I don't want to buy a business. I want to put in an honest day's work and get paid a fair amount. That fair amount should be enough, if I'm responsible and save for me to retire on. The fact that we force our retirees to gamble with their retirement is appalling. The fact that we allow that to be used as political leverage (you can't enforce the laws against investment banks, think of my 401K!), is even more so.
Not with RAID you can't. If you don't decrease the unrecoverable error rate as you increase the size of the volume, eventually you get to the point where you're almost certain to hit an unrecoverable error while rebuilding your volume. So the real question is, how is the read error rate on these tightly packed data domains?
Do you whine because you can't (for all practical purposes) replace the keypad on your remote control? (I'm sure SOMEONE does; but...). Do you complain because you can't effectively repair your DVD burner?
Wouldn't it be better if we could? Why does everything have to be disposable?
Think of investing as gambling. Yeah, you can read up on the odds all you want, but at the end of the day the house wins. As a society, we just shouldn't force our citizens to gamble if they want to be financially responsible.
We live in a time when robocalling a few thousand people with false directions is sufficient to affect the outcome of elections. Do you really think imprisoning millions of largely poor people doesn't affect the outcome of elections? You don't think that, e.g., prison reform advocacy could leverage that constituency in any way?
There's no such thing as a "creative activist". You're either honest, or you're not. Mike Daisey was dishonest and his dishonesty damaged his cause. That's about all there is to it.
Do you want a pony too? You can't give people the ability to remove someone's right to vote, and expect them not to use that to solidify their position. Find ways to criminalize the opposition, and you remove large swaths of people from the electorate.
And people die in war, when you have a war with a terrorist organization the line between civilian and insurgent is thin mistakes are made.
Which is why we should cover casualties, military and civilian, accidental and intentional, as much as possible. The more aware people are of this simple fact, the less likely they will be to tolerate war.
Vote for me, I'll put our allied troops in danger just because I don't like war.
Really now. Who's more concerned about the safety of the troops? The ones who want to send them to war, or the ones who want to end it?
Because the people who make the rules engineer them in order to disenfranchise large portions of the population as a way of securing power. They work the system so that they can get away with much, much worse behavior than what would be criminal if we did it. Congress is full of people who think the rules don't apply to them because they're strong or smart enough to game the system. And in most cases they're right. Those are the people we really have to worry about. A felon with the right to vote is harmless compared to a representative in a gerrymandered district.
Exposing an inconsistency in a positive claim is quite different, and much easier, than proving a negative. "You have failed to prove X" is not the same as "X is false".
Should everyone stop voting for the party they felt to represent them the best, because of a couple of bad apples?
If you are represented best by a bunch of criminal thugs, then feel free to continue voting for them. Your apologetics are every bit as disgusting as their tactics.
It would have been more interesting if there was stuff in the world to do. Encourage me to explore by putting some chests with items, that sort of thing. I spent a lot more time aimlessly wandering the countryside in Dragon Quest VIII than SoC.
Yes, I am sure about that. If my land lord had been taping me and my GF every night for the past 5 years I don't see how throwing him in jail for a decade would improve anything for anyone.
Rear ending any vehicle ever means that you were following too close. That's entirely under your control, and you deserve the consequences for whatever happens. Back the fuck off.
Our worst criminals tend to be strongly socially stunted and fixated only on immediate gratification and immediate consequences.
True, but bankers never even go to jail, let alone get the death penalty.
Emergent behavior in a complex system of networks? Who knew?

Maybe Wil can actually do something funny with the idea?

Do you really need a crappy integrated database app? Aren't one of the powerful free stand alone databases capable enough?
Hey, I heard that Newton guy got all his laws overturned. What an idiot! Better not use Newton for anything anymore.
I suspect the GP is not Australian and doesn't realise Aussies can sort out their problems without violence.
Then do it.
The thing is, no-one wants to
Sounds like you can't fix anything at all then.
What do you mean why haven't we already done so? Why do you think we have the highest prison population in the world?

^This is how crazy you have to be to actually believe in ESP.
In the US it's common to take someones life and/or liberty because of their pursuit of happiness.
Should everyone stop voting for the party they felt to represent them the best, because of a couple of bad apples?

If ESP is ever proven real, the ones that will be most interested are the physicists.

I would mind, but I wouldn't lock you in a cage for a decade. Get some fucking perspective.
