Actually I believe I have KDE 3.1 installed on a RH9 distro. I think I'm gonna stick with this setup until my group figures out which distro we will use going forward.

I haven't measured my productivity to support one OS over the other. On the other hand, I IM'd a coworker yesterday saying that linux would take over the desktop when it gets a unified clipboard. I had about 3 different apps (Netbeans, TOra, and Konsole) open and I couldn't move text between the 3 consistently. In the end, I just made sure I could see the text in both windows and typed it in again. Maybe there isn't a productivity boost, but how can you say a unified UI doesn't make a difference when the user has to think about the UI limitations?

I skip plenty of commericals with my TiVo. For a 30 minute recording, I seem to be shown the same ad at every commerical break. I think people want a bit of variety in their commericals. How many ads are repeated during the Super Bowl?

Then you can be at the other end of the spectrum. I also backed up a recording, hit pause and called my wife into the room to see a commerical. Of course it was only the second time I saw the commerical. I'm not sure how many more times I will watch it.

Think I went through 2 40Mb drives in the first two years I owned it. In those days I felt Applecare was better. It was a lot easier to find computer stores that were authorized resellers and they didn't blink and eye when you dropped off an apple and said it needed to be fixed. These days, I'm not sure I trust the few places left that would honor Applecare. Luckily, I'm a short drive to the KoP mall and an Apple Store.

  14. Re:Because developers don't play well with others. on Outstanding Objects (Developed Dirt Cheap) · · Score: 1

Some days I don't play well with others is because I don't want to get burned by the other developers. My example is we used WebObjects to develop a couple products. The developers were generally split into two groups and we generaly chunked things out into WebObject frameworks. My product had need to talk to a database that the other group had developed a framework for and I pluged it into my product. A couple months later my product won't compile any more and is complaining about a class I've never heard of. Tracked it down to the framework I got from the other group. They needed some new functionality and did a code refactor, which I would have been fine with, but the database model now made use of a class in another framework. I didn't have need of the new framework and did not want to incur another dependicy and whatever dependices it had. So I ended up copy what I needed and forking the code cuase there was no way I could convince a developer in the other group that classes needed to be moved. It also seemded like everytime we thought there was overlap, the code was useless because of the dependencies that added no benifit to my product.

I would have to disagree with you that commerical software is what we need to teach our nation's children. Software keeps changing and people need to relearn features for the new version. So why should we teach students a specific commerical software package that will change by the time they get to the real world? I don't want our English teacher training students on Word XX to create their term paper because that's what the real world uses. Learning how to do a term paper at this point probably involves a word processor, so there may be lab time that the students get hands on time with a one. Does it really matter that they used an open source word processor as apposed to the one from Microsoft? Learning the basics of a word processor or a spreadsheet program should translate to other versions be they open source or commerical. We should teach students to do things not use products that will be obsolete in the near future.

As other people have noted, IBM also makes PPC chips. The problem with ditching Motorola is the Altivec (sp) core in the G4. This core is what makes me not care about the Mhz cause it can really rip a CD into mp3s. To my knowledge, IBM is only making G3s and has no interest in putting the Altivec core in their chips. Since IBM made a custom PPC chip for the GameCube, I'm sure they are willing to make some for Apple. Unfortunately, I think that will drive up the cost of Macs.
