  1. Benchmarks on SoHo NAS With Good Network Throughput? · · Score: 1

This is something I have been researching recently to store my photography, and I found that Toms Hardware has some good reviews and benchmarks using Intel's NAS performance toolkit. This review http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/DS207-synology-nas,2081-5.html shows a comparison of the Synology DS-207 to similar lower priced units. From what I've seen, most of the inexpensive NAS's don't have very good throughput either due to low power cpu's, or slower bus speeds. I would like to have a nice appliance, but for the best price/performance it looks like I'll be building a box with FreeNAS or OpenFiler.

  2. Re:Ummmm handheld radio? on Coming Soon, Roadcasting · · Score: 1

At first I thought you were right, it's all about the buzzwords, nothing much new. But then I noticed they are talking about to or from ANY vehicle within a 30-mile radius. With the simple FM broadcaster, you have very limited range, as well as a limited number of channels not already in use by regular radio stations. So provided that the WiFi (802.11p) ad hoc network properly handles all the nodes in the mesh, you could be *casting many more stations than are currently available in the FM spectrum. (see, you have to use all the buzzwords in the same sentence)
But if it ever happens, it will simply crushed by the RIAA as piracy on the open road, rather than on the open sea.

It's perfect for when I'm on holiday. No need to lug around a laptop to keep in touch with everyone. I've got all my friends in my address book, all my inbox and folders all on the USB drive. Just go to any internet cafe, and plug it in. Works great.

I have had a number of friends that have ipods tell me they want to get a mac because they love their ipods so much.

I think that the ipod gets people interested in Apple who would never have considered a mac before.

    Good point.
Battery life is not such a big deal with laptops, but with cell phones it's different. With my phone I notice that the battery goes much faster when I'm in analog areas, even if I'm not making calls. I can just imagine it trying to constantly relay 802.11 packets!

  8. Re:Where's the bandwidth going to come from on 802.11 vs. 3G For Mobile Access · · Score: 2, Insightful

The amount of bandwidth used depends on how many hops you are from the access point. You will use bandwith from every hop between you and the AP. So if most everyone has to go through say 5 nodes, the available bandwith will be saturated before you even get to the AP.

My question is what happens when everyone leaves downtown at night? Since there is no one to relay the signal, you'll only have coverage when you are close to an AP

When someone downloads an album to see if they like it, and they find out that most of the songs suck, they shouldn't go out and buy the CD. Because this will show the artists that they can't get away with putting out albums with 1 good track, and the rest "filler" songs. Consumers shouldn't have to shell out for a new cd just to find out that there are only 1 or 2 good songs.
