Yeah, I recently went through an entire interview process at a major corporation, got an offer, accepted, passed the bg check and then failed the drug test.
I toke up from time-to-time, but it had been almost a month since I had last done so.
It is their loss. I am a good, competent worker and I would have been a good fit for the team.
I hope that my type of statistic isn't overlooked by HR departments who are always struggling to employ qualified talent. There are plenty of people who puff a little on their own time who would never come to work impaired.
However, I think we need less drug testing and not more, so even though it doesn't benefit me, I would say that this particular proposal by this congresswoman should not proceed.
You have a beverage that is so hot that it will deliver full thickness (3rd degree) burns to the skin within seconds of contact.
In addition, the beverage comes in a flimsy cup with a removable lid and extra ingredients which the company clearly expects you to add to the beverage (sugar, cream, etc) after they hand it to you.
There is absolutely 0 warning, verbal or written that the contents of this cup will severely burn you if it makes contact with your skin.
Come on, everyone has spilled coffee on themselves at some point and not been burned so why would there be an expectation that this situation would be any different?
It's like handing someone who has only ever had experience with bb gun a shot gun loaded with magnum slugs and expect them to treat it with a different level of caution. Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but if you don't tell them, you have some level of culpability.
Changing your behavior does not alter the nature of the device. So no, leaving a mobile phone at home does not turn it into something else.
I don't leave my phone at home (unless I forget it) but I also don't take it with me everywhere I go. When I work out, I use purpose-specific devices (Nook e-ink for reading or Sansa MP3 player for recordings) instead of hauling a clunking phone with me.
Despite that, my phone is still mobile because I can take it with me when I want to.
Who cares about the "idiot" who gets rewarded? This is about holding corporations accountable for dangerous products.
It's sort of like a car manufacturer who makes a car without any safety features. If someone gets hurt and the company knew that they could have made a safer product but didn't, that's a problem that should be corrected.
The law suit is about correcting a problem that then benefits everyone. Forget about the fact that one person got some monetary gain (at the cost of severe pain and suffering). That's not important.
I am not a programmer by trade. I do like my Perl and PowerShell scripts though.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of opportunity to do large, complex scripts and so I will go for years sometimes without doing much more than a few loops and some simple arrays.
I will review code that I have written in the past, from time-to-time and I will think "man, you used to be smart!"... but really, all it takes is a few weeks of thinking in that mode again and I will fall back into it.
So, yeah... I am with most others here by calling BS... there are other factors here that we aren't being told.
Windows? -> Yes -> Can I use Batch? -> No -> Can I use Perl -> No -> Can I use Cygwin Perl -> No -> Use PowerShell Linux? -> Yes -> Can I use Bash? -> No -> Use Perl
I can understand the developer h8 (I guess), but for me, Perl is an indispensable language.
I was a hold-out as well. I joined FB mostly just to control my own narrative.
I created a profile and then posted a sort of "work blog" for a while in the form of pictures taken on customer premises (with permission, of course) with notations (like: look at this wiring closet before/after, etc).
I don't do it any more, but it really helped my job searches later on.
Can we please, please, please stop with the Clippy jokes?
I get it, you used a computer in the 90's and therefor have street cred...
The thing is, even at the time, Clippy was not that annoying. And anyone who knew how to install software, even then, could easily not install the stupid thing by doing a custom install and unselecting that feature.
Clippy was annoying, but we see WAY worse stuff these days anyway.
I used to be invested in MSN chat... then that went away.
Now I just have Google, Yahoo!, AOL and FB in my Trillian client.
I fully expect FB to go next, followed by Google. AOL doesn't have enough market share to be a bully so I am guessing that will be my new primary chat network (until they go under or get bought out).
One at a time, I will be dropping off chat networks. There is no way I am being railroaded into bloatware chat apps though.
That is odd. I am thinking it is your BT headphones that are the issue. I have had a Blue Ant X5 stereo headset for at least 6 years and have used them with every major device and OS.
By far the best compatibility has been on MS platforms. Most recently, I am using them on my Windows Mobile 10 phone and they work flawlessly.
And this is why I hate politics.
It's all just duplicitous maneuvering where nobody ever says what they actually mean.

Interesting hypothesis.
What would keep MS from creating their own bank or buying a bank?
Here's the deal.

I have found the same thing.
If you show up and talk to the prosecutor, they will often make a deal with you.
The problem is expectation levels.
Sure, everyone knows that coffee is hot.
However, most coffee drinkers have also had the experience of spilling coffee on themselves at some point.
There is never the expectation that spilling coffee on oneself will result in 3rd degree burns which will require skin grafts.
I have even had my fingers under a fresh stream of drip coffee come flow over my fingers and not been burned.
Why should I expect that a cup of coffee would cause severe burns? I wouldn't unless there were warnings on the cup stating such a thing.
HOW IS THIS ANY DIFFERENT THAN HOT WATER?
It isn't different.
If you haven't noticed by now, /. works by user submissions. User's have agendas and opinions and inject their views into their summaries.
You have to not be so pedantic and think about the intent of the story/news item and not worry so much about the slant in the summary.
You are looking at it the wrong way.

Trump could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody. And he wouldn't lose any voters, OK? It's like incredible.
Perhaps what is meant is that, while the same old text-based FB will exist, most of the content will be video.
It would be pretty dumb to completely remove text.
I mean, books are more popular today than ever, despite the availability of good, easily produced video.

I recall doing some work for a commodities trader at one point (about 10 years ago).
He was using Yahoo! and AOL messenger and needed a way to record all conversations that he and his staff were having while using these platforms.
I remember setting up a Jabber server as a proxy and did all the logging at the server level.
Anyway, it is interesting to hear your comment. Thanks for sharing.
A company "cares" exactly as long as it is run by 1 person.
After that, the company may be able to hold on to that image until that image comes into direct conflict with the needs of scale.
I am a sysadmin type and I decision tree is:
Windows? -> Yes -> Can I use Batch? -> No -> Can I use Perl -> No -> Can I use Cygwin Perl -> No -> Use PowerShell
Linux? -> Yes -> Can I use Bash? -> No -> Use Perl

Good news, your account will never be deleted only flagged as such....

Yeah, the endorsement thing is a little ridiculous, however, I thought that you had to first put those skills on your profile.
I will personally never endorse someone for a skill that I haven't witnessed proficiency in first hand.

you are right... not sure why I hit 4 instead of 3... my mistake.

I am going to take a wild stab in the dark and say it means "on the way" ?
And as we all know, your voice is your passport... totally unique... which is why we have so many voice-is-your-password authentication mechanisms....
Sure she could. But she didn't have to, so why would she?
Because we all know how well voice functions work.
This story could just as easily been "Woman saves child despite Siri calling her friend Annie instead of the requested ambulance"
She is lucky it worked out, but taking the 3 seconds to dial 911 would have been the safer choice, imo.
