    A previous poster mentioned an article that stated that he has has donated money to build a university building and a library. In naming the buildings, one was named after one of his teachers and the other after his mother.

    If his drive was for PR or personal fame, I doubt he would have neglected to place his name on those buildings.

    Then again, Nietzsche was still probably right. I just don't think that his motivation is what you think.

    The Silmarillion most definitely was not released by his son. In fact, I'm almost certain that most of the Silmarillion was finished before JRR started writing Lord of the Rings.

    You have it backwards.

    The Silmarillion was the main story that Tolkien was interested in. The Lord of the Rings was written at the request of the publisher for something to follow up The Hobbit.

    As anybody that has been running the beta of SP2 probably knows, this incredible application-breaking feature is ******OPTIONAL******* and can be ****TURNED OFF IF IT PRODUCES PROBLEMS****.

    Furthermore, it doesn't even work in non-Opteron processors.

    I mean, people are acting like upgrading to SP2 is going to suddenly destroy their ability to use applications when this option isn't even on by default.

    Certainly you people aren't this ignorant, are you?

    The data stream is running uncompressed at 75MB/s, which is 82 seconds of video for 6GB.

    Headphones tend to not go 'out of style.'

    The particular $300 headphones refered to before haven't really changed in the past several years, nor has their value depreciated.

    In fact, I know several people who have sold a pair are several years and lost little money on the transaction.

    The point was that it shouldn't be illegal to be black, nor should it be illegal to look at kiddy porn.

    Yeh, people always get that confused.

    I've had EEs tell me that normal high-voltage power lines are all DC. 0_o

    The interesting thing is that now that there are better methods for stepping up DC voltages to high levels, you're seeing more DC power lines.

    Generally, those lines are used to connect together various segments of the electrical grid that aren't properly wired together via normal high-voltage lines. Its a way to more easily transfer power to where it is needed and thus increase the overall efficiency of the grid. I'm often amazed the grid system works at all.

    Yeah, he may personally be less wealthy with the tariffs in place, but the US ends up collectively more wealthy.


    Except it doesn't. In this example, the Japanese competitive advantage in car production allows it to specialize in car production. As Americans buy the cheaper Japanese cars and American car production decreases, those jobs are redirected to other industries where America has a competitive advantage.

    Globalization = Regional Specialization based on regional competitive advantages

    = Increased consumption for ALL nations involved

    The thing is, the DSL ISPs don't hve high fixed costs. They just buy bandwidth and colocation space. The lines themselves are maintained by the telco.

    If anything, Speakeasy is screwing the Baby Bells to lure in more customers.

    Or, like anybody with half a brain cell, you could figure out that 'optical audio' is optical TOSLink.

    Optical TOSLink is not something that is rare to find into a standard computer. Most modern sound cards have either optical or coaxial digital outs, so why is it so hard to see that this is what Apple has included?

    Nuclear power stations generally require a nearby river or other source of large volumes of water. This is needed because nuclear power still relies on turbines powered by steam to produce electricity.

    Nuclear power in the desert won't work that great.

    I doubt lack of gravity would have that sort of effect.

    Cells are held together by the hydrophobicity of their phospholipid bilayers. This effect is not decreased by lack of gravity.

    He most likely didn't even know that many of those scenes were CG.

    Hate to nitpick, but -70mV is the resting membrane potential of the neuron. They don't fire at -70mV. Threshold for neuron firing is somewhere around -40mV if I remember correctly.
