Look around the world and see how bad it has to get before people get off the couch. And when they do, it always seems to go in the opposite direction it should, towards more nationalistic fascism. Witness what is happening in Europe, and Russia, and now in the US. Canada was sucked in during the Reagan/Thatcher years, but finally they appear to be on the road to recovery to a small extent, though I really don't expect that to last.
