I'll see what I can do about cleaning the DVD player. The two brands of DVD players that I've owned were Sony and Panasonic. In fact the Panasonic, which is my current player, is just over a year old.

Agreed. Media damage is about the only thing I don't like about current DVDs. I have about 200 Music CDs (and my wife has about as many) and can't really recall any problems with playback. Where as I have an episode of Sex and the City on DVD that I didn't even get to watch because of the smallest scracth that I can barely see. I've also checked out DVDs from the library that were unwatchable. My personal experience leads me to believe that we need media that can handle media damage better.

In fact, I don't think the public will take a 3rd party candidate seriously until they have served a couple terms as either a governor or congressmen. A 3rd party has to take the long view into consideration and build a track record that can back up a presidental candidate.

Yeah I bought the wrong TV, but I didn't buy a low end brand. I made sure it had component video when I bought it and wrongly assumed that component video meant support for 480p. What the hell is the point of putting component video inputs on a TV if it doesn't support 480p? I bought the component cables and I can't see any difference on the video quality.

Here comes my rant. I've had a progressive scan DVD players for about a year that I got for a reasonable price. About a month ago, I bought a 32" Sony WEGA with component video inputs. The salemen tied to upsell me on the Monster Component Video cable to use with my DVD player. The TV only supports 480i on the component video. Standard TVs aren't even supporting 480p yet. People will be downgrading these formats to 480i for the next 5 years until the TVs support these formats.

Granted this is off topic, but this looked like a good spot. I recently bought a 32" Sony WEGA and my only complaint is the fact that it can't handle the progressive scan output from my DVD player. The component video inputs only handle 480i. I honestly can't tell the difference between the normal input and the component video input. What's the point of putting component video on a TV if it can't handle 480p?

If you note above, I said "would prefer". I'm not sure that the computerized polls would be any better. But if counties and state are going to use them, then I have an opinion on how they should be function. The old system has a paper trail and I want one in a computerized one. I literally want the system to be bullet proof. If a system now has a bullet in it and is no longer functioning, I still want the votes that were taken to still count for the election.

A losing politican should be able to ask for a recount. I also think that random polling places should do a manual audit to confirm the system works for every election.

I would prefer a hard copy to confirm the vote. I don't think that the voter should take that hard copy home. The hard copy should be put in a ballot box after the voter has confirmed that indeed that was their vote. Similar as is done with normal ballots. If the results of a polling place are called into question, then we head to the ballot box and do a manual recount. So yes the individual voters shouldn't have hard evidence of they way they voted, but I want hard evidence for auditing purposes.

I will grant that Apple doesn't focus on the low end as it doesn't generate enough profit. My config would be to make a headleass eMac in desktop or mini-tower case. This headless eMac might have an AGP slot, but no PCI slots. Like the eMac this mac would have 2 configurations priced at $800 and $1000. Same price as the current eMac and Apple didn't have to pay for the tube. To justify this price, I would say that Apple has to have a better video chipset than the eMac and allow for multiple monitor support out of the box. Maybe the multiple monitor support is only on the high end config.

He/She has "root" access but the OS doesn't give it to them unless they give password verification. Unless MS has gotten better with their security model since my NT days, windows generally seems to make everyone an admin to make basic programs run and thus make app security holes really dangerous. note: excuse or correct my windows ignorence, I haven't used recent versions of windows. Hey me too! ;-)

The company I worked for last year closed up shop and moved to Ann Arbor, MI. They started selling off old equipment to the employees. I picked a Compaq Armada 1700 (a laptop) for pretty cheap and thought I set up a wireless network at home. Checked the websites to see which hardware was supported. Went with some LinkSys stuff. The card just didn't really work with the laptop. I was using RH9 and Fedora, which both recognized the card and loaded the driver. A couple minutes in and the network is hosed.

I'm a long time mac and unix user with various flavors of OSs in my house. So I really didn't switch when I got an iBook. The only problem I experienced was that I had to enter the WEP key because the airport software would forgot it on reboot. Seemed to be a problem for networks that don't broadcast their SSID. An update for the software was out within a week and solved my problem.

To add some on topic content: I most likely buy the family pack of the update for $200 and install it on the 3 macs in my house.

I've been listening to the Pixies for over 10 years. My brain practically has the beat for the next song hardwired. When listen to "Death to the Pixies", I end up thinking at the beggining of the next song: "That's not the right song."

On the other hand, I've thrown together some mix CDs for the car where those songs get more listening then their albums. In that case, my brain is getting me ready to hear a N*E*R*D song after the QotSA song.

I'm really looking for some utils to analyze my mp3s to populate the ID3 tags. One of the fields I would love to use is BPMs. Then I could construct a playlist that arranged the songs with similar beat rates together. Also the idea would be ramp the beat rate up and down throug the playlist.
