    I always love it when someone is down they complain about the very thing they were doing when they were on top.

    Global Warming is a perfect example
    Several studies that I have seen quoted (on both sides) have faked their numbers when their models did not show what they wanted. Some have later been busted on it.
    Yet people that are not climatologists keep quoting the worthless studies as if they meant something. Now I don't care what side you come down on unless you are six years old you know both side have faked their studies.

    Another perfect example is when one side starts complaining about non-partisan work by congress. You know they think they are going to loose whatever the issue is.

    And as several people have pointed out they take the money fast enough.

    Nor does it prove that it is harmful.
    That works both directions in this example.

    If parents were responsible enough to actually SPEND TIME WITH THE KIDS THEY MADE
    it would not be an issue in the first place. I for one would love to see a study done that shows how many of the kids that they say were affected by porn had ANY time just playing with there parents. As opposed to getting pushed out the door in the morning and not let back in until just before dinner time. Or given electronic devices to keep the kid out of there hair. Patting a kid on the head when you go by for more chips or beer does not count as parenting time.

    This when the surpreme court has just finshed "reinterperting" that to say that if someone tells the government they will pay more taxes on your property then you do they will take it away from you. No choice no appeal.

    IF Linux is as stable as you make out, and you want "nothing more...ever", then why not make it - or Windows for that matter - available as a chipset, like the good ol' BBC Microcompuetr of yesteryear...?

    Because like any operating system you will eventually want to add something to the machine like a newer video card.... Or a new codex and then what happens when you turn off the machine? But even three seconds of thought would have told you that.
    Eventually you (gasp) might even want to try a new distro....
    For crying out loud talk about vendor lock...

    That would prove nothing as Unix OS's don't have near the Desktop marketshare of Windows, not do they have the same type of userbase.

    Bull if that tired old BS was true then would you care to compare IIS to Apache?
    Using the same criteria of course. Apache the market giant VS IIS the positions are almost reversed. But once again MS winds up with the lions share of the remote root exploits. Now how does that figure with the claim that market share = number of exploits?

    If you think email is private I got news for you.
    It is not even legally private let alone easy to look at. It is trivial to read it "in transit" with a sniffer and not all that hard to get it from a server with the right privs...

    So to answer you question, no one is.
    But you have not lost any levels of privacy at all. If you are encrypting it then you have nothing to worry about as only the government can crack it. oh wait a minute............

    To a point you are right. The police do have a degree of protection for being stupid. However before you say that a cop need not worry about being held responsible for arresting someone for something stupid, remember what happened to the cop that arrested someone for brewing beer in his own home. At the time beer brewing was not common. They got a report that someone was growing pot in his home. They did a no knock entry pined him on the ground and tore his house apart. At first I was wondering why he was laughing. It seemed to get the cops mad. Then they showed the "pot" plants in close up in the camera. They were hop plants. His setup looked expensive. The cop shoved one in his face and said something bright like "we got you now". Or something like that and the guy about pissed his pants. The last clip from the "bust" was a cop carrying out a 5gal carboy saying he could have made someone go blind with this.... The poor guy that got arrested is not so poor now. And the CO tax payer ended up giving him a fortune. All because a cop thought a still was a 5 gallon carboy with an air lock on it.

    So yes the guy can sue and he would probably win.

    Except that most residential ISP are blocking incoming 25 now. So for most of the Cable Modem users out there will never see any of this. And the repeated sends would get the IP of this new gizmo black holed in a heart beat. Net effect 0

    Interesting I just tried it from Fedora with KDEs Konqueror browser and it failed. I got Http:// could not be found.

    But now imagine being able to get all your informational services from the same company.
    (Most people have cold shivers running up and down their spine at this point.) To be fair I have never dealt with Verizon. But they seem to be thinking that they can put the fiber in and get triple use out of the lines. Sell people Land line service high speed Internet access and Digital TV access through the same connection. And then bundle it together with their cell phone service cheaper then you can get it
    anywhere else. If they can pull it off they will have a monopoly of informational services that will make the bells at their greatest look tiny.
    You know what I think it will work.

    Heh cable companies have bad manners when it comes to burying cable as well. Some people have even been mad enough to run over the cable with the lawn mower. :) I think they hope it would encourage the companys to bury their cables faster. Mostly (that I have seen) it is caused by loose policies with 3ed party contractors that cause long wait times for cable buries. The loose policy are of course to save money. And as usual the customer pays... In many smaller areas the contractor is the same person or company.
    Sorry to hear about your bad experience though.

    Fine granted, I do work for a cable company for the moment. However I can put my finger in the wind and see the direction it is blowing. And the first company that gets fiber to the door will win. End of story.

    Well I only know the rules that go in the company I work for. Two hour appointments for repair and installing service. And what is it people say about stereotypes again?

    BTW as far as what other people think about phone companies..... go to dlsreports or google for fa moment or so and you can meet as many people that think you are wrong. And a case in point how many accountants make a living recovering money from overcharges from cable companys? Like the ones that make 10% on the recovered money from the phone company's.

    Now don't get me wrong cable company's are not saints. They mess things up as well. But that bad? (shrug) Well lets say plenty of people see it otherwise.

    Ok get it straight I am not a cable company. I wish I was. I like money. I do however have my own opinions. Irregardless who I consult for.
    Consulting clients are not that hard to come by.
    I can go down a list of things that one is doing wrong. It would end up as long as my arm. But I was making a wise crack about phone companies.
    Before you started jumping to conclusions. But by all means jump away.

    Incorrect on two counts.
    Cable company's ARE being forced to guarantee uptime for phones as a life line service. And it has been explained to me that their will be hell to pay if the minimum uptime is not met.

    Next if you don't get things spelled out in the T&C's in writing why would you be surprised if they are not met?

    But that would be wrong.

    I work for a large cable company and we are adding VOIP to our line up as fast as we can provide the guaranteed up times mandated by the government. Like 99.99 uptime and independent power supply and such. And yes if your ticked at the cable company you can call the P.U.C

    The funny thing is that so many people hate the phone companies so bad they will snap up the service as fast as it is available. The growth has to be slow to keep the network growing in front of the wave of people who hate phone companies bad enough to do nearly anything to get away from them.
    They did it to themselves. Bad customer service is legendary with phone companies.

    That depends with my cable company a unknown MAC is allowed to be up and running for three days...
    Think about it for a moment.

    Almost everything is tied to the MAC of the modem.
    There is some debate IF they could identify you with a forged MAC maybe the three block radius but the account? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the system you are in and for my company they could not find you.

    Just a little bit of a problem there
    you need an atmosphere first to grow anything.
    You would have to spend a generation pushing asteroids into mars to increase the gravity enough to actually hold on to an atmosphere first.
