You only think it's really bad because you are thinking of it as them canceling a donation. In reality it was a bribe to get the contract to begin with, so really it should be thought of more as a mutual bribe cancelation. That's right, the city of NoLo is just as much at fault here people.
I am a student at Cornell University who frequently surfs the web during class, I don't ever remember giving my consent to have my grades compared to my browsing time...
I talked with the curator of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology recordings last year, asking why they didn't release their bird sounds under public domain. I guess part of their money comes from licensing bird sounds to TV stations and childrens toys, the kind that make sound when you touch them.
Even still, it is a shame that these recordings, the largest collection of its type in the world, is being hidden from the public just for what can't possibly be more than a few thousand dollars a year. (You can actually listen to most of the sounds in low resolution streaming on the web, but you can't do analysis at the quality they offer.)
And if Amazon can make a go of tagging, that may finally be the tipping point that makes the technology something every Tom, Dick and Harry knows about.
And just wait until Dick looks up all the stuff people have tagged with his name.
VIP membership refund? Hell, I want a refund on my tuition. I'm not paying 40 grand a year just for the drinking./sarcasm//not a p2p user (except bittorrent)
I was walking around campus yesterday when I saw a poster saying "Is Slashdot Your Home Page?" in huge letters. Apparently it was a recruiting poster for some investment firm. Of course I immediately appropriated it and thumbtacked it above my laptop in my room.
The reason we don't know how much global temperatures are going to rise is because we don't know enough about water vapor. Water vapor is thousands of times more potent than man made greenhouse gas. The main reason we can't 100% accurately predict the temperature is because we don't know for sure where the water vapor goes in the atmosphere. However, that does not mean that water vapor is causing global warming. Human emissions are the reason why there is more water vapor in the air than ever before. This isn't really knew, mainstream science has known this for ten plus years.
Accepted facts about global warming are as follows: a)We are putting more greenhouse gases into the air than ever before. b)Greenhouse gases trap heat. c)The earth is getting warmer.
No one disagrees on these facts. The only legitamite disagreement is on how much warmer the earth will get, and this is because we don't know where the water vapor sits in the atmosphere. Supercomputers estimate the temperature increase will be between 1.5 and 11 degrees celcius in the next 50 years. At the low end we are seriously screwed. At the high end it is the end of civilization as we know it.
No I was there. And my college science class had the same policy. And it's still wrong. The fact is that passing your personal observations off as being the observations of a neutral and omnicient third party is a form of academic fraud, regardless of what the policy says.
How about filling their newspapers with informative and well written articles that don't contain glaring factual errors? It seems like almost every article on a subject I know something about has blatant factual errors in it.
How about publishing the news as it happens? It seems like most of the articles in the New York Times cover things I knew about a week earlier.
How about not using anonymous sources, or at the very least outing the sources if they are proved to have been lying?
How about not pretending there is such a thing as unbiased reporting? Saying "one is lead to believe" instead of "I believe" is just another form of lying.
Yeah I think everyone tried that when they were younger. It seems like such an obvious thing, except for that it breaks down so fast, esp when you get a zero in the sequence.
ahh true...well that still rules out 97 out of 100 possibilities. I.e. each number could potentially end with any of 10 digits, and same with the other number so that is 100 combinations. But we know that the only ending digits can now be 1&9, 3&3, or 7&7. 97% elimination rate ain't that bad.
VC stands for venture capitalist and Sequoia is the most famous silicon valley VC firm specializing in technology (Flatiron is probably the most famous east coast one).

Revver I've never heard of, but I'm not really into online video yet.
A few weeks ago I went to Startup School, a conference for hackers with entrepreneurial interests that was hosted by Paul Graham. I'd say 80% of the people there with laptops had macs. It was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen, to look back from the front of the room and see an entire roomful of Apple computers. I think Paul is right that most of the new Apple users aren't switchers, but rather are switch-backers. I for one am extremely happy with my powerbook that I bought two years ago, switching back from XP, so I don't think I will ever become a switch-back-backer. The amazing thing is that even though this computer 22 months old it feels brand new, rechargable battery issues aside. I have never had to reformat the hard drive, remove a virus, or uninstall any adware. I know that it is theoretically possible to get viruses on an Apple and there have been proof of concepts, but personally I don't give a damn about theory. All I care about is my last two years of "just works" computing.
I know at my Uni (Cornell) they pay kids good money to go sit out on the quad playing Xbox and PS2 to promote the latest games. It is something like 500 bucks for a day of playing video games, so all the undergrad business kids to compete to get the job. Talk about corporate whoring...
Your premiere spends six times as much money putting pictures of himself in the newspaper as he spends on SA's total economic development budget. You call this a decent government?
Back when I used to play video games I noticed that if I played before bed then I would actually dream in the graphics of the videogame sometimes. At first I would have dreams where I was in Ultima Online and someone was robbing my house, so I would wake up in a cold sweat and go to check on my character (who was macroing on the computer next to my bed).
The all time low was definitely when I got into nethack. You've never had a nightmare until you've had a nightmare in ASCII.
Moodle, far better than either of the above, is still free. As someone whose university uses Blackboard, I can honestly say it is the worst piece of commercial software I have ever used. Worse than Windows XP. Worse than windows ME. Worse than realplayer. Worse than CometCursor.
This is what Larry Sanger said in his last K5 article about Wikipedia. Larry made the argument that even though he has a PhD in philosophy his articles could be corrected by a six year old. Personally, I think that if your beliefs can't stand up to the curiosity of a six year old then that says something in and of itself.
I agree, Dr. Fun is definitely one of the all time greatest web comics. For those who have never read it, it is basically a (sometimes) dirty version of Far Side.
Because not wanting to fuck over others is a "social statement." Because not wanting to die from smog is a "social statement." Because using only your fair share is a "social statement."

What exactly are the benefits of digital TV anyway? I don't understand this HD TV and digital TV stuff, to me TV is good enough as is.
And just wait until Dick looks up all the stuff people have tagged with his name.
Ask and ye shall receive.

I knew that one of the factors ended in a 1 and the other ended in a 9 or that they both ended in 3. Am I eligible to split the prize?

Does that mean I have to commit ritual suicide now?
Despite the jingoistic title...

Zonk: Stop, stop, stop hating America.
