You sir are the exception and you just prove the rule. But you do have a point. But my point, and I suspect many others will make this same point, is that it is *much* easier for a good admin to admin a *nix box well. For example my Debian servers. I can patch everything I need to except for the kernel with no reboots. But you are right. It just happens that *nix has better technology and in general better admins.
You mean Cracker. While some of these people might be hackers I can't think too many of them are. Please I know everyone else uses the term hacker in this way. But can't we use the real term?
Interesting concept. Well in the big sense,Which was the way I was using it, we simply block all traffic from any known offender. A simple ACL in a router or rule in any "good" firewall can easily accomplish this. If enough people do it soon they will find themselves unable to go anywhere or do anything on the Internet. ISPs will start losing money and get *very* upset and people will start taking care of their security problems.
On the small and/or internal building blocks side of the house. I have to agree with the other post that SMTP needs to be scrapped and we need to implement something new that makes this kind of abuse much harder. Now I'm just a network guy so while I understand the first part I'm not so up on the second part but I would like to hear from those who do know.
I guess I'm not quite tracking. How could someone sue me for putting a rule in my router/firewall saying to drop all traffic from their IP address? I mean what would their complaint be? If this where true they would be able to sue me when I walk off as they are talking and trust me if that was possible I would spend a lot of time in court. I just don't get your point. Please explain.
to block spam. But I think we are going to have to "go nuclear" if we ever want to win this war. What I mean by that is we are going to have to start blacklisting *anyone* who runs a open relay and I don't just mean mail I mean everything. Cut them off from the rest of the world. Only at that point will people get off their butts and solve the problem. That at least is whay I think. No more playing around time to bring out the big guns.
Sometime ago when I needed to find some docs in a vain attempt to figure out why a MS server was wacking a clients network. I had to sign up to download docs. I gave it nothing beyond a false name and a throwaway password but still I felt dirty. But sometimes ya gotta do what you gotta do.
IMHO Sun because with the new workstations they are making you can get a Sun for the same price or less than a Dell. And *never* underestimate the power of "Geek Cool". And just how cool it is to have a Sun and just how uncool it is to have a Dell.:)
You will of course notice that I said the guy was an idiot and that I thought he was wrong. But yes that is the logic that the cops do use. My point is go after him by arguing that the kiddy porn laws are bad laws just as most speeding laws are bad laws. Not that he is going after people for "future crime" which is *not* what he is doing. Even if he is trying to make the crime he is going after them for seem worse by linking it to another crime.
I can see at least one good thing coming of it. That would be the increased use of strong crypto. And it has the addedd advantage of pissing off guys like this. Since those of you who know what I'm talking about and agree with me already agree with me I'm not going to go on and on. For anyone who does not know what I'm talking about but hates the DMCA I'm simply going to post a few URLs and you can educate yourselves.

I am *not* defending this guy. And I think that many kiddy porn laws have nothing to do with protecting children but are motivated by other things. Having said that.
Driking milk is not a crime.
Under current US law having kiddy porn is a crime.
Therefore they are not going after people who may commit a crime they are going after people who *have* commited a crime. He is merely stating that in his opinion this crime can predict another , IMO worse, crime.
Now if you want to argue about whether it should be a crime or not that is another discussion. But for purposes of what he said they are going after people who have commited a crime and as a result he thinks may commit more crimes.
This guy is still scum but at least go after him in the areas where he is wrong rather than making up something he did not say.
Now here is the thing. You get someone who looks like her but has been trained to obey your every whim. In other words you get the perfect 18 year old. Cute and lives to do you. Perfect.
Or the first P4 box that you build and you think you know how memory works but the blanks bite you in the ass and you spend hours before you RTFM. Yup that sucks.
You are right in the original post I assumed (I know I know) that most everyone here knew how clean room reverse engineering works http://www.computerworld.com/softwaretopics/softwa re/appdev/story/0,10801,65532,00.html
and assumed that most people would get that I was talking about the second group involved in the process. My bad.
"Should a closed source vendor be able to look over GPLd software code to see how something was done with the intention of using it in their products?"
No of course not and neither should anyone else be able to steal code. But this is about reverse engineering. And yes closed source vendors should have the right to reverse engineer any feature in any piece of software they see. But keep in mind that in order to reverse engineer something and be legal you have to have *never* seen the code. So the GPL and the BSD licenses are friendly to reverse engineering because the only thing those two licences concern themselves with is the code. This is not the case with shrinkwrap licenses. Without reverse engineering I would dare say that very few of us would have tech jobs just because things would never have moved as fast as they have. Also odd as it is to say MS should be on the right side on this fight because without reverse engineering they would not be around today. In short next time read the article before posting flamebait.
In a couple of diffrent interviews I have heard both Jenna Jameson and Kobe Tai both state that they are now at a point where they have enough money that they only take jobs they want to do. Of course extremely few women are able to retire off of it. I mean for gawds sake very few people who "act" in mainstream movies are ever able to retire off of it. Now to compare it to slavery someone has to be forcing them into it or forcing them to continue to do it. Show me that person/system.
Simple fact of the matter is these are women making money off of their looks. Yes they have a use by date and yes they are unable to work after that. Well they should have chosen a diffrent path. I will agree with you when you can prove to me that they are being forced to do this.
I have a "hello world" Perl script that is at 7.6.5 and has been bug free for it's entire lifetime.:) Oh wait that is not so much what we like to call major is it? Oh well.
But on a serious note I think that there are bugs and then there are bugs. And this certainly falls into the latte category. So I think instead of just saying bug one should say glaring borderline negligent bugs should fall under this. And I can name many major software products that have *never* had anything even close to this bad.
The only reason we are using ISS at the moment is because they have certified sensors for Nokia's IPSO. If I could get a supported Snort package for my IPSO firewalls I would switch in a heartbeat. Having said that yes they are very good have good support and work as advertised. The one thing I wish is that the Linux and IPSO ports would keep up with the Windows stuff.

Teh Titian A.E. thing might be because it is written by the same guy.

I know that here in Oregon that is exactly what they do. I suspect most other places.
This of course brings up the obvious problem with the government. That is the fact that they have no clue in life at all.

OT but I just wonder if everytime someone uses the term "cyberspace" like this if William Gibson just wants to kill himself?

He *did* mention that at the time the story took place he did not understand but now does. Come on guy.
Ya think just maybe. Considering that is from SGI and all. Yes yes as a matter of fact doing huge graphics is one of things it was built to do. :)

Where is "look and feel" mentioned in the GPL?
