The wind energy industry has occasionally been at odds with conservation groups because of bird deaths. They clashed in December [2017] when the Obama administration, eager to promote non-polluting renewable energy as a way to address climate change, announced a new federal rule that allows wind farms to lawfully kill bald and golden eagles under 30-year permits.
I doubt domestic cats are killing bald eagles, and they sure as hell aren't getting federal permits to do so for the next 3 decades.
Is this the beginning of the real life Borg, right here at home? I, for one, welcome our new Collective overlords who, being a collective, cannot possibly be as evil as the dictatorial monopolies and tribes we have now.
That sounds dangerously similar to an individual opinion, and collectives don't allow such acts of rebellion. Careful what you think, Comrade, the Telescreen is always on.
I am American and many people agree that the vast majority of the public SUPPORT this kind of law and order in this country and you libtards are the minority, AGAIN. This is why we support who we support even though it makes you weak snowflakes so angry, the people who will make this country great are the ones who oppose the city thugs who terrorize our daughters and cuckold our sons.
Damned if this one doesn't check all the "Russian TrollBot" boxes...
Do you have access to the proprietary algorithm and data that the company has never given anyone else? Otherwise, you're making an assumption that you have no evidence to support.
I've lived in neighborhoods where being white (or worse, female and white) triggered physical assault and death threats.
I currently live in a neighborhood that's 99% white, and in 9 years the cops have never been called to my home when a black friend came by, nor do I ever see them at the home of the elderly black gent down the street. Conversely, until about a month ago the police were called to another house on the block almost daily for domestic disturbances - white lady and her apparently multiple different black boyfriends. Neighbors of all colors were happy to see that shitshow get evicted.
Point being, assholes are everywhere, not everything has to do with race, and even when it does it's not always white folks being the bad actors.
I would argue that (A) manipulation over time has become less and less subtle,
Disagree - the longer time goes on, the more refined and effective manipulation techniques become, and thus they become even more difficult to notice. Propaganda is more effective today than it was in the 1930's, partially due to being less noticeable (if you can see it, it's not very good propaganda) by the people being manipulated.
A good example of the subtlety of modern manipulation is evidenced by the 24-hour news networks: someone is deciding what stories to run, which ones to ignore, and how to spin them all - notice that CNN and FOX can have 2 completely different angles based on the exact same data: They're manipulating their audiences by determining what information those people will be exposed to.
(B) since everyone knows about the techniques of manipulation it has less effect
That's one hell of an assumption to make.
I'm just saying it does little real harm
A point which I would argue - scientific studies have strongly indicated that the more time a person spends on social networking websites, the more likely they are to develop dangerous mental problems, like increased feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, can attribute to violent behaviors.
"Older iOS devices" probably won't get this feature since many of them aren't compatible with iOS 11.4, and it sounds like the feature automatically turns off when you start using the device again.
I'd rather personally give my PIN to any law enforcement officer who cared to ask for it than have this feature implemented.
I think the issue is more in regards to when they don't ask.
But is this really a bad thing? If there's something I want to use, why not enjoy using it more?
This isn't about "something you want to use," it's about using knowledge of psychology to subtly manipulate people into using something more than they would if they weren't being manipulated.
Jeff Bezos recently spent $40,000,000 to build a clock inside a goddamned mountain. I can't help but think how many homes he could have built with that (in San Fran? Like 35.)
Fortunately for your argument, none of the deaths you attribute to Hitler's words had any involvement with firearms. Right?
Not one that he fired himself. Hitler used his words to get other people to commit acts of violence for him, meaning that words are actually far more dangerous than weapons.
They're also ignoring that any reasonable civilisation would have been likely to build their urban centres in many of the same locations we have; near water. This isn't a cultural preference; it's a huge logistical advantage. Given that we've been doing a hell of a lot more excavating near coastlines than we have in the middle of the Canadian tundra, the odds of finding signs of a past culture are WAY higher than the stated 1%.
And of course, those bodies of water would be in the exact same place, flowing the exact same way, hundreds of millions of years later...
LOL, you think criminal politicians actually prosecute each other.
That's quaint.

The police did their own review...
which pretty much always determines that the cop is a hero who did his job and followed orders
as well as a citizen review board.
Which tend to be made up of people who have close, personal ties to police officers.
Totally legit.
Where do you live that it costs nothing to use those chargers?
Indeed, I see them in grocery store parking lots - no meter, just a plug.
Damn you comical holidays!
OK, so that was a bad example.
Here are some better ones:

But why try to stop the progress?
If you were in a wagon that was progressing towards a 100' high bluff, why wouldn't you try to stop it?
"Progress" is just movement in a direction - not necessarily a good one.
One can progress towards a precipice of destruction just as easily as they can progress towards enlightenment.
It's not fiction when it's actually happening: https://www.scotsman.com/news/...

If you persist in claiming Pluto is not a planet, that does not mean Pluto is not. planet - instead, it means you are an asshole.
Steady on there!
Let's not get too carried away, it's not something to get upset about, unlike say Vi vs Emacs.
nano FTW!
"If science contradicts my belief, then obviously science is wrong."

That's a two-way street, hombre.

You do realize that "Marketing" is really just applied psychology, right?

Taxis pick people up where they are, and drop them where they want to go.
Buses pick people up from bus stations and drop them off at bus stations.
So, not a taxi; but I guess "AirBus" is already taken, so...
Or we can build them homes?
This.
Jeff Bezos recently spent $40,000,000 to build a clock inside a goddamned mountain. I can't help but think how many homes he could have built with that (in San Fran? Like 35.)
we should be asking why the hell manual identity checks are required in the first place
To combat ticket scalping.
So in other words, for no legitimate reason other than market capture.
You could have just said that.
Even simpler solution: respect the "Right of First Sale" and be happy you sold any tickets to begin with.
I deal with a lot of PII at work, and we legally can't put it on someone else's cloud.
I guess we'll just keep using OneNote 2016 and backup to our network. Just sucks that the new version doesn't seem to have that option.
Fortunately for your argument, none of the deaths you attribute to Hitler's words had any involvement with firearms. Right?

To counter this, look at One Note. Microsoft just moved it from Office (paid) to part of Windows (free).
Microsoft account required, so only "free" in the sense that it doesn't cost money.
the ability to easily disable telemetry now
Not really, the OS still tries to talk to the telemetry servers even if you disable all reporting options.
the ability to set "working hours" in which Windows will not update / restart itself because it may interfere with daily activities
To be fair, that never should have been an issue in the first place.
