i have this: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDe tail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=41642105 epspon photomate. at $150, it prints 4x6 prints full-bleed wonderfully (without the need for cropping)
we've been printing for 6 months, on the epson ink/paper combo (permabrite ?) and it looks great, with no short-term fading at all.
A pro-photographer friend of mine, who has large epson printers, swears by the Epson special ink/paper combo: he backs up Epson's statement: "'.. And, PictureMate photos will last longer than all the alternatives available today - about 2 to 4 times longer than photo lab prints...."
i use this little box to pring out the 4x6 snaps instead of using shutterfly, but i use them for larger sizes, etc. It's $29.99 retail for the 7 color ink pack and 100 sheets of paper, so about $0.25 per print, after HW costs.
it's very small and portable (see the handle) and although you could use it via USB to Mac or XP, as a real printer, we use our CF/SD cards to print, as i have enough USB cables.
Nikon D70 -> CF-card-reader -> Photoshop (XP or OS X) -> "finals" back on CF -> Picture mate (so we don't waste printing a contact sheet).
Some of the larger units by HP or Epson have an LCD dislpay so you can 'see' what you want, but we always touch up with software via our laptop(s), and like the portability, so we don't miss an LCD on the printer. But if you want camera->printer without a laptop, an LCD wouldn't hurt.

a broadband provider provided a new client of mine a modem/router combo with their newly subscribed connection- and wouldn't take it back.
what a pain. it took an act of god for them to tell us what the admin username/pw was on this combo-unit; I just wanted to get DMZ & port forwarding set up for remote access to this site (via dynsns.org) as we already had a firewall all configured fine, and ready to go; now we're double nating, and i needed to change the address space on the lan, to b/c the nat range behind their Firewall was fixed and GUESS WHAT happened to match what we already had at this site. oh joy.
what should've cost them.5 hrs of site time took 2.5 thanks to the stubbornness of the ISPs techs not wanting me to get root access to this router of theirs, and the lack of configuration on the unit, and their iron-fist policy on us using it.
they should at least give you the option for a straight layer 2 device.

DON'T use disk utilities to format the disk. Rather, use the 10.3 CD as such: insert into the PB, select, either "archive and install" or "clean install" - and it'll reboot and deal w/ the existing OS (10.2.x) as spec'd, then put on 10.3.

If this is a threat to MS, watch them exert pressure on the pc manufacturers to change the default boot device (and maybe even put in a pw) for home users !

and unlike garmin models, the 'make route (from track)' uses all of the trackpoints (memory limited)- so with your many ($44) 64mb cards, you may find that you can track for, say, 18 hours (it's a hypothetical number)- whereas with garmins, you'd need to take the laptop- b/c when they save routes to tracks on the GPSr- they don't use ALL the trackpoints (breadcrumbs) they use only some, so your get a much 'rougher' faceted travel path.
