So hosting companies should vet the content that appears on pages they host? Apart from anything else that may make them liable for the content they don't refuse. How about postal services choosing not to allow people to post certain items? Or phone companies cutting off the phone when you say certain words? Or tollways refusing to let you travel on them because you have a red car (more prone to accidents don't ya know)? Or airlines choosing not to allow certain ethnic groups to fly as they are an increased risk? Wouldn't want to live in your world...

Not our will to survive. More our will to accept large human cost in major projects. Dunno about the US examples cited but the UK railways were created at a cost of people(mostly Irish) per mile, and I know the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme (Australia's Hoover) cost 121 lives. Having said all that, I think all western governments could do with a healthy cleanout of self serving bureaucrats who do less to ensure safety of the environment/mankind than protect their own jobs.

As a poster "flamebaited" earlier in this thread, Australia, one of the least densely populated places on the planet*, has a varied choice of ISP. I have a fixed line ADSL2+ in Sydney and a mobile 3G service at my inland property which is good enough to stream ABC video. They have achieved this by forcing the previous monopoly (Telstra) to allow other ISPs to place DSLAMs in their exchanges, or simply on-sell Telstra services after getting them at the wholesale rate. *Having said that, it is also one of the most urbanised.

Not that I am saying it is a bad policy - getting bright people migrating once they have reached working age is actually a pretty smart way to run migration.
