If you do some more research you'll find that 0.9 repeating is actually equal to 1, and you'll also find lots of armchair mathmaticians arguing the point.
Or it was the Ancients that got caught up in arrogance, allowing the relatively weak Wraith to defeat them.
No fair watching the show first, then posting!:)
I hope they expand on the defeat a bit, maybe make the Ancients pasifists or something. Because if they were not, it seems they would have been extemely stupid to have lost control of 1000 populated planets.
The new gates are cool, the remote activation feature is neat, but when you are fleeing an enemy, it seems really dumb to broadcast the gate address, of your final destination, even if you do have a gate force-field.

Why do athletes, that contribute NOTHING to society, get paid the most?
Now, I'm no sportsfan, but to assert that sports are worthless is absurd. One of the most important aspects of society is socialization, and sporting events and teams have a huge influence on that. There are few other events that stimulate as much social interaction as professional sports (of course amature and 'little league' stuff is important too).
It could also be that they aren't all that bad-ass, its just that for whatever reason the Ancients were particularly vulnerable to them. At least, thats what I'm hoping for.
As much as the generally atheist/. community [...]
Is that true? Or are they just not the highly visible religious type? As an atheist myself it seems that there just aren't many atheists around, but that could easily be a selection bias, its not like we attend meetings or anything, and I think its not uncommon for atheists to deny it just to avoid being recognized (I used to do that).
I attribute this to them not knowing how to run the gate properly at first. We know that even now the software isn't full implimentation of what exists in the DHD's (although they may have made some improvments since the episode where their error handling caused problems). Presumably that first version was even more rudimentary.
Of course, it could also be that long FX sequences cost more and get tedious after the first few viewings:)
If I were an olympic diver, I would definately perform a flawless bellyflop during competition just to see how the judges would rate it. I mean, if I were a judge, I'd give a good bellyflop from the high platform at least an '8'.
Mostly I just like saying 'bellyflop' though. Its a fun word, 'bellyflop'. Try it, 'bellyflop'.
Which of course makes one wonder if a fighter pilot could target specific control surfaces to cause damage of that nature.
While I'd expect a very deailed investigation to find some evidence of that, it wouldn't take very many guys in black suits to either prevent that kind of investigation, or corrupt the information that came out of it.
I'm not a tinfoil hatter, but I wouldn't put such a thing outside the realm of believeability. I think there is probably much more of this stuff that happens than we would expect, but that most of it has to do with publicity control. In this case, the plane was going to go down, either on top of the whitehouse (presumably) or shot down over a field. Either way, everybody dies. So they shoot it down. Now they can spin it to turn the passengers into heros (which may indeed be true) which helps to bring the country together in a stressful time, or they can admit to shooting it down, which would be highly likely to cause lots of strife.
Honestly, I'm not sure which one I would choose if I were in the position to make the decision. I have a feeling I'd tell the public that it was shot down, even though it would be a nightmare of lawsuits and blame. But I can see the advantage in lying about it until the time of crisis has passed. The right decision for the common good is probably to lie, which is why I'd be a terrible politician.
I wonder if, given an inverted starting attitude, there is a certain height at which the fall would be less dangerious if it were either higher or lower.
Above this height the cat would have had time to attain a fully non-inverted attitude and so would better cope with higher impact forces. Below this height and although the cat would still be in a bad attitude, the velocity attained would be sufficently small that injury would be less likely.
This experiment would require a standard cat, as I would expect that small, fluffy, long-haired cats with tails would have a lower terminal velocity than enormously fat, bald, tailless cats. Likewise, previously fat cats who had lost substantial amounts of weight would have enough loose, baggy skin might have an advantage above certain velocities, where their excess skin would flap about in the wind, helping keep the velocity down. By stretching out their little arms and legs they might even be able to form little parachutes or planes, with which they could glide safely to the ground, much like a flying squirrel. But bigger. And uglyier.
A highly damaging virus could be made which makes random choices on when to utterly trash its host.
It might be more interesting to have it base the decision partly on the local infection rate, such that when the majority of hosts on the local subnet are infected, or when infection rates stop rising, 90% of the hosts are trashed at the same time.
due to people understanding identity theft being a problem
Don't you mean identity piracy? Or maybe identity infringment? After all, its not like those people were actually depriving you of the use of your identity.
Don't forget that the US population is nearly ten times Canada's population, so the highest legislative level is going to be an order of magnitude farther removed.
This is where I'd like to see computer technology helping more. It seems like there ought to be a way to use computers to allow a smaller government to more effectively serve more people. A smaller government would be more efficent and could respond more quickly to the needs of the country.
I'm still waiting for a tree-view in that little drop-down on the 'back' and 'forward' buttons.
When I'm searching for something I generally have a root at google or something, and then several branches with multiple sub-branches from there. After I've evaluated a number of options, I want to be able to go back to the root and see an overview. Bookmarking every page is just dumb, I end up with 50 or 60 bookmarks, all for pages about the same thing, and I can't remember which one is which. but I usually can remember a little about how I got to a particular page. If I had a nice treeview I could just jump down to where I want to go.
The History tab doesn't cut it because its URL based instead of navigation based. The pages need to be arranged based on how I visited them.
It would have been worse if the mission after the Challenger had exploded as it had plutonium onboard which would have taken out the entire state of Florida not just the shuttle. Which would you prefer: half a dozen people dead or an entire state obliterated in the blink of an eye?
Man, thats a hard question. Maybe if you changed it to a different state?
Is there an entry level program that might meet your needs?
For the most part, yes, Gimp will do a high percentage of what I want, and I use it at work, but Photoshop's UI is more usable, or at least more intuative.
If Adobe would either rent me a Photoshop license on an hourly basis (on the order of a buck an hour would be reasonable), I'd be happy to pay for it. I would not be interested in a cut-down version of Photoshop, if I were going to settle for less, I'd just use Gimp.
I just don't see any harm in using it. They aren't loosing any money on me as they don't currently have a licensing model I would pay for. There just aren't any compelling reasons, ethical or monetary, to not use it.
Nope, I don't write and very rarely play games. If I did, I'd probably buy them, because they are reasonably priced for the amount of play time I would get. I'd probably also stick to the $10 games from a few years ago (the last game I played was SoulBringer, $10 at Wal-mart, and it came bundled with Fallout), which is a very reasonable price.
I don't have a problem with paying for software as long as its either reasonably priced for as much as I use it, or useful for making me money (like my development enviroments).
Take Photoshop again, I might use it once or twice a month. At that rate, I'm just not interested in paying more than about 20 or 30 bucks for it. Now, if Adobe would rent me a license for a buck or two an hour, I'd be more than happy to pay them for the use of the software.
I realize its hypocritical to pirate other people's software while studying to be a developer
Na. I'm a professional developer, going on 10 years now, and I pirate software.
The way I see it, if someone uses my software to make money, then they ought to be paying me for the work I did on the software. If they are using the software as a hobbiest, or not-for-profit, they they don't owe me anything.
So, I'm fine with using my pirated copy of photoshop to edit an occasional Hubble image to turn it into good wallpaper, or touching up the levels on a photo. Sure, I could use gimp for these things (I have it installed too), but I like photoshops UI better. But I'm not making any money on it, so I don't see why I should have to pay Adobe $700 for it.
Now, if they had a price point of around, say, 25, maybe 30 bucks, I'd pay for it. I bought Trillian because its sanely priced ($25). I just don't see any software I use at home (aside from Quicken, which I bought) ever giving me more value than about 20 bucks. I would not be interested in a stripped-down version for a smaller price though.

They are more likely to be standing outside colleges offering $10.2M for curing the SYMPTOMS of cancer.
Ha, lots of college students are already smoking that.
You must now go hang out with the jocks.
And he's not talking about he people.

We can ensure that all olympic divers enter the water perfectly perpendicular to the surface
Oh, but its so much more fun when they are perfectly parallel!

It seems that infecting through the hosts backdoor would be less effective for computer viruses.

Well, maybe when played at 150 dbSPL?

I have not had a chance to calculate the profit potential of a kilogram of aerogel, but if a Rutan-style spaceplane
Can you fit a kilogram of aerogel into something that small?
