  1. I don't think that's the reason. on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

I really don't think disappointing sales on 18 can be blamed on the listeners, I think it should be blamed on Moby himself. I used to be a big Moby fan, but his last album, 7, just plain sucked. Sure there was maybe one or two good songs, but I don't want to get his newest one only to find out it's just as bad as his last one. I think that's what he should blame the sales on.

Also, I think Eminem is wrong. There are a lot of people that still listen to techno. I know I do.

Truthfully, I don't see where there's any new information here. Jurrassic Park III was out as a bootleg a week before it was out in theaters, as were a lot of other movies. The only reason that I can see that this made all the headlines is because (despite what people say) everybody is anticipating this movie and they think it will actually be a good movie. I'm not a hard-core Star Wars fan by any means, but from what I've heard one of the big reasons people didn't like Episode I (aside from Jar Jar, whom I really didn't have a problem with :) ) was that it didn't have enough battling. That looks like it's solved in Episode II.

A nice game to check out if you like small groups of units instead of the large ones with 10's of the same unit is Battle Realms. I just picked it up last week and I'm really impressed with it. One of the cool gameplay elements it adds that hasn't been in an rts before (i don't think...) is that instead of producing 5 different units from the same building (like the terran barracks) after you get the buildings later down in the tech tree, you actually have to train the lowest level warrior first and then train them at other buildings to get different (and more powerful) units.

I work at UPS in a suburb of Milwaukee and it's a sad fact that that's the way people treat the packages. I'm proud to say I don't work with the large boxes, so I wouldn't be handling that, but the people that do pay no regard to the contents of the packages, sometimes even throwing them (when they're forced to go faster as I mention below). If I had to blame someone, I don't know if I'd blame the employees or the management. The employees I work with are cautious for the most part, but the management works them as fast as possible. If there's a chance that we'd miss the time that our trucks have to leave they just tell us to go faster and don't care (much) about how you get there.

We're understaffed at our facility, so some people have to do the job of two and that doesn't make it any easier. It's really hard to process 5000 packages in 2 hours with 10 people (2 unloading the trucks, 1 pulling from the belt to a feeder (commonly known as a semi), 1 loading said feeder, 2 pulling/loading feeders, 1 loading a feeder, 1 sorting the packages that come down the belt, 1 person sorting the smalls (packages under 7 lbs) and 1 person putting those smalls into bags). That's 1 package every 15 seconds per person to sort it, load it, scan it and stack it in the feeder.

  9. I'm using MS Office for now on Is StarOffice Ready To Take On Office? · · Score: 1

I applaud Sun on its efforts on StarOffice, but at the moment it just doesn't meet my expectations. I'd been using StarOffice to get an opinion on both of the suites and MS Office came out on top for one reason: StarOffice attempts to be a complete desktop replacement with its desktop-like main window. It seems like it's too much for me. If I wanted a desktop replacement I'd go with lightstep or something like that, not StarOffice. It's that all-in-one design that I don't really like and it seems like StarOffice 5.2 is slower than Office 2000, so I'm going to stick with that for the time being.

  10. MS's .Net and Netscape on Netscape Backs Away From Browsers · · Score: 1

A friend and I were talking about Microsoft and AOL breaking off talks a little while back and he brought up a good point. This is one of the best things that AOL has done in awhile. With AOL breaking off talks, this means that IE may not be the browser used in future versions of AOL's software and that Netscape would surely be. This would kill off .Net at the head because all those AOL users wouldn't be able to access those sites because they'd be using Netscape, not IE. That fact alone would make web site developers hesitant to develop for the .Net platform because they'd be missing out on millions of users.
This is where Netscape becoming a portal comes in. What happens now that Netscape may not be developing a browser anymore? AOL may start using Mozilla, or it could stick with IE and then MS would basically control the internet. We'd be helpless to stop it because we'd be so dependant on it.

I took my younger brother to see Shrek last night (opening night, of course) and be both enjoyed it immensely. He's young enough to still laugh at the "9-year-old" jokes, but he's also old enough to laugh at the parodies (I especially like the Matrix parody and that sequence). I laughed through practically the whole movie because Meyers and Murphy just make a great team.

With everyone talking about the CGI (Awesome!) and everything it's hard to focus on anything else, but I thought the soundtrack deserves a mention, too. Ranging from Smashmouth (which fits in well) to The Monkees, I think it's also one of the best soundtracks for a movie I've seen in awhile. This does well for appeasing both the younger audience who likes the rock/pop sound to the older generations who enjoy some of the older sounds. This will be the first movie that I'll actually buy the soundtrack for instead of just talking about it.

  13. There are good reasons why cable use is soaring. on Cable Sprints, DSL Trudges, Free ISPs Pant · · Score: 2

As a user who's been on all sides of the fence, I can see why cable use is growing so rapidly. When I was using DSL all I had was problems. It wasn't connection problems as much as service problems. When I called for service, both of the ISPs that I had really had no clue what was going on most of the time. They'd end up blaming it on the last-mile provider, who in turn would blame it on the ISP and then the loop begins. The fact that there are usually 3 parties involved just gives more room for confusion.

With cable, however, I've had none of these problems (mainly because they have no one else to blame the troubles on). If I called support to see what was going on with the network they always had an answer and the service was back up within hours instead of days like my dsl.

When I first decided to get dsl for broadband I thought it'd be good because I had heard that ping times would be better and I'd get a constant download speed. I was really wrong. I'm getting faster downloads, faster uploads and faster pings on my cable than I ever got on my dsl. Now that I've got cable I'll never be going back to dsl.

When you say they have fast retrain, does that mean that all DSL connections get disconnected when someone makes a phone call? I wouldn't know about that because they used my 2nd phone line wire (no longer used) for my DSL and there was no voice on there, just the DSL.

Around June of last year I signed up for 416k SDSL from PSN and was happily downloading everything in sight until December 30th or so when my line went down. Later I found out that PSN would be going out of business on the 17th of January and they'd be migrating me over to Telocity. They gave me an estimate of about 7-10 days to migrate. It took them 3 months (during which I had no internet access at all). A week after they got my connection back Northpoint went out of business and their network went down. Telocity sent me an email telling me that I'd be serviced through Rhythms now and it would take around 3 weeks to migrate over. About 3 weeks after that email I got another email from Telocity telling me that they didn't have anyone that could be my last-mile provider. I promptly canceled my Telocity account and called Time Warner and signed up for Road Runner. They set it up the next morning and I've been going strong for a week or two now.

DSL was really a nice service and I wish I could've kept it. It's really getting killed by the distance limit. BTW, when is G.Lite supposed to be coming around? If I'm correct, that extends the distance that DSL can go and it'd make it cheaper to provide. That could really be DSL's savior.

Something that really gets me is the fact that the parents are going after the developers and publishers of the games. If I'm not mistaken, Games like Quake 3 and such have Mature ratings on them. If the blame should be pointed on anyone in the industry, it should be pointed at the people who _sell_ the games, or the people that buy the games for their underage kids.

    From the article:

"But money may be the smallest part of the goal," said John DeCamp, the Sanders' Nebraska-based attorney. "This is a class action that says that, ultimately, money ain't gonna do it."
I'm pretty sure money is a big part of it. They could be saying that just so the public doesn't get angry with them for trying to suck all the money possible out of this tragedy.

And on Friday, the family of injured student Evan Todd had their lawyer fire off a letter to the co-creator of the game "Doom" - a favorite of Harris and Klebold - asking that he stop selling adult games to kids.
Do the developers even have a say in who the games are sold to? I'm not sure about this so I can't comment on it, but if they don't why don't these people get their facts straight?
