I dumped Time Warner cable for DirectTV. TWC doesn't have anyone in their billing department that can add, my bill was never the same two months in a row for 8 years, mostly a few pennies more each month. With DirectTV I get more tha twice the channels for $2 a month more than TWC's expanded pack.
As for DRM: I have downloaded songs, most of which I already own the CD for. I use these to rip CD's with my own mix of songs and artists. Kind of like the party tapes many of us put together in the 70's using reel to reel decks, record a varied mix of songs by many artists to play for parties. DRM says I have to download this music because after Sony's rootkit I will never put a store bought CD in any computer. Yes I still buy the 2 - 5 CD's year that I actually like. The record companies don't put out more than that worth listening to.
The record companies are going to have to change how they do things, or die. All the arguments about downloading I have heard before when another technology was supposed to be the death of the record companies: the cassette tape! Some of the complaints are word for word what was said in the early 70's! Look it up some of it is hilarious.
I suspect that the "businesses" it's getting released to are Dell, HP, Gateway.... so that all the systems sold for Christmas will have the "new" OS. The thought of the tech support nightmare on Dec 26 is just sickening or hilarious depending on your point of view. This thing has had all the good stuff cut because M$ can't figure out how to do them and what is left is an OS released just because it's been to long since the last one. Still sounds like ME2 to me.
The ones that think they have privacy should check out the history of communications. Nations have been trying to break codes since the first written encrypted message, and succeeding. ATT's Bell labs designed the switches used for all telephone communications either directly or liscensed, world wide. They had a working relationship with the CIA. Why would anyone think things have changed? Is there a major nation that doesn't attempt the same things? No!
The incompetence of M$ has spawned an entire industry to fix the problems M$ can't be bothered with. You're right, that is a very shakey business model, if M$ starts fixing the problems. If M$ goes into direct competition with these 3rd party vendors without fixing the basic problems then we get into monopoly/antitrust questions. This really looks like just another way to generate income from a broken product.
It's kind of like the accountants and tax lawyers screaming about how bad a flat tax would be. The only downside of a flat tax is that they would have to find honest work.
Activation in XP is already a joke. All you need is a corporate key and you can activate anytime. M$ doesn't know the location of every corporate customers machines and as long as the number of seats paid for isn't exceeded you will get away with it. WGA is their way of fixing this "problem".
Airborne ebola, hmmmm where have I heard this before? Oh yea, read Rainbow 6 by Tom Clancy published in 1998. He covers what is possible when a group that thinks like this has a large bankroll. Of course he compares them trying to "save the planet" to the NAZI view of population control, but it makes just as much sense. These Druids talk like the planet is an organism of it's own, not made up of all the organisms on it.
I don't care how many nukes get set off, there will always be cockroaches!
There will be usable keys posted within a week of Vista's release. Just like there are hundreds+ of working XP keys now. If you get a corporate key, M$ doesn't know where that corp has all their boxes. How are they going to defeat this?
I don't really care because I will never use it but a lot of folks do care.
Since when does the marketing Dept of any company tell the truth? Especially when coparing their product with a competitors! This is everyday business and shouldn't even be news.
The Soviets did it alot more than once, this went on for at least 15 years. But contrary to popular fiction the sattelites seem to always recover. It just causes disruptions not failure. So far. Someone will eventually come up with a ground based weapon that will destroy a sattelite (not a missle).
Pick any major spending bill and see what gets added on, normally just before a vote and with limited debate. Any amendment that doesn't pertain to that specific bill is probably waste. It has been estimated that 3/4 of government waste occurs here. This is used as a form of blackmail of the President (party doesn't matter) If he wants his Defence, Human Services, Foriegn Aid, Farm, or whatever bill he has to sign the whole thing with tens to hundreds of waste amendments tacked on or get nothing. This is the reason people have tried to get the line item veto approved for the President. All Presidents want it regardless of party. There was an attempt to use one by Clinton and the Supreme court shot it down. There have been several attempt since then but it never passes Congress.
If it highlites all the ammendments that every single Congresscritter adds on to every spending bill that has nothing to do with the bill I will be happy. It has been said that this is where 25% of the spending occurs and it is all waste since they try to hide in the wrong bill.
Not only fast, but correctly fixed without creating more problems. How does that compare with IE? How about comparing the total number for both since Firefox 1.0 came out? Then compare how long it took to patch each one, IE will always look worse than Firefox because it is.
Due to the bi-partisan support of Diebold (nationwide, very partisan in each area), I would have to say they learned the fundamental lesson of American politics: Find out who you need to bribe and pay the hell out of them. Then advertise that any oposition is only party politics.
If anyone cared to fix most of the problems they would pass laws that allowed only people with valid photo ID's to vote. This would not fix everything, but it would help alot.
Like this is different from any other election? Look up what happened in 1960 in Texas and Illinois if you think 2000 or 2006 were the most crooked. The only difference was that Nixon refused to demand a recout because it would hurt the country and the last two don't care how much damage they do!
Why would anyone believe what any politician has to say? Anyone that is over the age of 20 and has paid any attention to the election process and what follows, knows without a doubt that a politician will say anything that will get a few more votes. Party affiliation has nothing to do with it, they all lie through their teeth. The proof? How many undelivered promises are there left from 2 years ago? Most were never brought up for debate in either house of Congress, just forgotten after the election.
Sounds like a very appropriate response. Illinois is trying to enforce an ill-conceived law and Spamhouse is within their rights in under the laws of the country they opperate from. I do want to see the judges reaction to this one, it should be worth a laugh.
This is exactly why online aplications will not replace ones installed on your system. I said that no business would use online aps over 10 years ago when Gates first suggested it. Businesses want total control over their data and will never trust a remote site they don't own. More and more regular consumers feel the same way.
China, North Korea, Cuba, and the old Soviet Union have all got the same problem, a paranoid fear of their people hearing anything that might actually be true. Everything must pass through the party filters first. It's ths same thing that every Communist Govt. has always feared, truth. Truth exposes all the failings of the system, in the West we read about failures of our Govt. dailey and sometimes even do something to fix the system at the ballot box, not often enough but at least we have the option.
In the U. S. this is an election year so fix the problem, vote against ALL incumbants! They are all on the take anyway, give someone else a chance!
I used a 2 character abreviation that happens to state exactly what "small & limp" (Microsoft) stands for, anything that brings in money, whether it works or not is meaningless.
Based on the fact that Vista will have been exploited seriously before it's even released. What M$ product hasn't been hit hard in the first week of release? I still have serious doubts about the ability of anyone in Redmond to spell security, much less do anything about it!
What is this guy smoking and why isn't he sharing? No matter what they claim it is still a M$ product and will be full of holes like all the others.
Windows is perfectly secure in it's native environment, pluged into a power outlet and a printer. If you connect to the internet you have no security.

I hope the DOJ attacks from here but I wish the FTC had fined them at least $50 million. If the fines get big enough crapware will get strangled.

If the members of the FCC board cared about diversity they would quit allowing mergers!
It really is that simple.

I was thinking of a ground based weapon that is not a missle. Either a laser or something similar. Lasers can do it, just not through the atmosphere.
