The pattern is known as "Resource Acquisition is Initialization", or RAII. Search for that and you'll get a ton of hits. Simple rule of thumb: new in constructors, delete in destructors. There are smart pointer classes available to help you do this.Boost provides a set of them and it sounds like Qt has something similar.

As a Canuck living in the USA, I completely agree. Canadian patriotism is often conflated with anti-Americanism. It's an unfortunate brew of ignorance and sanctimony. This is easier to see after living abroad and I find it hard to condemn my countrymen when I too was guilty of the same as a younger man.

To make this more topical, my own experience living, studying and working in the USA completely reformed my thinking. Now that I'm headed back home (employer closed the office here, don't have a green card) I'll take that with me and maybe, with a little luck, influence a few of my compatriots. So the reverse brain drain might have the benefit of improving America's image abroad.

Cop bashing is easy, but it's not fair. The officers in uniform who make these arrests don't get paid on commision. If you want to criticize enforcement priorities, look to your elected reps. Yes, in the US that includes the county Sheriff, but not most city departments, state police, or federal agencies.

I understand that people have mixed feelings about the police - it's only natural due to the nature of the job. Law enforcement involves coercion (pay this ticket or go to jail) and coercion makes people angry. I also know that people don't respond well to the "cop personna," which has more to do with preservation of officer safety than you may realize. But please don't accuse "most cops" of being more interested in collecting money than in taking rapists and murderers off the streets. That's untrue and unfair.

I could be off base here, but I think you can still write programs with exceptions, but don't expect Qt to throw any. I'm not at all an experienced C++ hacker, so take this with a grain of salt. Anyway, I'm running an older KDE2 beta with Qt that was compiled without exceptions and I haven't run into any problems at all.

I just checked the kde-devel list and found this, a comment from a source far more qualified to respond. Good luck.

There was an intersting thread on dot.kde.org the other day. Those of you who find KDE2 much slower than KDE1 probably need to recompile Qt with the -fno-exceptions flag added to CXXFLAGS. See the thread for more details.

This improved performance on my machine by at least 30%. Credits go to fura (that's the nick used on dot.kde.org, anyway) for this information.

In a social and business sense, Americans are very welcoming to immigrants and foreigners, and that makes this country a special place to live and work.

As a foreign student at an American school, I agree fully. I don't think most Americans realize, however, how badly the INS misrepresents them. It is my strong opinion that the INS is one of the most hateful government-sanctioned groups of people in the Western world.

Any foreign citizen who resides in the US knows that crossing the border is dangerous. The INS goes out of their way to turn law-abiding, honest people into criminals. They are horrible human beings; the worst America has to offer, outside of the prison system. I won't bore you with stories... Just ask the immigrant in the cubicle next to you.

I have enjoyed living and learning in America, and have made a lot of good friends. Americans are warm, open, and welcoming. Despite that, as soon as I finish my degree, I'm going away and I don't expect to ever return. Thank you for your hospitality America, but living in fear of the INS is too draconian for my liking.
