  1. Khave on Optical Feedback For Perfect Coffee · · Score: 1
I have a Khave coffee maker at home which is coffee science to it's limit for me. I don't need an LED.

My coffee maker turns the cone with the filter in a circle while it makes the coffee so you can filter all of the grounds instead of just the grounds in the center, giving you a true cup of coffee for the grounds you toss into the thing.

Now, a spinning filter tray and an LED? Perhaps a little too much. :)

I had to sign a contract when I started working with the company I'm with now stating that they can use any pictures taken of me on the corporate website for promotional reasons, and I asked them to change the contract because I didn't want my face to be the staple for the company I work for. I thing their reasons for hiding their employees faces were wrong, but you have to ask yourself if the employees would have minded in the first place.

  5. Stardust on American Gods · · Score: 1
You didn't mention Stardust in your initial blurb, but I would have to say that's my second favourite book that Gaiman worked on. The other being Good Omens. The idea that nursery ryhmes were powerful really got me about that book. I think Gaiman really found a great way to tie in a traditional fairy tale with a love story, while keeping the mythology of those nursery ryhmes alive and reminding us where they come from.

    I think he's a true hero. :)

  6. Surprised on P2P vs. RIAA: RIAA Wins · · Score: 1

Sure the corporation has a lot of money but there are 250 million American citizens who are supposed believe in free speech and freedom of expression. I think all ya'll should kick some ass. What ever happened to the land of the free? I don't think the RIAA is playing fairly, and neither does anyone else.

  7. Good Question on What Do You Do To Relieve Lower Back Pain? · · Score: 1
My back went out about two months ago for like six days, so I got some answers on what to do. There are three things I could recommend:

    1. Celebrex: This is a relaxant that is easy on the stomach. You can talk to your doctor about a prescription. Basically most back problems are caused by inflamation. I was also told that most back problems (spasms that is) will generally go away within about three months, but the cause will still be there, so celebrex it is. Now if you are a serious coder and your a coffee drinker (like I am) then celebrex would probably be the best relaxant due to the fact that prolonged cafeine exposure can cause a reflux (along with nicotine, alcohol and mint). Anything that would be easier on the stomach with stimulants would be better for anyone.

    2. Your doctor will always tell you to move around, be active, and not to stay in bed or stay off of your feet. The desire to rest may be great, and the desire to not be active may be great, but really it's the best thing for your back. These first two things are the best way to help the situation from occurring often. The third is the way to relieve the pain when it does occur.

    3. Magna Bloc magnets are the best way I've ever found to relieve pain anywhere in about fifteen minutes. I'm actually very serious about these things. I didn't think they would help the first time I heard about them, but I don't take acetamenophin (sp?) or ibuprofen anymore due to these neo-dymian discs. When my back went out it made my time easier to keep active by using these. I'm not really sure how exactly they work, but any pain you have in your body Magna Bloc will literally relieve it in fifteen minutes. You have to be sure to follow the instructions though. For more information on how to obtain Magna Bloc you can email me.
    I hope this helps! :)

The current state of the school system won't teach them how to live past 30 without debt and worry. GNOME has little consitency yes, and if you're going to struggle with Netscape and Star Office then you've *far* missed the point. You can use KDE2.x for your Desktop, Konqueror as your web browser, and I've discovered that Hancom Office is actually a pretty decent office sweet that integrates well with my KDE Desktop (and it's QT based).

So forgive me for saying so but he can blow it out his you know what. Who in their right minds are using Netscape on any platform anymore? Konq it up baby, the Linux Desktop is just being born.

  12. Ever work for an ISP? on Go Extreme, Programmatically Speaking · · Score: 1
If you have you'd know that XP is a religion in an ISP web development office.

I worked for Trytel Internet for eight months doing web development and left because of the development model they chose to adopt. It's difficult to develop anything modular, extendable and scalable when your customer needs these twenty things next Tuesday.

Now that's not to say that the model is wrong or bad, it's just not what I personally would subscribe to. I like documents stating that indeed we need a certain number of things and we have this reasonable timeline in which to do them in.

The only real flaw I see in the idea of XP is if you have managers who make horrible business decisions then it's kind of a null isn't it? :)

  14. I Think I've Had Enough on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1
I'm not going to rant, but a small comment is needed or I'll scream.

How is it that all the victims, those of the dead students and dead teachers don't bother to remember that these kids were social outcasts. These kids were probably isolated, teased, demeaned and talked about behind their backs. You can't blame a video game company, a record label, or NBC for your kid's violence tendancies. It's a factor yes, but consider that adolescence is hard enough without having to worry about being told your a loser and a nobody by an entire student body.

A lot of kids have loving parents who even when those kids come home feeling diminutive and broken can be made to remember that they're somebody and that they belong.

These kids were probably not taught tolerance, and above all you can't expect a 16 year old boy or girl to not snap under extreme social pressure or feelings of anger and pain that are left unchecked by someone who can temper those feelings. Blame the parents for not telling them enough that they had worth, blame the student body for rejecting these kids sovereign claims as individuals with their own minds and feelings. Don't randomly attack a media that to date hasn't produced murderers and gun-trigger crazies of us all. The number of people who play Quake who take out a cafeteria pales in comparison to the number of people who play Quake who are relatively balanced and just need some stress relief.

I think these people are too grief-stricken to realize what they're doing and who's really to blame.

In Canada DSL speeds are higher in the major centers because all of the central offices are owned by Bell Canada. There's only one phone company for local calls. I would imagine that affords them the ability to more strategically place COs to overlap and cover all the areas in major centers better.

Cable however, isn't fast anywhere. ;) I live in an area of Ottawa near downtown and there are five buildings in the same place. Most of the connectivity in these buildings is through @Home. I was an @Home customer for a while and got tired of paying $40.00/mo. for 20K/sec on a good day. I have DSL through Magma Communications now and I get 120K/sec. consistently. *shrugs*

I'm from Canada so I don't know much about American law but don't you guys have something in your constitution that allows the people freedom of speech? Freedom of association? Freedom to do what they wish with what is there own? You can't outlaw the freedom to give away your intellectual property because that would suggest that your freedom to share ideas should also be limited. In this fashion you couldn't talk to people about how to keep the coffee maker clean at work, how to build a treehouse, or how to bake a cake.

Intellectual property is both what we can create and what we can think. Limiting one is implicatino to limit the other. It's unconsitutional in your country.

Also, how will U.S. law stop Linus from developing the Kernel if he's Finnish, or from the KDE guys developing KDE, or from someone in Canada developing an Open Source Windows clone. I think the man's afraid that capitalism may not exist the way he use to want it to.

Before everyone starts getting excited or annoyed, it should first be remembered that UNIX doesn't have a standard GUI, and for the UNIX tools to have GUI parts or GUI reactions we would have to settle on which GUI would make the best fit. Or perhaps a default toolkit that all GUIs interface with? Either way, I think CLI and GUI should remain seperate.

I think someone out there is trying to make UNIX easier for *them* to understand.
