This would be the case no matter what you buy. If you're posting on Slashdot, one would hope you have a clue about how the industry works. Two words: Moore's Law. Same for PC or Mac. Quit complaining about it.

Jesse Ventura used the net very effectively to get elected. On his current web site, he keeps an archive of his campaign promises and you can check to see that he's keeping all those promises. I don't agree with some of the stuff he's done (then again, I don't live in Minnesota, so what I think doesn't really matter there) but he is one of the most honest and straightforward politicians I've ever seen.

Keeping a permanent record of campaigns on the internet is a great way to keep politicians honest.

If Linux is ever going to be accepted by the masses as an alternative to Windows, it must have a graphical installer, and must, on the surface, appear to be as user friendly as a Mac.

In my experience, I have found that Mac users are the most open minded when it comes to Linux (probably the reason they tried something different in the first place) but are initially turned off by its complexity. If you make it seem simple enough to use at first, but keep all the power of Linux accessible to them, they will slowly explore and realize what a wonderful thing it is, but this is a slow process for many people who are not geeks.

When it came to choosing applications, Wordperfect seemed reasonable, but now they haven't updated Wordperfect for Mac in almost 2 years, and to maintain compatibility with others, I was forced to use MS Word. When it comes to spreadsheets, I never even had a choice. Excel has 95% marketshare on the Mac, and nobody wants to challenge that.

When Sun's new Office suite comes out, I will be the first on my block to install and use it. If it holds up after a month or so, I will comfortably remove the last remaining traces of MS from my hard drive, and what a glorious day that will be.

They are working on this new technology, and while there are still some bugs to work out, I believe human inginuity will prevail, and we will see this technology working within my lifetime (before 2050).

I predict however that there will be unforseen problems, such as disposal of waste... weird kind of pollution generated by the explosions... things that can't be accounted for until a working model is built. Of course when the working model is built, all will bow down before the solution to all the world's energy problems, and nobody will think to listen to anyone with a negative word to say.

In other news: IBM is now also making G4 chips (*with* AltiVec) which should help to get the G4s out the door faster. On the surface, TV and Internet might seem similar, but because they require entirely different mindsets to use, they will never be effectively combined.

Think about where you sit to watch TV... on your couch (usually) about 6 feet from the screen. Your computer is usually on a desk, in an office environment (even at home, its probably the same desk where you did your taxes before you got a computer). For years companies have been trying to cash in on this market that doesn't exist. Note the failure of WebTV (granted: there were other reasons that bombed).
