I'd argue that this is due to tangible assets.

I.e. that a tech company doesn't need much - just rented office space, a few computers and a payroll. If they go bust, there's nothing to sell (maybe some IP?)

A manafacturing company however may own machinery, premises, raw materials and finished products.

the only true MMOFPS i know of.

Even though it's for sale, it still feels like beta. they keep evolving and tweaking the rules.

    Pros:

    1) 200 player battles are not uncommon.
    2) three empires with specific weapons
    3) not as bandwidth hungry as BF1942
    4) Air vehicles, tanks, buggies, atv's
    5) character development means that newbies can drive most powerfull tanks etc, but not be as flexible as developed players (who can drive those, and also maybe planes and be snipers)
    6) Flying mini-mechs (if you play VS like I do)

    Cons:

    1) 15 dollar monthly sub
    2) need monster Memory ,CPU and GFx card
    3) Some balance issues with weapons
    4) No way to "win" - the battles keep on going forever

It's a Science Fiction world. Lots of nano stuff to explain the fact you can respawn.

It's basically a nylon wing that stays rigid because of forward motion. Air is "Rammed" into the front, which makes the wing inflate, which in turn instead of just falling glides forward. This means it stays inflated.

If you look at the picture, you can see the dude has two handles. These allow him to pull down on the tail of the parachute, and change the shape of the parachute, changing the angle of attack. Pulling the left one makes it turn left, because the right side is now in a steeper dive than the left is. Pulling the right one makes it turn right and pulling both flares the canopy, so that just before you hit the ground you can make it plane out and go that bit more horizontal (whilst losing speed - so it's possible to stall the parachute)

How much do you think the Crack costs to produce?
How much do the imported raw materials cost?
Then consider the percentage profit that each indivdiual, from the importer, to dealer slaps on it....!

so.. I'm making this up off my head. But let's say that an ounce of pure cocaine costs less than a buck in Columbia. By the time it hits the streets, cut by 100, at $10-$15 per hit, you're looking at $1500 for the same ounce. A big
commercial firm could put the same ounce out, in better purity, for $5.00 per hit, thus charging an exorbitant markup, but still undercutting your corner pusher.

Think about that for the cost of a handgun.
I'm guessing here, but let's say you could knock out a gun in some country for $50.

Using the example of the crack cocaine, then that's a cost of 75000 dollars...

okay. so that proves my numbers are way off, but it illustrates my point, I hope. Handguns would be too expensive for the average small - time criminal.

Also in reply to the poster above (about constructing guns from pipes and stuff) - it would be possible, but you'd end up with an unreliable one shot ( or perhaps a derringer). Which would also cost a fair whack because someone with some skills would have to take at least a few hours to make it. Nobody could hand-make a weapon to the tolerances needed for an automatic.

in that case, it's more reliable to fall back on a knife. -- Of course, with a knife you have to get near your target.

  21. Re:Hrmm on Build Your Own Gauss Pistol · · Score: 1

Okay. Here's my logic. Follow it if you will.

If a country has a ban on handguns, then it will be impossible to law-abiding citizens to obtain them.

By the same measure, it will be very difficult for the average street hoodlum to get a handgun. The weapon either has to be specially manafactured, or imported - both expensive and risky.

Sure, a criminal who has the resources can buy a black market imported weapon, but that is expensive. puts it out of reach of many. Therefore there is less "casual" gun crime where people are shot.

of course, this cannot be applied to the US, because of the massive stockpiles of weapons that exist.

If guns are banned, but there are sufficent stockpiles to make them cheap to own, then legitimate citizens have no defense.

    it's a vicious circle.

I remember reading this sort of idea in a Berserker Novel, by Saberhagen.

As I recall, the Berserkers (think alien terminator endoskeletons, built for a war that ended eons ago, but now trying to exterminate mankind) had captured a space ship.

So the captain had to destroy the galactic encyclopedia, so the Berserkers couldn't find any human planets.

However, he was stopped by one of the passengers, because the passenger was one of the authors of said encyclopedia.
As an anti-piracy measure, fake "honeyplanets" had been added to the encylopedia, so if anyone brought out their own version, the authors could point out the fictious planet.

Of course, this fooled the machines and everyone was happy in the end. ... the point is, people do this all the time anyway, with existing data (i.e books) , so they can find who plagurises them.....
