Replying to my own post, but just a clarification - there is no statute in VA that states that public facilities can not ban weapons, however, there is no law that says they can or must either (with the notable exception of courthouses and passenger airport terminals - if you consider terminals public facilities). In the absence of a prohibition it is automatically assumed legal. Localities are however barred from making any laws stricter than what the state allows (preemption) and as such can not pass any bans of their own.

There is no freedom to bring weapons into any public building anywhere in this country

Yes there is. In fact, in the Commonwealth of Virginia it is explicitly stated by law, and local governing bodies can't do anything about it. I go to local Board of Supervisors meetings in a PUBLIC building, and they have metal detectors... but they have to let me in with my pistol and can not bar me from the building soley on the grounds of my carrying a weapon. Plus, if it's not concealed, no license is even required. I'm not even sure what the point of the metal detectors is supposed to be.

The General Assembly Building in Richmond is the same way, which I have been to on multiple occasions. The only sticking point there is a potentially illegal rule instituted last year that bars open carry without a permit in the building. A statewide rights group (VCDL) is preparing to sue over this, as research into what legal standing the Rules committee has in both the VA Constitution and statutory law seems to indicate that they have none, and only operate out of "custom". They may even be in violation of law by instituting such a rule under the VA FOIA statutes as it states that such rules must be ratified by the full House and Senate, of which this one was not.

Well, I buy Japanese imports of anime titles... and those usually run you twice or more the cost of a US DVD. Same with Japanese CDs. However, there are titles that I'd like to have that won't make it to the US soon (or ever), such as the Shoujo Kakumei Utena movie. And even though the Japanese anime discs are more expensive than their US counterparts (if one exists) a good portion of the time they are of higher quality - the aforesaid Utena movie is less than an hour and a half long but is on a dual-layered disc, and the bitrate stays in the 9s almost throughout the entire movie. What does this mean? It means that it comes out beautifully, with no artifacting, bright colors, and a picture sharpness that rivals laserdisc (or is even better). Only problem I see is that there is no English translation on all but a very few titles (I believe Gainax is going to do English subs on the DVD release of FLCL), but I don't care - I want to see it regardless.

People in the US have been importing anime laserdiscs for a good long time now, and laserdiscs were never region coded. The region coding on DVDs is a just minor annoyance with the availability of region-free players. (FWIW, I have a region-free, and Macrovision-free, Pioneer-DV525.)

  14. Re:Anime Resources Online on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

If you are looking for some Anime resources on line, here is a short list off the top of my head:

    - EX
This is a review site that reviews a ton of Anime, Anime Music, Manga(comics where a lot of Anime comes from), and other stuff(games, books, etc that are Anime related). One of the oldest and longest running online Anime e-zines.

EX is one of the best magazines out there for anime in the US. The US print mags are sorta sub-standard IMHO.

    - Hitoshi Doi's Seiyuu Database
Hitoshi's exploits as a Seiyuu(a voice actor/actress) are legendary and his database shows it. If there was a piece of animation made in Japan and there was a speaking role in it, it has been cataloged here. Great for crossref-ing your favorite actress!

Still the best resource out there, but is starting to show a lot of holes recently... there's only so much Hitoshi can keep up with, and he seems to be mostly interested in shoujo or otherwise cutesy series.

Conventions(there are a bunch...to list them all would kill me ^_^)
    - Anime Expo
Southern California con. Quite possibly, the "high profile Anime con" where a lot of the domestics and some of the Japanese companies make announcements.

Going this year! Woohoo! Got my Zelgadis costume ready too...

    Finally....
    - Anipike
An ambitious attempt to catalog all of the Anime content out there on the web. Has an interesting "Last Exit" column that showcases the best(and the worse) of Anime Online. This site is great to find anything and everything Anime.

YMMV. I can't say I always agree with Ryan in his column, but he seems to have a very moderate viewpoint, between casual and hardcore fan.

And yes, Lost Universe IS Slayers in Space.

Sort of... same writer, same chara designer, same animation studio, mostly the same seiyuu, and same metamythology. But not the same characters, premise, or even universe. (The Slayers world is one of four universes in their mythology. The Lost Universe universe is one of the other three.) There is a cross-over in Slayers Try involving the Gorn Nova and Dark Star, but that was not part of the novels and even the creator said that the two series use the same words (the mythology) for different things. Funny, though... characters in both series have light sabers (Kain's Psy Blade, Gourry's Kikari no Ken/Gorn Nova).

And I avoid any and all dubs, personally. It's just ... wrong.

Normally, I do too, but the Trigun dub is actually better than the original Japanese IMHO. (Speaking of series crossovers, Vash really reminds me of Justy Ueki Tylor in the Old West...)
