So you claim it is study of how magic works, not just magic?
Yes it is a study of "magic", there is a distinct difference from studying dinosaurs and being a dinosaur.
So what is the study of how unicorns or the toothfairy works?
That's Mythology, it used to be religion and now those things are like Astrology is in scientific thought.
Theology is just philosophy, about imaginary creatures.
Yep, exactly correct. In addition, science is also philosophy, although it's about something more tangible than God.
Theology provides testable (or arguable, a test is just a good way to prove your point)theories.
It may not be a rather useful theory, and not very applicable to how things work in the universe, but it does provide some proof. It's pretty useless when trying to explain something in the realm of science (like lightning), just as science is pretty useless when explaining the afterlife.
I have to disagree that religion just provides magic. Science is a study how the universe works. Theology is a study of how God(s) work. Both try to come up with a model that helps make understanding the universe or God. Then other people look at these models and argue whether the model is correct. Science has a nice way to help ones argument by experimentation, theology is pretty much restricted to using thought experiments and history. So theology can offer testable theories, but (a) they tend to deal with god and (b) it's more of a thought experiment than a physical one. With regards to creationism, Darwin came up with a model called evolution; Catholic theologians came up with a "model" saying that if evolution is true it does not imply God does not exist. So it gives arguable theories something, but only about God and not the physical world.
disclaimer IANA scientist or theologian and my simplification is probably over simplified.
I have to agree with Joanie that I hope that the laying off (not fired as in the summary) was an accident. But since they've laid off a bunch of other people working for accessibilty, it doesn't look all that good. Hope the letter helps, but if they've already started I don't think they mind having the bad "we don't like the disabled/orphans/elderly/puppies " PR. Good luck for getting the letter to work.
Everyone here on/. knows Scientology is evil. But why did Anonymous do something stupid with a denial of service attack? Now the Scientologists can say Anonymous is a terrorist organization, get rid of all its critics using the PATRIOT act and get some good PR too. The only way Scientology will be defeated is if there is some major internal schism or everyone realizes they're not the nicest religion out there.
So does this explain why you can stick "random" genes into a completely different organism and gain traits that wouldn't arise normally?
This seems like it'll be very useful in GE if the mechanics of it are explored more.
The filter notices a new template and blocks it. There are only so many ways you can say you're selling cheap viagra. I highly doubt a spammer can find enough ways to say the same thing so that an email in a certain format is less than the blocking threshold (apparently 1000 emails FTA).
You could play something like Zork or another IF game, I don't think that should kill the battery that badly. And the choices in the summary also seem very basic, crossword puzzles and sudoku, it'd only drain your battery if you are really really bad at it or try to.
I'm no Time Lord, But I don't see how a sonic boom has enough torque to screw in a screw and be safe enough not end up destroying the screw and/or user. Although screwdrivers do lots of other things too, like killing people in a very short radius by stabbing them. If that's all you need in a screwdriver, then you're set then otherwise keep looking for police boxes for a while.
Um LORAN-C just sends a radio signal. It won't really stop another country from using it in their own country (unless you bomb theirs). Also for selective availability, DGPS is a pretty good work around for it.
I visited Cape Race, NL which has both a LORAN-C station and a DGPS station. Looking at the two I don't blame the USCG for getting rid of LORAN-C, the LORAN-C has a nice & large radio tower, as well as a giant room with huge motors spinning around, mainframes that look like they're from the 60s. And since it's so far up North, you have to heat the room in the winter and cool it in the summer. On the contrast, the DGPS site was a couple of racks in a trailer. and 4 6m-ish towers around it. The heating cooling costs are much less and most of the maintanance is just scraping the snow/ice off the towers when it snows:-). Combine this wit the fact that no-one really uses LORAN-C anymore, it's not hard to see why
Really all you have to do is wield a noncursed jailbroken unlocked iPhone 3GS and read 2 noncursed scrolls of enchant weapon (one while not confused and the other while confused), apply a can of grease and voila you have a +1 Blessed rustproof corrodeproof greased jailbroken unlocked iPhone 3GS. So not much of an increase in price unless you have lots of CHA when you sell it to the shopkeeper.
The Chinese children are completely innocent, if there was justice in the world, it'd be the pathetic people, who care about making a few bucks at the cost of someone elses life, who should be getting posoined.
You'd need a very large group of people in the same general area to pull that off. The "celebrity is dead" effect isn't going to cause a false positive for an earthquake because you'll have people mentioning it who aren't remotely close to the epicenter (like kansas or somewhere). And it doesn't really matter since it's only a complementary huh-that's-cool kind of detection, the real detection info should cancel out the misinformation..
The only problem is that they don't ever call out Facebook specifically. They just say social networking sites. They could have meant MySpace or Twitter or something else. And anyways at least it's consistent with their sharing photo section, which you're going to do with FB anyways. So no real grounds to sue.
I'm no expert on this, but couldn't the 4 hour difference be explain by people (men) who only play for a little bit and quit? I would think that there would be less casual women gamers since a woman playing computer games reflects on their "geekiness" more than a man. So there's more attrition among men since the women don't try in the first place? So what would be interesting would be a comparision against hardcore men and hardcore women, and see if there's a difference there.
In the Halifax airport there's a preclearance for crossing the US border. Yes, they still do all of the annoying US border crossing stuff, but they are much much friendlier about it than at other crossings I've been to. Yes, It only really helps if your flying, but it takes so much stress out of flying to the US.
I find it interesting that they're already sold out on all but the medium radiation level ore. I wonder if any/.ers are going to have a radiating glow on their face when they open up their presents this christmas...
Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price fixing and market allocation.
So this sounds like a good thing to come from the bill, but does this mean that Insurance companies are going to pull a lot of new nasty tricks to increase their profit... What tricks exactly would they pull? There's bound to be a loop hole somewhere in the bill...
I swear Wave-Particle Duality is the 'God did it' of the physics world. Can't explain something, Wave-Particle Duality is the reason! Can't find a cause, A Wave is it! Can't explain it using a wave, we got particles! Can't explain particles, itsa wave!
Heck lot's of things in Physics were like that, I mean we still can't really explain gravity all that well either so gravitons are clearly "God did it". Quantum Mechanics? Clearly God is playing dice. Higgs-boson yep it's a God particle. Dark Matter may be tough to explain, but it's no more a Deus-Ex Machina than much of the rest science.

I'm going to be paranoid and wonder what's going to happen to senators & reps like Wyden (He's there until 2012) during the election this year.
