Sun sued Microsoft because they were adding extensions to the language that can make Java on Windows incompatible with other platforms. Portability goes out the window (pun not intended) when you have to program for java (knowing that 95% of the applets will run the crippled MS VM)
Sure, speed was superior (especialy for drawing code). I think Microsoft should stop being a baby, they signed for the Java code and that they would make an compliant VM. They didnt do that, so they had to stop.
Im sure Sun wouldnt mind if they continue working on Java, as long as they follow the Java standard. Let them include it, it makes my life easier:-)
Well, having worked on an alternative GUI system for underneat our own GUI components I noticed that the 100 ms repaint timer is a good thing.
From what I have seen, you can get up to 5-10 repaints in very rapid sucession.
The main point about it is that it resets the timer after every repaint is set.
The effect is hardly noticable, but it sure saves resources.
Also, why not asynchronous?
If you override a component and put a call to its own repaint in the update code, then what?
You get a stack overflow after a while?
We use it pretty often in our animation code and it works allright.
On another note, when you work at this level with the GUI, you will notice a lot of incosistancies between JVM's
I can second that, having learned Java and C, C++ in College and taking VB as an additional class, I can tell VB is a broken language and the speed is nowhere comparable to even Java
Im still in college right now, but im working a part time job in software development.
I had a temp contract when I came in and seeing that after 11 September the software market crapped out quite a few people lost their jobs, ofcourse they were the contract people;-)
For some reason though, my manager got me a full contract.
If you need any inspiration, you should try to read Tanenbaums book on Operating systems.
It includes a cd with the OS and he included the sources in the book explaining some of the features in OS's with source code:)
Makes it very good to understand.
You should at least have a good understanding on how existing systems work and what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Then come up with something better.
Be sure to let us know how you progress
I have one of those failing Maxtor drives.
It works fine here most of the time, but if you put some heavy load on it it will make bad blocks.
Not all Maxtors are like this, it was just a bad batch(March 2000), and im sure you could trade them in for a better one at the time.
We didnt feel like bothering anyways, the problems are only minor for our home (parent infested) computer.
I'd buy SCSI anyways
I tried to install mandrake 7.1 as well. The installation is pretty clean on my system, but I never got my memory to work. I have 196 MB (A 64MB block and a 128 MB block) With Wintendo it works fine, with Mandrake 7.0 its great. With mandrake 7.1 It only sees 64 MB and is slow. I guess im moving back to Mandrake 7.0 for the time being
Oh really, not free?
Well probably not free as speech, but you can download the JRE for free.
Its just a hell of a lot to download (10 mb's)

Vegastrike
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net
He is probably living on a Dutch campus.
:)
I know someone who has a setup like that, I verified the speed and its good.
Ofcourse you arent having the 100 mbit all to yourself there
Nothing wrong with my sex drive here :-)

True, but it might not always be so bad.

Here in my local library you can get the cd's or books with them.
Last time I checked they were a bit outdated though.
Im in College right now and allthough a lot of people see Microsoft as better, everybody agrees that they dont give the best support.
Not biased, its only because of the fireworks that I noticed its the 4th Not American either :)
