Personally I think it would be better spent if invested in medical research and to better the relationships with other countries
You think we can just give mean people a lollipop and they will start to like us?
Don't you understand? They hate us and our Western lollipops. We put Victoria's Secret on TV and it makes them want to kill us.
Our most basic values are incompatible with the people who hate us the most. Find a way to bridge that gap and you'll be more famous than that Jebus guy.
XBMC may be open source, but the only tools which can compile it are Microsoft's, and they are not for distribution. So we have a situation where there is a cool open source app which can only be built by pirating a compiler, or by getting binaries from someone else with a pirated compiler.
Getting the binaries is not difficult for the kind of geek who is likely to open up their Xbox, but Joe Average will have a rude shock awaiting him if he buys a chipped Xbox and tries to put XBMC on it.
That all said, XBMC is in fact dah bomb and I use it daily.

Thank you for having the courage to share that bit of self-realization.
I hate weblogs. "Woke up. Had toast. Toast is good." Why is this considered a revolution in communications? Whoo, now people in Upper Volta can know what I had for breakfast. Power to the people!!
Moblogging? "Look at this gum on the sidewalk. It kind of looks like a clown. Or a horse." Jebus, that kind of drivel makes me want to shoot myself right in the snapper.
But color me a hypocrite. I have a weblog. But I only use it to post "look at this good software I found" type information... things that I have reason to believe will be actually *useful* to some other people.
Bloggers -- if you don't have anything interesting to say... well, you know the rest.
That never before have I read a/. story that had so many people upset, yet had so little meaning for me. OK, it sucks to be laid off, it just happened to me, and on that level the story is interesting and I can sympathize... but... some people are saying that TechTV is their favorite channel? That the Screen Savers is the best show on TV? That they will cancel their cable if there is no TTV?
Are these people nutz or have I somehow missed a revolution in geek programming? Cuz when I have seen TTV it has been the cure for insomnia. Yes, even the Screen Savers.
At first I thought I worked with you because I was a level designer on a game with serious, serious problems like you were talking about. We ALSO had snoop and salary leak incident. But our game came out (despite a number of us quitting along the way due to our unbearable management).
Ah, the game industry. I just got laid off (thanx Microsoft), maybe I will go dig ditches for a change.
I already read eBooks on my PDA, so like you said, the price better be right.
These things better have great software too... Right now, I can read PDB, TXT, RTF, HTML all without screwing around with converter software. (Thanks uBook) If these things require special proprietary formats, count me out -- even if they give you a converter.
Look, I can respect people who don't have a TV, and don't like TV, that's all fine. But blanket condemnations of all televised content are SILLY. (I can't tell if this is your position or not, but I had to vent anyway.)
Teevee is a means by which people can make stuff for you to watch. If you are going to univerally condemn all of their efforts, then you better be prepared to write off all books, movies, music, musical theater, circuses and video games too.
The quality of stuff on TV varies greatly, but at the far end of the bell curve there is some fine entertainment. Even some educational stuff! It may not be your cup of tea, but don't dismiss the people who enjoy it. It's not all "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper."
From reading the article it looks like you can have Qwest DSL without Qwest voice service... but I don't know how they'll react to you wanting to drop their voice service and use a DIFFERENT DSL provider.
I'm going to give it a couple of weeks so the phone drones get their stories straight and give it a try though. If i could have JUST Speakeasy DSL and no land line phone at all... that would be the best.
"Diabetics who are unaware of their condition or not under good control can have acetone in their breath which could register as alcohol."
People on low-carb diets can have acetone in their breath too. I am on one of those diets and I just plain STINK right now. Good thing I was recently laid off, I don't have to be around anyone!
Use that $7k towards a HOUSE down payment, and get the hell out of your apartment. The satisfaction and quality of investment you get from owning a house will be a lot better than the grief you get from trying to be a nice guy.
In fact, a quote like this: "Virus experts suggested MyDoom's author was a fan of the Linux open source community..." can be damaging to getting Linux and OSS recognized in a good light.
The guy who shot Reagan did it to impress Jodie Foster, yet somehow she didn't get the blame. In the unlikely event I get into a conversation about this email virus I'll have to point that out.
There has been NO terrorist activity in the U.S. since 9/11. Nothing observable maybe... who knows how many plots may have been foiled though? The feds can't brag about every bust because that compromises their intelligence sources.
Just because you haven't seen news doesn't mean that there isn't activity.
it sickens me that republicans have turned it into an excuse to create a police state Like that other party would have done any different? Puh-leez. Next you'll be saying that the GOP is trying to starve old people and burn black churches, too.
I do not dispute that this isn't a fantastic time in history but you can't assume it would be so much better under a Dem administration.

so likely the media will be over built to support error correction, like laser disks were.
The video signal on a 12" laserdisc was actually analog.
Audio began as analog too but later CD-style bits were added to the discs. I have no idea what kind of error correction this used though.
That salad shit blew my fucking mind.

Relativity is bullcrap.
I heard so on Coast to Coast AM.
I think it was right after the chupacabra guy the other night. Or was it the bigfoot guy? I can't remember.
Anyway, that settles it. Anyone who says otherwise is a tool of the Establishment!
Now if you will excuse me, I am getting into my orgone box.

Basically, we have two camps: the DVD Forum, and the DVD+RW Alliance (The Forum and The Alliance as I like to call them)
I hear that next season the Forum will join up with the Covenant, and Sark will be running both of them.
But I wonder how long the time lag will be between the probe finding life, and a leak in the radioactive heater wiping all of it out.
Much in the same way that Chernobyl wiped out all life on Earth.
Oh, wait. We're still here.

I'll create a db of my family's personal information, get a copyright paper trail, and C&D anyone who includes my db in THEIR db!
It really is not set up for a GUI, and you will do a ton of work getting it there.
yeah, "make install" just about killed me. and I can never remember that "startx" thing you have to do.

oh crap, I always knew there was something weird about the guys with the BLUE badges!
Where's the art? I'm sure that there are lots of people who would argue that graffiti is not art...
... but I feel that it's a valid form of subversive social commentary.
I'm one of them. Let's see what tune you are whistling when someone tags your HOUSE.
Where's the "social commentary" in writing your name on something? It still sounds like hooliganism to me.
Why isn't smashing windows or slashing tires valid social commentary too?

imho, the web interface to mythtv makes it more useful than any other PVR solution...
There is a web interface for ReplayTV too.
I'd just make it illegal to do anything illegal. Problem solved!
Last time I checked, the RIAA did not have police powers.
I guess you better check again, Chester!

Lazy f'ing students should be studying instead of chatting on AIM anyway!
