Really...so a week or so ago when that police officer pulled me over to tell me my lights weren't on, I should have been far more confrontational instead of having that nice chat we had about how beautiful Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is during their Winter Festival.
It's been my experience that most police officers are nice people that have to deal with the occasional asshole who automatically assumes he is being hassled and wrongfully claims he has never done anything wrong in his entire life, or feels that the police officers should have something better to do than to pull them over for going 15 mph over the speed limit since he can drive safely at that speed.
Well.. the asshole is usually partially correct, police officers do have something better to do than traffic stops. And if said asshole would follow the speed limit or not run red lights or not do illegal lane changes that endanger other people, then the nice police officer could get right to those more important things.
That's quite a leap. I haven't suffered from the current economic downturn, even though my house and retirement plans have both lost value. In fact, most people still work every day, and unless they cashed out their retirement plans or walked away from their home haven't really lost anything. Many people did just fine during the depression with government support. I have a friend whose father ran a bakery. When times got tough, he started taking items in trade and stored them in a warehouse. When the depression was over, he turned around and started to sell them and got rich. I had several older friends that survived the depression just fine by not panicking. Smart people who didn't turn to the government for help.
So..exactly what government support was needed? Please explain how taking $100 from my pocket and giving it to someone who is not working 'stimulates' the economy when I could have hired someone to do yard work with that same money. And they would have gotten the entire $100 instead of the cut after the bureaucrats are paid. The only jobs taxation creates are government jobs, and other than emergency personnel, teachers, and the military, no Dept. of Anything did anything that was productive or improved the economy. They only create regulations which create additional burdens on business and drive up prices. I will only grant that some of the research and studies that come out and become public knowledge are often worthwhile.
The government can neither stimulate the economy nor create long term jobs through taxation and regulation. They can only soften the lows and the expense of reducing the highs later. At the expense of stealing my money that I have worked for. They rob Peter to give to Paul, and get nothing out of the transaction other than a vote. I have yet to see any study which shows CAUSATION of this, only correlations.
At least the accordion player downtown provides me some entertainment value when I choose to put $5 in his case. Taxing me $5 provides no entertainment value at all.
It will need 4gb of memory, a 4 core CPU for compiling and creating movies and photo editing (all at the same time if I want to), a couple TB of disk space, and a video output that supports multiple monitors.
Do you know of a phone that supports that? Or even an affordable laptop???
Desktop workstations are the cheapest forms for this AND the most ergonomic. It is cheaper to have a desktop with plenty of work space at my job and home and a phone that can transfer or unlock access to data than it is to create a phone with all of the above AND a usable battery life.
Maybe someday with 100MB WiFi type connectivity is available, it will be possible. But until then, the phone should be the accessory, not the desktop.
Virtualization of the desktop might make the storage and cost requirements less, I work from home by remoting into my work desktop. But my company frowns on my storing my video collection, personal music and photos, PC games, and doing personal contract work on their computer equipment, so I still need one at home also.
Please mod up!!! If I need a full size monitor and keyboard in order to work 8 hours, I'd rather have a 'desktop' to begin with. My setup has two monitors, and a REAL keyboard and mouse, not the toy ones on most laptops, and I can't even begin to imagine the carpel tunnel and thumb pain that would skyrocket if iPads and such became work devices for people who type and use a mouse all day long, like developers and admins.
The era of the PC can't be over anyway, the mainframe era hasn't ended yet.....
Taking photos of lightening at night is very doable using this method. But not when you are trying to take some of the most beautiful lighting pictures... which occur during the day. Using your reflexes to time shutter open/close is more luck than skill.
Even at night, depending on the dSLR camera, the amount of time it takes for the camera to process a bulb setting and store the image can introduce long delays between shots, and missed opportunities. Bulb settings increase the noise in a shot the longer the shutter is open. Turning off the camera noise processor and doing it in Photoshop reduces in-camera processing time significantly, but it can introduce odd bits of color scattered around the photograph that require touchup.
That's why they sell lightening triggers that use the lightening flash itself to trigger the shutter. Camera lag is an issue, but not with the higher end cameras.
I only use the nighttime long-exposure method as the lightening triggers are a little pricey for my taste.
We use whiteboards, email, MS Word, and Visio
Works fine for a company of 30 people with a development staff of two people. And after being in large shops with all the BS you have to do to get something done, I'll continue to forgo the 15% higher paychecks and enjoy the quality of my job instead. Hourly, I'm probably making the same. Per line of code completed, probably more.
What soooo many people get caught up in is the 'my app is better than your app' syndrome.
Who cares if another app that does the same thing as this app is better?? As long as my app or phone does what I want it to do, it's good enough.
For instance, I don't need the 'best' computer at home. For one, I would never use all of it's functions, so it's a waste of money. Secondly, 'best' is only able to be determined if there is a set of measurable criteria, and the criteria for 'best' is different for every person, other than simple things like 'can I make a phone call'.
So, what Wozniak is really saying is that his iPhone is the best FOR HIM!!!!
I have an HTC Android phone, which I got after playing with my daughter's iPhone and seeing how Apple treated it's customer base. I felt it was the 'best' for me.
And after looking at my phone and my daughter's iPhone, my wife decided the best for for her was the HTC also. As have the majority of people in our office of young, bright, financial analysts... except for one lone iPhone user.
Unless Wozniak is willing to publish his criteria for 'best', his opinion is no better than anyone else.
I've already consolidated all of this.. into email or IM onto my phone! Whenever I get any sort of message on several platforms, I get sent an email and both my desktop client and phone suck it all done so I can read it. The emails contain links so I can reply if it was on a message board somewhere.
That includes voicemail.....Vonage has had voicemail transcription for years. I can read it or listen to it, and then call that person back if I choose to.
So..what's the problem that facebook is trying to solve.. beyond lining their own pockets with more advertising dollars, and filing their database with more data to mine.
My thoughts exactly.....I've had Beatles on my MP3 player for years. What a non-newsworthy item that iTunes has something that millions of others have had for decades.
When someone is in charge of something, they figure out what the hell is going on before making a public statement. When someone is in charge of something, they don't whine like a baby.
People who publicly whine about things they are in charge of have no business being in charge of anything. People who take action and get things done, then accept responsibility for the outcome should be in charge. No matter what the reason, it is ALWAYS the fault of the person at the top of the pile. Not any predecessor or the people under them.
Real leaders take responsibility and drive forward.
I have taken jobs without knowing the full extent of the work involved. And I SHUT THE FUCK UP until I understood the full extent of what needed to be done. Then found ways to get things taken care of that didn't humiliate or blame past staff members.
Publicly whining makes someone look weak, and it doesn't take long for people to lose their respect for the person in charge. If the director/moron had stood up and said that he was going to investigate the system to make sure it is being used effectively and left it at that, it would have been enough. Making accusations about something HE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT is a sign of insecurity.
As for auditing, the committee members are also IN CONGRESS WHICH APPROPRIATES THE MONEY!!!! Jeez... if she can't audit and then convince congress they are spending too much money and to not approve it, then THEY AREN'T DOING THEIR JOB!!!!!
Just another example of the "it's not my fault" mentality that has overspread our country.
When the director doesn't know what he is directing, and the chairperson can't control it, they need to find new jobs. Makes no difference whether Feinstein wants to raise or lower it, she can't do an effective job when she complains about the direction it is going and can't/won't do anything about it.
People in charge who whine about things aren't leading. People in charge who take responsibility and get things done... are.
Thanks for posting this. Now we now that Diane Feinstein has no business being on this committee and that James R. Clapper Jr. isn't doing his job either.
Android provides choice. There are many different models out there, some with keyboards, some with fancy organic screens, all kinds of features.
With iPhone, your choices are.... how much memory do you want. Wow.. thanks for understanding exactly what I want in a phone Steve. But your ESP is off, I like using memory cards and having accessible batteries and keyboards.
The rest of the crap you talked about being the 'strength' of Apple doesn't mean diddly squat. My HTC phone worked out of the box, always has. It has never frozen up. I've never been 'confused' about apps.
And I like sorting out all the different phone options.
You mean specific purpose computers that are environment hardened to withstand the abuse that a young child can render carrying it around day in and day out?? I've been around kids and young adults with communicator devices, and there is no way an iPad would stand up to the abuse these folks give their communicators. One of the young adults had bruises on her hips from dancing with her communicator around her neck.
It's a 'nice thought' handing out iPads. Now go check out the prices for hardened tablets and get back to me on what the real costs would be for a general purpose device that performs as well as the special purpose devices you rail against.
Sierra Club, NRA, AFL-CIO, and AARP are all lobbyists. Lobbyists are on both sides of all discussions. They are the EXPERTS. It is not possible for Congress to understand everything, lobbyists are the experts on subjects that members of Congress are supposed to use to understand issues. They have NOTHING to do with keeping any congressman or senator in office except through regulated, transparent campaign donations. People whine about how much lobby group A gives to a senator, but they usually fail to mention how much the lobbyists B is giving to his opponent. Like it's OK for the Sierra Club to donate, but not the oil companies.
Congress is only a problem when they do things for lobbyists for favors. We can't have the Sierra Club talking to Congressmen if we don't allow the oil companies to do it too. We can't have the NRA talking with Congress if we don't allow the anti-gun lobby to do it also.
I agree with the concept of your post, but I think it bears some further exploring.
It seems to me that religion is about controlling what people think and do for the 'good of all'. For the most part, all religions do not encourage 'thinkers', only 'followers'. (One notable exception is Judaism which encourages study and questions from what I've been told). It is a means for explaining complex concepts to uneducated people. 'God created the universe through some magical process, you don't need to worry about the details. And don't have sex with your sister or you will go to hell.' No need to teach the unwashed masses anything about astronomy or genetics. Out of this, you get uneducated people who will do as they are told because some guy in Europe with a pointy hat (or some guy in the South wearing a bad suit on TV) said god works through him. While notable religious figures created great advancements in science, it should be noted that historically, 90% or more of the entire population professes some religious belief. So stating that religion has been responsible for scientific advances is a bit of a misuse of statistics.
Science is about thinking and learning and questioning everything, including established theories. Nothing is sacred. But the unwashed masses have to be educated in order to understand the simplest of ideas. Such as 'If you have sex with your siblings, it is far more likely that a bad genetic combination will occur and your children will be malformed. Now.. let me explain how DNA works...' And once the masses become knowledgeable, they tend to question everything and it is no longer as easy to get them to to do what those in power want them to do. 'Universal health care?? Wait.. those numbers don't seem right. Can you please provide the details behind them so we can verify your conclusions.'
While they might have basic core questions in common, their methods for answering them are completely different and have nothing in common. Religion says 'believe this because it is god's will', and science says 'I think this happens... can you check it for me'.
Religion IS a silly vestige of prehistoric mythologizing. The world will be a better place when it is gone. Fortunately, more and more people are turning away from organized religion and are merely 'spiritual'. Once organized religion falls, it is only a matter of time until god joins Santa Claus in the list of stories to tell to make children behave.
The fact someone believes there are neutral news sources is part of the problem. Every reporter in existence colors their 'facts' with their beliefs, rejecting or providing facts based on their personal concept of 'accuracy'. Editors help, but they can't add missing data if they don't know about it.
Blogging has been going on since paper and the printing press became fairly common. And political parties influencing it has been going on all along. If someone can't figure out that a blog is prejudiced one way or another, they have a problem. Ben Franklin used to write under a pseudonym to try and convince people that someone other than he had an opinion about something, hoping it would lend more credence to the discussion.
When one assumes neutrality of any given media, that is when they have joined the herd.
And when I write a Craig's list ad I use psychological tricks to get people to think my car is a better deal than some other car. I once sold a car for $200 more than my minimum acceptable offer, is that morally dubious also??? Before I got married, I would modify my behavior so girls wouldn't think I was a geek that enjoyed playing Counterstrike for hours so I would have a better chance of getting a date. Unless she was a geek too....then my geekiness was allowed to roam free. (My wife loves having a geek/home handyman as a husband because nothing in our house stays broken for very long.)
That is how life works -- get over it. It's only morally dubious to those that get caught up in it and want to play 'victim'. To the rest of us, it's fucking great!!!!
Millions of the kids prior to the 80s were never properly diagnosed with ADHD, were never put on drugs, and managed to get through life and become adults. Wasn't easy, but they and their parents managed.
Imagine that.. sometimes drug aren't the only answer.
I seem to recall him stating something along the lines that 'if those that criticize me aren't going to help, then I'll just publish whatever I want to'.
I still feel his only concern is his public image and how much attention he gets. When he starts to publish documents that show how many civilians have died because Taliban and others house themselves with civilians and refuse to conform to anything in the Geneva Convention, then we will know he doesn't have an agenda to push and is truly a whistle blower.
When I see those documents, I'll reconsider. Until then, I think he is just another asshole with an agenda and really doesn't deserve the attention the media gives him.
A whistle blower would go through the data and make a something that at least resembles a case. He doesn't want to do any real work, like analyze the data, strip out names to protect innocent parties, or provide only truly relevant data. Instead, he prefers to vomit data and let other people make sense of it.
Assange suffers from attention deficit disorder.. he gets upset when he isn't getting enough attention.
I said almost EVERY skinny person driving a car. I guess reading comprehension isn't one of our strong suits. Or else you are self-absorbed and think everything everyone writes is about you. Or are just very self-righteous.
Or maybe the lack of eating enough is affecting your ability to focus. Go have a snickers....
I ride a 600 pound motorcycle, so I use less gas than almost EVERY skinny person that drives their car to work alone. And I get to use the HOV lane, which means I'm not in stop-and-go traffic as often.
Really...so a week or so ago when that police officer pulled me over to tell me my lights weren't on, I should have been far more confrontational instead of having that nice chat we had about how beautiful Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is during their Winter Festival.
