stored on the server which would get around all customization issues.
No, but I'm definitely going to vote for him. Have never been able to stand Feingold. I talk politics with all my friends, but have never had the time to actually work for a campaign yet.
So do you watch CNN? How about CBS? NBC? Read The New York Times? Slashdot? Every news outlet is slanted one way or another, it's just a matter of how subtly they do it.
As I said in another post, The Milwaukee Journal often uses AP stories which seem to be very well balanced, but then will exclude certain paragraphs they deem unnecessary, or filler, and the articles end up having a liberal slant.
Also, if you get on Fox's case, you need to get on CBS's as well, since they both claim to provide balanced news and offer biased news instead. The media bias is annoying, which is why I read liberal papers (Milwaukee Journal, NY Times, cnn.com) and watch liberal news shows (NBC, ABC, CBS) but listen to conservative radio.
Exactly. How many people are complaining that Slashdot slants to the left? I'm a card-carrying Republican and once in a while it annoys me, but I'm smart enough to ignore the bias and just look at the facts. Same goes if I watch Fox News. I would assume most other Slashdot readers are the same.
Our local newspaper (the Milwaukee Journal) is awful when it comes to being liberally slanted, and while the conservatively slanted public radio shows often try pointing out the bias, it's just ignored by the newspaper and the public. There is NO unbiased news. That's just something we have to live with.
As the other poster said, just leave your cell phone at home. I go hiking on occassion and cell phone coverage is a nice security blanket if I should happen to get hurt. I just turn my phone off while I'm actually hiking, so I can't be bothered.
If there are any avid hikers out there, Devil's Lake in Wisconsin is a MUST. It's great for rock climbing and scuba diving too.
One way to fix that type of problem would be to base the levels completely off benchmark numbers. It would require a standardized benchmarking program, which I'm sure MS would LOVE to provide.
I received a significant raise a few months back. Significant is almost 10% of my salary. I got a 20% increase last year. My company has only cut a few people, and those cuts were based on performance, not budget. I do programming and tech support, in case you're wondering.
The other IT workers here have gotten good raises as well. Two friends that program for the local phone company have gotten decent raises. One friend that assembles computers at a local store got a 50 cent / hour raise (he's part time). Finally, one other good friend who works for a banking software company got a good raise as well.
So, it seems primarily in the programming areas, but it may be just because I mainly know programming people.
We use the Baraccuda spam firewall here at work and it works great. We have approximately 250 users, so the smallest version was fine for us. It's blocking an average of 1000 spam, 100 virus infected emails, and allowing less than 5 spam through per day (company wide, not per user). It's NEVER incorrectly blocked a message, especially since I have it set up with the proper whitelists from our business partners. I've spent an average of 15 minutes a week tweaking the settings, and it automatically updates its filters, so administration costs are low. I'd recommend it to any company.
Someone else in the thread did the math. The Bill Gates Foundation has given $1.2B so far, which is around 5% of his income. So, assuming you make $50K/year, have you given $2500 to charity? Doubt it. Between my church and the humane society I give close to $1000 a year, and that's far more than most of the people I know.
I was going to moderate you as flamebait or overrated since I have mod points, but I felt it more important to actually state how your point is so wrong.
The Bill Gates Foundation donated $10 million to Milwaukee Public Schools this year, in order to help them with their plan of breaking up the large schools and creating smaller ones. The money has facilitated this and the inner city students are already showing increased grades and scores on their standardized tests.
Without the money, the switch would have taken close to a decade. With the money it will take 2-3 years. His foundation has donated to MANY good causes like this, so who the fuck cares if he gives additional money to CMU?
You come across as a complete idiot on this one. Gates may be a ruthless businessman with illegal business practices, but his charitable giving is above and beyond what every other billionaire gives.
It may have as many antioxidants, but it also has a hell of a lot more carbs. If you REALLY want to get a lot of antioxidants, try blueberries instead. All the good stuff, little of the bad.
You could only make the claim that Linux was gaining on Windows in the geek community. Remember, in order to project a sample set across a population, the sample set has to be representative of the population as a whole. Now, if Google (or even a smaller site with a mixed crowd) were to show an increase, THEN you could say that a gain was made in the population as a whole.
Problem solved...
