    We use the combination of Microsoft Lync, where you can start a common whiteboard, and a Wacom Tablet, so you can do some freehand drawing.
    It is not free. But the cost is offset after one meeting with members from all over the world...

    especially when the french car industry is most advanced in the area of diesel engines - renault nissan decided several years ago concentrate the design of diesel engines within renault and gasoline engines with nissan.... peugeot is even selling complete engines to bmw. some minis and bmw series 1 use peugeot engines.

    i doubt very much that the french goverment would give such important area of the french industry

    With the strong influence Microsoft has on big corporation's IT (Exchange/Office/Outlook) it would not surprise me that within one or two we would see strongly integrated phones for those corporations. If they make some attractive, usefull and secure phones (Nokia WP are hardware wise very attractive...), Microsoft could wipe out Blackberry.

    In today's times where you need a Visa to enter the US, a lot of people bypass it. In the past it was difficult to fly from let's say South America to the Far East, because everybody had to fly via the US. This is a thing of the past. You can now fly via Dubai or South Africa. You can even do a round the world tour without stepping on US territory a single time, but went through all continents.
    With the Visa requirement, the US tracks foreigners. With TSA, the US tracks it's own citizen...

    A chat and email solution is one aspect.

    But we humans can convey more information via spoken language and mimics. An audio and video connection for interacting with the team member across the globe is important.

    Use IM with integrated Audio and Video, and which enables desktop sharing for collaborative working.

    To stitch further the sense of a team despite of the distance, you can extend the office with the view of the other offices' common room filmed from a camera onto a video wall. Of course there is a privacy issue, and not everybody is comfortable with it. It is worth a try

    When do we get the connected rooms across several rooms from Dan Simmons' Hyperion???

    An issue that needs to be solved is the storage of electricity, as sunlight is available only during the day. Although it is not addressed in the article, the issue stays. One proven technology is hydroelectric storage using dams in the Atlas or in continental Europe. But the capacity is not high enough. But in any way, the Desertec is definitely a alternative to fossil fuels.

    That could be taken care of. Or at least the result of the transit to mars would show what a manned mission should take care of in terms of protection.

    It is also a testbed for the vasimr propulsion.

    ...This is marketing bluff. I'm doing administation for both Linux and Windows (NT/2000/XP). At some point I really prefer to have a Linux system. Sometimes difficult to understand. But a Distribution from SuSE or Redhat is coming with nearly all features included and working. You know where the stuff is! When it comes to Windows administration, it is not only DLL Hell, it is also tools hell! Want to do something special, it always comes to a special tool you need to pay for...

    This process is called decolonization ... It started for the USA with the Boston tea party, wanting independency from UK. And now the registrars are doing with their own kind of tea party, building their own root server, and wanting independency from the US, although in a different and in a much more peacefull way.

    it boils down to "code for food, shelter, amusement"... Those open source programmers, helpers do it to earn a living, doing what they like to do, and in return get money, which allows them to live where they want to. The return for multi's is working software done by motivated workers.
    The side effect is that the code is also usable by third parties, even competitors (remember who ships samba with their unix products, or who ships linux with their hardware).

    WLAN on Lufthansa is available since 2 years, for flights over the atlantic to the US and Canada...
    And the quality is good everywhere in the aircraft. I was sitting in economy class, and could work without problems. I suspect they have several access points throughout the aircraft.
    And in fact, phone calls are possible using VoIP... So annoying your neighbour is already possible :( skype me!!!

    think about the netfilter and reactos cases...
    And this will increase with time, with companies not caring for licenses just to make more profit...
    The internet community should care and take such cases to the courts. netfilter has been successfull with this in Germany.

    Yes, a lot pf people are saying that it has been done before, that a terminal server is cheaper, etc.
    I could think of one practival use, apart of cs lab:
    What this thing misses still is sound - a usb stereo headset so you can do ip telefony (4 sound cards wouldn't make sense).
    Such a setup would be quiet usefull in countries like Brasil. Put a CPU, 4 LCD screens, 4 keyboard, 4 mouses, 4 headsets and a connection to the internet (phone, dsl, wireless, radio, etc), an you can rapidly deploy a internet/phone access in a remote area, an connect to the world.
    And administration wise it is easier than manage 5 computers and a router.
    The CPU is the single point of failure. But if everything is standardised, ship the same working unit to the remote area as a replacement.
