  2. Too much commercialization on The Disappearance of Saturday Morning · · Score: 3, Insightful

I remember saturday mornings from the 70's and 80's. ABC, CBS, and NBC would all have cartoons from about 6am til noon (and then the "afterschool specials" would start.)

I won't pretend that it was all great and there were no marketting tie-ins. I don't remember which came first - He-man action figures or the cartoon. I remember the saturday morning supercade - which was Pacman, Q*bert, Dirk the Daring and other video game tie ins when that was hot. I remember several cartoons based around the video craze at the start of MTV.

But it seems that the commercialization/advertising started to come first. Where He-man/GI Joe could probably stand on it's own, now it seems that if there wasn't a product tie in, the show would have never existed.

I don't know why NBC, CBS, and ABC got out of it. Perhaps they figured they'd make more money selling ads to gillette than mattel. Perhaps with the competition from cable stations digging into other profits, funding these cartoons was no longer profitiable.

I do know that while the old stuff may not have been the greatest (THe Snorks anyone?) the new stuff seems to be even worse. The animation REALLY sucks (oh...I suppose it's just being artistic in a way I don't understand) and I really don't like my girls watching too much of the stuff on Cartoon Network. The disney channel has some good stuff on - though sometimes it does get a little to edutainment like. Rolie Polie Olie is probably one of the best shows on now that reminds me of the old stuff...decent animation, interesting stories (well...as interesting as a show aimed for 3-4 year olds can be)

Oh yeah...my daughters current favorite - The Challenge of the Superfriends DVD I found at Wal-mart, followed by Scooby and Tom and Jerry - guess the old stuff still stands the test of time.

    Wow...I rambled...

I'll be honest and say that I couldn't find an answer on google to this problem either - well, actually I found lots of answers, just none worked - sometimes google has too much info :)

Yes...I have 20 year old software. Can't get to the media easily. And of some of the stuff that is older, be it 5,10,15 or 20 years old, some works, some gives fits, some made terrible assumptions about hardware and doesn't work at all. (okay...they are mostly games :)

But why should I assume that 5-20 years from now that piece of software I find will even work on whatever hardware (like you said - how long will they work?)

A VCR, DVD player, CD player are coupled - the hardware and "software" on/in them do not change. That's why I can take a 25 year old vcr and still use it.

Software solutions are not as well intergrated. Sure...what I have today works, but will that software be upgraded for the next release of the OS? DirectX or whatever release? How long until this software is left in an unworkable state because everything else has passed it by?

A damn good reason to make sure that if you do something it's standards based - I'm sure I'll be able to get updated software to play MPEG2's for Windows2006. I'm not so sure that something like the ATI VCR codec will be updated.

  10. Re:Oh, come on! on Gates on Digital Restrictions Technologies · · Score: 2, Insightful

Linux is an alternative to Windows - both running on x86. If x86 disappears and the replacement hardware can't run Linux (while technically possible, DMCA may prevent this from legally working), then you are left with MS and Apple.

Perhaps this would cause the apple stuff to be less pricey for us people moving in droves to PPC Linux.

Perhaps Apple would talk with Intel or AMD, who I'm guessing are not in MS's world domination plans, and like you said, migrate to X86, which would probably help keep the platform alive.

The trick is then selling it - because you know MS will do everything they can to beat the price.

And as much as people talk about consumers hating this and that - when it comes down to it, it's usually price point that makes them buy the worse product over the better.

  11. Sure...we can use pencils on Gates on Digital Restrictions Technologies · · Score: 4, Interesting

How long before MS decides that they will only provide windows for this thing and anything else doesn't offer the needed security? So, you can either use these or you can use something that doesn't run Windows.

Fine for a lot of people here, but what will happen is businesses will still want windows and office, so they'll buy into this, and hardware makers will look at the other stuff as a non-profitable niche market.

Because people own DVD players (Mpeg2). This is a physical piece of hardware - how old is your VCR? I know mine is 10 years old (the other is 13)

I believe the parent was equating MPEG4=DivX, and the software comes and goes quicker, and assuming that no hardware MPEG4 player is out, then your at the mercy of the software.

That'd be my guess at the meaning.

As another response mentioned, most of the tech support is relegated to helping people underline words, filter e-mail, or something like that. We have a whole bunch of staff to support that kinda stuff, and 2 people that maintain all the servers - Windows and Linux.

And our MCSE guy gets real nervous when I go on vacation. Personally, I think it's easier because it's almost all text files and is easier to see what is going on behind the scenes.

But my boss gets worried that I'll disappear or something and they have no support contract if something goes wrong.

Never mind we have no support contract with MS, and it cost when the exchange server just up and stopped sending e-mail...but that's point and click, so it is easier...right? :|

You can't find them at the stores, amazon, or anywhere, other than a footnote one a web site somewhere.

In this super-digital age, you'd think someone could do something to get them out there. I really need to go through some of my old VHS tapes (before they deterioate) and see what I can find.

Though it is sad that some of the stuff you can find is so damn expensive.

I could really care less about in image of Smurfette getting banged or something - big deal...that doesn't ruin anything. It ruins my opinion of humanity more, but oh well - it's kinda funny too.

In around '92 I started getting some again (a whole bunch of us in college got into it at once). I think I jumped in at the start of the demise.

Anyway, it got annoying that it seemed the stories were going to crap, there was less story because half the pages were "look at the splash" or "we needed three pages to draw her breasts". Also, every other issue was a "special" one with 20 covers, all special in some way. That's fine - I'd buy one copy (in it for the story), but that one copy's price would be inflated because of the special cover.

Other annoyances were the infinite number of cross-title tie ins, the infinite spin-off's and title involving a character (ie. Batman, Dark Knight, Detective, Bat this, bat that, bat screw the customer). Even Image was starting to get bad about this..and valiant to a degree.

In the end I just said enough was enough and stopped...oddly enough the only thing it did do was got me REALLY into Cerebus.
