I understand why you didn't mention your app, but the difference between your program that makes no money and a similar program that makes thousands of dollars probably has little to do with technical merit but on how it is presented. I don't have an iphone, but if I did, I probably would have checked out your game.

Except if you really wanted windows 7 you have had ample opportunities to pre-purchase it at a significant discount. You can even preorder it now for $30 if you have an education domain email. And if you don't want to do that you can always get an OEM copy from newegg with a floppy cable. The only people who pay those obscene prices are people who buy it at Best Buy, and hell if they are doing that they might as well add on the "Best Buy extended warranty" and $5 disc protection as well. The people who want windows for cheap can get it for cheap, the rest are happy to subsidize us by paying the inflated prices. And if you're on this website and use windows, its probably because you need software that runs on windows, many of which dwarf the cost of the OS. Cubase 5 education edition is going to run me $300 and surely it is less complex and requires less development and patching than an OS.

Yah legally sure. It is just hilarious that you can "hack" a windows mobile phone (xdadevelopers) with no major outrage from MS (they did raise a stink when ROMS had 3rd party illegal software, but otherwise left it alone). Apple's iphone is so locked down you have to jailbreak it just to install anything that isn't "Apple Approved" but has pretty much left jailbreakers alone. Yet meanwhile Google, who any reasonable person considers more open than MS, goes after Cyanogen.

Exactly. While Google claims to "do no evil" Monsanto's motto is "do anything to make profit no matter the cost". They're worse than Microsoft, because while Microsoft dabbles with evil, Monsanto embraces it. So I'm skeptical of pretty much anything that Monsanto wants, because I know they are ruthless in obtaining it and they will do what it best for them, not for me. While I believe GM crops are going to be the future, the rest of you can continue to be test cases while I wait it out a bit.

If so, then OS X used to be dogshit slow because wasn't much of a overall speed difference for me between Vista, Leopard, and Ubuntu the last time I tried to do a comparison on my macbook pro. OS X and Vista were snappier than Ubuntu, but other parts are slower, and overall to me it felt like a wash. Yah this is anecdotal, but if I can't tell the difference, then the general public probably can't either.

What I got from your post is that the majority of the complaints I mentioned have lifestyle components and that "most patients are unable or unwilling to do what is necessary to change their health. It's that simple" so "there's not much else to do but try the medications." I don't necessarily disagree with this, I will mention that in my experience, most MDs do a pretty terrible job of encouraging lifestyle changes, probably due to the defeatist attitude you mentioned. Although anecdotal, I don't believe my experience is unique; over twenty years I've seen over a dozen MDs (usually due to insurance changing) and only one (Dr. Pluche in Camarillo, CA) who actually educated me like a naturopath would. "Looks like you did a lifestyle change. I'm surprised your physicians didn't ask you to take a food diary and go from there." The lifestyle change actually had little to do with it, the cure was the probiotics. I honestly believe most MDs want to help people the best that they can but when "there's not much else to do but try the medications" and when the medications are antidepressants or strong hypnotics, your toolbox is lacking.

I'm not sure if that is true, surely there a differences between violins due to craftsmanship. I'm by no means a classical affectionado (I couldn't tell if something was from Bach or Mozart) but awhile ago someone recommended Vitali's Chaconne and while searching for the best version I came to realize that although Sarah Chang was considered "inferior" to Heifetz I preferred her version better compared to Heifetz and Milstein. It could be her playing style, but I believe Heifetz and Milstein use a strat and Chang uses a Guarneri. To me the Strat seems shrill and I prefer the sound of the Guarneri, and that was even before I found out that was considered to be a superior violin.

  18. Re:Well Then on In Britain, Better Not Call It Bogus Science · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem is that even though there is evidence that some traditional therapies work, MDs have converted to 80% pharmaceuticals and 20% lifestyle changes, and they are trained in little else. So if you don't want stimulants for your kid with ADHD (now they have straterra, but it isn't very effective), the MD offers nothing else. If you have trouble sleeping, their toolkit consists of hardcore hypnotics. Mild depression or anxiety? All they have are brain-altering and or addictive drugs. Indigestion? You'll probably be on calcium or cimetidine the rest of your life. The reason "alternative therapies" exist is because MDs do such a terrible job of family care; they even joke family care is the specialty you go into if you fail your boards. All they know is pharmaceuticals. So these specialties exist because there is a demand for them, because they aren't getting better from the MDs (excluding the crazies who won't take any drug just because). I suffered from daily stomach problems for over a decade and saw several MDs and never got anything resolved. The best they could do was cimetidine which barely provided any relief (they found no ulcer, but I had daily abdominal pain). I finally got so frustrated I saw a "quack" licensed naturopath and after cleaning out my diet and replacing my gut bacteria I'm finally pain free. I don't buy into the homeopathy or "cracking your back can cure your asthma" bullshit but thankfully there is exists some other profession that isn't 100% pharmaceuticals.
