Not about Linux in particular, but it concerns Microsoft so I guess its close enough.
Lie: Posted on Slashdot recently that Office 2003 does not export formatting information in its XML documents.
Truth: It does. I've been using it for weeks and while the XML is ugly (can you blame it?) it does contain all needed formatting information. Slashdot never even bothered to post a retraction.
What makes you think anybody in the music industry has that list?
If you were as observant as you were mindlessly paranoid, you would have noticed that the website wasn't run by anybody even close to the music industry.
They already have this: fibre channel and work over either fibre or copper.
The thing is, for short distances there is almost no reason to use fibre over copper. Ever notice that not many workstations have fibre gigabit ethernet? Its great for connecting two routers together that happen to be a mile apart, but over short distances it makes no sense.
To emulate the human brain, one must first understand how the human brain actually works. We know next to nothing about the framework that allows human consciousness. Sure, we know quite a bit about neurons and synapses and such, but we don't know how all of this comes together to form an object that can think.
Even with a massively powerful computer, one hundreds of times more powerful than the human brain, we would be unable to make that computer 'think' because we don't know what it MEANS to 'think.' And even if we did, there is the problem of programming that computer to emulate those brain processes in such a way that the computer can become conscious.
Overall, I don't see a computer being able to think for a long, long time.
Precisely, these sorts of 'pop science' articles are usually meant to elicit 'ooohs' and aaahs' from the common folk and perhaps in non-science professionals.
The scientific (as in, scientific method) definition of a theory is quite explicit. Perhaps one should consult something other than dictionary.com for a comprehensive explination of the scientific method and all of its constructs.
The second definition of theory you gave is simply the popular definition of a word. Or more specifically, the word was misused by so many people often enough that its definition was 'expanded.'
The point still remains that the word was misused in the original post. If you want to expand your knowledge, hop on Google and do a search for 'scientific method' and read up.
And why not wait another 4 months after the GeforceFX comes out and get an ATI 10700 Pro (Yes, I made that up...) that severely outclasses the GeforceFX?
People like you have been around for decades. Every time a new product comes out, they bring up waiting "just a few more months" until the Next Best Thing comes out.
People like you never actually buy anything because they end up waiting "just a few more months" for several years.
Nevermind the fact that people have been waiting for the GeforceFX for how many months now. Wait, wasn't it supposed to be released in December? Yeh, right. Shortly after the 9700 came out, plenty of people said "wait a few months, the FX is right around the corner."
Funny thing is, the people that bought a 9700 Pro will have had the fasted gaming card for around 6-7 months before the GeforceFX comes out. And we don't even know how good the GeforceFX is going to be!
As for no new gaming 'demanding' this card, I don't think you have tried playing many current games at 1600x1200 with 16xAnsio and FSAA.
Here's some good computer buying advice: Decide when you want to buy a new computer. When that day comes, buy the best that you can get for your money. Then sit back and be happy.
As you'll start to notice, 99% of reviews are spread over billions of pages and generally consist of cut-and-paste descriptions.
Any actual analysis is so horrible and incomplete as to make the review worthless. Very fiew hardware review sites do an actual good job of doing hardware reviews. Storagereview I view as the best. Too bad they only do hard drives!
For other stuff, skip right to the Arstechnica hardware forums. Best place there is for mildly biased hardware discussion.
What most people don't understand is how utterly horrible Plasma televisions are from a technological standpoint.
First. there is the insane problem with burn-in with plasma displays. Plasmas burn in faster than any other display technology. In fact, there is much discussion on the problems that static logos (displayed in the corners of most televisions stations) cause with plasmas. For the same reason, it is absolutely impossible to use a plasma as a computer monitor unless you really want your desktop image, start bar, etc. burned onto the display. Nor is gaming all that favorable considering that most games have at least some static imaging that will cause burn-in if used for any period of time.
Cost is another factor that is horrible with plasmas. Unless you want to spend multiple tens of thousands of dollars, you are not going to find a plasma with HDTV resolutions. Most of these low-end plasmas max out at 800ish pixels width. Seriously, why would anybody spend that much money on a display that can't handle HDTV?
And anybody that has actually compared display technologies knows that plasmas are known for having horrible blacks. You will never find a plasma that can display black as anything other than a shade of grey. That is not acceptable.
The only thing plasma has going for it is 'drool appeal' and thickness.
For a lot less money you can get a DLP projector that: a) Is much cheaper. b) Has much higher resolutions, up to HDTV resolution. c) Is thinner. (Can your plasma roll up?) d) Doesn't suffer from burn-in. e) Has much better contrast.
Why would anybody buy a plasma if they actually did ANY research at all into projection systems? And don't tell me replacing projector bulbs is the reason. The money you save buying a projector over a plasma will pay for many decades of bulbs.

The point was made SEVERAL times in the book that the Ents were slow to anger but once they all decided on something and got pissed off enough, there was nothing that could stop them. In fact, the 'slow to anger' idea was one of the primary focuses of the Ent gathering chapter. It had some of the most descriptive language in the book. Great chapter!
They were indeed a fucking nasty fighting force in the books and did kick some major ass.

You do realise that Sony is a mid- to low-end home electronics manufacturer, right?
What makes you think anybody in the music industry has that list?

If there was ever a post worthy of a +7, this is it.
The poster was refering to the general inefficiency of all animals, not just cows.

People can't eat or drink biodiesel.
Unless you decide to legislate a vegetarian diet, people are going to continue to eat meat, drink milk, and wear wool.
Actually, Eugenics programs started in the United Stated and culminated with the forced sterilization laws found in many areas.
The Nazis got the idea from Americans.
That's complete bullshit.
Perhaps you are confusing the 9700 Pro and GeforceFX?
The 9700 Pro has been available for at least 4 months, and I'm sure it was available before then and I just didn't notice.
Hardware is the least of our worries.

The funny thing about the scientific method is that it can't PROVE anything, per se.
Science can only disprove.
At least use the correct scientific definition of 'theory.'
A theory is not a hypothesis. A theory is not just an idea.
Most excess CO2 is buffered by the oceans via carbonic acid.
nVidia still doesn't seem to plan on producting a card capable of outputting HDTV.
For some months now ATI has had a cheap Component breakout cable available that can output 1080i/720p/480p/480i.
For the rabid HTPC person, there really is no way to compareATI and nVidia. ATI seems to be the only one to support home theatre applications.

The page was more of a critique of the silly murder rule they have in that state.
Under most any other state law, the girl would not have gotten life without parole. There was no intent, which would prevent 1st degree murder.
Nowhere in the page was it argued that she shouldn't have gotten prison time.
