I run several flavors of Linux and use Firefox on all distros. I have a Comcast fiberoptic cable connection that averages 4.2 megabytes per second and have no difficulties or conflicts at all. Further no tweaking has been applied. Things are running just as they were originally installed. I use mostly Debian derived distros.
Information needs to be free of restraints. We should all be free to study each other in depth. Above all we need to be able to study our government to the same depth that it is allowed to study us. Obviously people who do unpopular things will probably suffer the expected consequences. But those who do wonderful things will gain even more respect. With enough surveillance we may even be able to keep our cars and bicycles from being stolen. Catching a cheating mate will also become rather easy. Already one can spot cars in driveways that should not be present from satellite pictures but unfortunately we don't have those pictures updated every fifteen minutes or so. Perhaps Google can get that done for us soon. I wonder how much less we would all pay in taxes if we had enough freedom to really investigate the finances of others. Our car insurance should drop sharply as well as good surveillance would defeat a lot of nonsense claims.
The real issue will rest in whether they can release all of that energy slowly, in a controlled way. Otherwise they will have limited uses. A high energy capacitor dumping all its energy instantly can be a real thrill.
Perhaps some of the more talented among us will develop special effects or gifts for the RIAA. That way they will know how it feels to be picked on and singled out.
Ron Paul might be the best idea since peanut butter but a vote in that direction is a wasted effort. Dark horse candidates insure that you will never get your way at all.
As for understanding the constitution I think it is the public that often fails to understand what it really says. The context of the constitution takes for granted that you accept the notion that the first obligation of government is to persist. You can not be safe from foreign enemies or receive any benefit from government at all unless that government has the power to do whatever it must to keep itself in existence. For example we are guaranteed free speech. But we must realize that that free speech is limited to speech that will not destroy the government.
You might try a very sympathetic routine on them if you have a bit of time to spare. Tell them that you hire quite a few people to solicit across several areas and product lines and that you are quite sure that you can pay them more and offer far more than their current employer. Schduel a job interview. Let them dress up, drive and go through the whole routine. Then tell them that you wouldn't hire them if they paid you a million bucks!
As a rule any requested communication deserves intense scrutiny. Unsolicited communications are another matter. But anything that has been requested deserves serious concentration, time and effort.
In blocking Wiki there is an inherent suggestion that "official" sources are better. But anyone familiar with text books is surely aware that texts are loaded with errors. Not only are the errors of the usual type but many schools have retained texts for so long that significant portions of what used to be considered true are now known to be false. I wouldn't be at all shocked if an in depth study concluded that Wiki is more accurate than school texts.
I wouldn't poke fun at the research. At very low frequencies the differences between sound and an electrical impulse are obscure if not non existent. Some expensive metal detectors that operate at about 1.5K demonstrate that kind of signal output.
Usually the live CD phase doesn't last too long as people want certain software that suits their own needs. Linux is not harder than Windows. But a Windows user usually will have a really hard time switching over. It's easier for a newbie that has never run Windows. For those that are making the switch the key is to cold turkey all use of Windows. This way the person will have to get the syntax or procedure right on Linux which they will not tend to do if they can boot into Windows to get around the stumbling point.
As for the live CDs Puppy and DSL are simply amazing. They are also one heck of a security tool as no computer is likely to ever get infested while running from a live CD.
Go buy an expensive piano. It will quickly teach anyone that it is not the piano but the fellow that's playing it that gets the job done. All operating systems are like that. I'm sure that Linux has some limitations but I can assure you that Microsoft's products also have very real limits. Betwixt the two I'll take Linux. And I sure as heck would not judge Linux by how well it co-operates with Windows products. If for some weird reason I really needed to run Windows I'd buy a separate computer and keep it detached from my Linux systems. I will not put up with microsoft's weirdness.
Sadly many school administrators are really the worst sorts of people and expanding their authority to deal with social and emotional issues simply wouldn't work well in the US. I would not wish to pretend that our kids are only dealing with other nice kids in schools. For example in one local high school the police were watching 13 known drug dealers. These kids were of the type that murder and treachery of all types were truly part of their bag of tricks. The justice system tends to pump young felons right back into the schools or it takes so long to develop a strong legal case that many will go all the way through school before the cuffs go on and stay on. So kids using pen names on the net may very well be pointing a finger at people for very real reasons in order to warn other kids about certain people in their schools. You don't want to create a situation where kids can't warn other kids about the dangers of associating with some students. And you sure as heck don't want to claim that they must have full legal proof in order to cry out and point a finger either on or off campus.
There is no way that a school should acquire authority to regulate off campus behaviors. The line between fair game and verbal bullying is not all that easy to define. A kid may write that Joe is a creep on a web site and that very well may be an accurate statement of fact. We don't need to waste the time and money it would take to have school employees sort through the ten billion issues that kids surely raise on the net at night.
The other side of this is that some peoples' sensitivities are way too over active and we will get into the area where kids try to harden each other up in order to deal with life which usually does involve teasing, insults and a bit of social isolation. Do you recall the punches to the upper arms to find out just who could take the pain and deliver a solid punch? It's called bucking up. It's rather like two rams smashing their heads together and is the normal and usual mode of behavior for teenage boys. It's not lovely. It's just biology in action.
It won't work. Air has little ability to store heat. Commercial products already exist that store energy in the form of cold water. Water is an efficient heat storage medium. One other problem in looking at some of their drawings is that when water is pushed into a tower top it tends to evaporate and travel upwards. Their idea is that the air will travel down the tower. Take a look at a common, industrial AC water tower and you will notice that the air flow is aided in its upward direction.
If you had the money to build an insulated storage tank roughly the same size as your home and chill the water within by use of solar cells driving a refrigeration coil you could actually cool your home easily. Regions that have cold winters could easily chill the storage area down to freezing temperatures and if the block of ice is large enough it is obvious that air conditioning would be efficient.
That is more than a joke CPUs are a very efficient heat source. Using a pile of CPUs to heat a pool might work out better than existing devices.
However the converse has a real limit. I live in Florida and there are many times during the year when the real problem is that pools get too hot. Water at 98* F is not that much fun in a pool. It is hard for a pool to drop below 65* F. during our worst cold spells. Most of the year the water is probably above 87*F so it is of little use for AC purposes.
People were trying to produce fuel from algae way back in 1974 when we had a serious fuel shortage. It didn't work then and probably won't work now. The same notion received federal funding with fermentation of water lillies. The feds dumped money into that one as well. What might make it work is genetic alteration so that the algae carried sugar or more starch that would ferment into a stronger brew. One thing is certain. Algae and water lillies both reproduce better than anything I can imagine.
I agree that Ubuntu is now a great way to go. The reason that I think that it would work well in an academic setting is that Ubuntu tends to self maintain and requires little concentration from the user. That means that mental energy can go to the task at hand rather than maintaining the OS. Conversely there is also an OS called scientific Linux that is maintained by the fellows at CERN. It is loaded with math and science tools and descends from RH. I liked Scientific Linux quite a bit. Flip flopping between the two approaches I would go with Ubuntu as the Debian repository surely has enough math and science tools to suit almost anyone. And with Debian derived systems there is never that endless effort to chase down dependent files.
This looks like a law maker seeking publicity to me. I'll bet money that there has never been a law on the books that prevented the blind from hunting in the first place. Maybe next they'll pass a law that allows the dead to hunt. Texas is a bit weird.
Try to avoid the use of HMOs if you can. They often offer more of a pretense of health care than real care. They also have great difficulty keeping doctors and other employees which is really negative for people fighting long term issues. Frankly the Feds should be jailing a lot of HMO operators as it crosses over into the criminal realm more than most people would like to think.
The worst problem in medical care is insurance. It has sent the price of care beyond all reason. It also allows the bad doctors to keep on working. If they had to pay out of their own wealth when they get drunk and amputate the wrong leg malpractice incidents would be made much more rare than they are today. By the way a hospital in Tampa with a long record of bad incidents actually did amputate the wrong leg of a patient. Worse yet a few cases exist where the wrong lung was removed.
In order to fix medical care we need to disrupt the entire medical system and socialize medical care.
Usually companies cater to their best audience. If the US happens to either use or support a distro more than another country it makes sense to cater to the best client.
Johny Carson used to joke that he couldn't make any ethnic jokes without a ton of mail and threats of law suits until he discovered Bulgaria. He got so little mail when he insulted Bulgaria that it wasn't a bother at all. It seems that darned few people from Bulgaria watched the To Night show. So I guess the Linux teams just might be about the same. After all, would you create an OS for a nation that had zero electricity?
It may become a question of who did wrong. For example if Microsoft hides its code in such a way that innocent people may accidentally duplicate it and Microsoft doesn't quickly protest then the liability might be seen as being Microsoft's. If warned and Microsoft reveals its code then the Linux developer might have stopped and gone in another direction. Silence can be causal and usually the law requires prompt response when wronged.
It is true that getting rid of all immigrant labor would raise the economic tide for American workers. And that goes all the way from talented doctors right on down to tomato pickers.
However the type of people that work at simple jobs are in trouble regardless of immigration policies. We are seeing the beginning of a potentially deadly class war. It is a continuation of what went on in Russia that brought down the Czars as well as the issues in Germany that caused the Reich to rise. Now we are seeing the failure of democracy in the west. America is already a lost battleground. We are conceptually bankrupt. For example our system is so poorly defined that we now vote upon immigration issues rather than simply applying the laws already on the books and we avoid good solutions because of the pressure from corporations. For example if a company breaks the law by hiring or contracting with illegal workers we should be putting the management and owners in prison and seizing the assets of the businesses. If we cut off all work opportunities for illegals they will run back across the border like their underpants were on fire. We don't have to catch them at all. Simply crush those that hire them.

Florida now as African Killer Bees! So our crops will be pollinated really great but the poor farmers might not make it back from the barn!

I hope the kid wins. But he is trying to bring truth into the court room. Usually courts don't like truth very much.
