    Not to nitpick but 64bit aint all about stuffing more ram in the box, its also about using the larger numbers without all the fiddling with them in your application. Generally, I admit, you dont have to use the large number support, but when you do its really super keen nice. Especially on my laptop.

    and the near term motivation is the idea that Bell can't charge google. Its not fair that google makes millions by providing a service and Bell only gets the subscription fees. Its just not fair.     become more transparent.

    What effectivly serves malware development also serves things like clamav and snort. I suspect this botnet thing is just a short term issue for them, the long term problem is full-disclosure used to defend oneself.
    Maybe I am wrong. Maybe it is all about malware developers becoming more effective. If thats true then this reads like an appology for being ineffective.

    Or maybe its just a sad cry for help. Like a suicide note left in a conspicuous place.
    Its fun reading things into things.

    Oh I guess it wouldn't be very effective unless it was able to intterupt everyone in what they were doing. Welcome to the new and improved "in your face" politics. Next they will be legislating mandatory PVR passthrough, telephone interrupt, and server pushed popups, just to make they have our attention for the weekly test.

    Ok, it probably wont be that bad. It might even be a good thing when we really need it. But I am skeptical.It just seems like it has a huge potential to waste a truck load of time over the years.

    And I dont think the grand plans of our forbearers have really turned out the way they planned. Planning is a good idea and it helps groups of people pull in similair directions (or gives them something to pull against). But I think we have survived thusfar despite the planning. I believe we will survive the same way we always have.

    How fast does the file format go anyhow? I tried to benchmark .DOC vs ODF but the files just seem to sit there really quickly. Possibly too quick to measure. Maybe I need a faster machine.

    In all fairness, I am not saying that Microsoft can't do it themselves, I'd just like to see a return to the good 'ol days when Microsoft made good, solid applications and were not trying to be all things to all people.

    Ya, I still reminisce about wire-frame FlightSim as well. Ya, playing that game on the AppleII, MicroSoft was the bomb.

    Clearly the solution for stopping people finding security holes is to make distributing open source hacking tools illegal. Isn't this already covered by the DMCA or do we need a new law?

    They are illegal. Not in words on paper, but in practice. Prosecutors like smoking guns, and thats how they use trivial shit. Just get yourself suspected of a related crime, and then have said tools on your laptop."Was there any evidence that the defendant used such tools?" "Yes ma'am, we found something called 'cracklib' on his laptop which is used with other tools to cracking passwords, there is no other reason for it your honor".

    I also learned one other thing that day; judges have zero sense of humor. I think its a requirement for the job or something.

    According to http://andrewhitchcock.org/ (which seems to be the source) the search for "Britney Spears" is well above the search for "porn", and I just dont buy it.

    Oh wait, now that I think about it he did not include the search for "lesbians caught in the act while I was walking my ferret". Which Specifically does not include the word "porn". I begin to see the issue...

    Anyhow, this Andrew guy has articles dateing back to 2001. Its mostly trivial stuff relating to his life until recently. And then it relates to google. So my guess is that people who do a search on google sift through the pages of results and end up on his site. The way I figure it you pretty much have to be interested in google or Andrew before you could wind up there. So his statistics are probably correct. However, the test is screwed to begin with.
    So in the end there are two flaws. The fact that Nick Farrell does not seem to care about what he writes as long as its antagonistic (I use this one sample only as evidence) and the second flaw is that we are talking about it.

    Besides, I didnt see my searches for "lesbians" anywhere in the statistics, which doesn't seem quite right.

    Its big in other places than the US, Germany for instance. In the US its not so big, I would guess about #3, maybe #4. Less than RedHat for sure, but possibly more user base than debian.. in the US. Check your local retail store like Best Buy, they will have RedHat, Mandrake?, and SUSE. Or at least, last time I checked.

    Q. What is its "killer app"?

    A. Linux.
