I agree you on product quality, and I use Macs, iPods/iPhones, and iWork (when I can), but Ballmer reminds me of any other arrogant and out of touch CEO out there, and is just a spokeshole for a collective of people who actually create cool things when they have near unlimited resources. I give him little credit but what the heck, give him all the blame, after all, that's what he is paid to do.

Well, I think you are missing the point. Facebook is not about discrete uploaded data by one user. That's a part of it, but it's all about the interaction and glues between the data shared from your machine and others. I think we should give Matt Asay the benefit of the doubt, and assume that's what he meant. That gorp is impossible to recreate or to re-store locally. There is no real way to get any of that out (some would argue 'why would you?'). But from a knowledge perspective, social networks are group silos, and if the farm burns, so it all goes. One might ask 'so what?'. But apparently the article was written as a tribute to an old Eagles song, and not much else is revealed, and no smell of colitas here.

No mention of the thousands of free books already online, no mention of Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, etc. nor authors like Cory Doctrow? That's quality reporting for ya...slanted towards feeding the hungry money machines. But bad reporting aside, I've been doing all my reading online now for years, as anything made of paper is impossible to deal with on the road and in the Himalayas, unless you can read dogeared greasy ancient paperbacks and mags left over from generations of English-reading tourists. For books, I use Kindle for iPhone and Stanza, and they are both pretty good apps. Plenty of free/cheap stuff to keep you entertained (especially if you like old sci-fi or the classics). If you learn to live with less, you'll be happier:)

  11. Demonoid is out of commission as well right now... on The Pirate Bay Sails To a New Home · · Score: 1

Demonoid is out of commission as well right now, been down for almost two weeks. The mad craze for trying new software (and to make all the updates for Snow Leopard) has been dampened considerably, and peeps now find time to walk the dog and water the garden. My inside sources tell me the real reason Demoniod is down is due to the kidnapping of their lead database manager by MPAA insurgents, who stormed the facility in late September, extracting the prisoner and fragging a server cluster on the way out. Desperate times call for desperate measures it seems. Meanwhile, software sales are actually up around the globe, as folks are paying for piddly upgrades in hopes their apps will continue to work in OSX 10.6.1. With Demoniod and Piratebay down, the vast majority of decent Leopard torrents have dried up, leaving folks with unseeded downloads for Sims2 and ancient versions of Adobe CS suites. These are dark times indeed.

  14. Re:Herd immunity on Microsoft Blocks Pirates From Security Essentials Software · · Score: 1

I think a distinction needs to be made here between hackers and users. You say "... or 2) increase company profit by trying to coerce hackers into buying a copy by not allowing them this download." The number of hackers using pirated software must be 1 in 100,000 or less. In hundreds of thousands of cases in Nepal alone, ordinary people who don't even have a clue what a hacker is, buy "quasi-legal" copies of XP and Vista or have them installed on PCs that they purchase here. They are clueless that this software is not legal (after all, they bought the disk from a licensed, tax-paying retailer). When they get WGA notifications, they simply ignore them. I don't think you can call these villagers "hackers" as they barely know how to install an anti-virus package. China, India, Burma, Sikkim, Pakistan, Afghanistan (all of SAARC) is in the same boat. Users here just live with rootkits and other baddies, and make up the huge botnet or whatever is out there. Even if given the option to buy the software, there is no way they can (the cost of the license is over one month's salary and/or they have no credit cards, as US currency is illegal to hold by natives). It seems since MS helped create this mess, they should do something to help fix it. I suppose it needs UN intervention at this point to bring about herd immunity in developing countries.
