Fine...you can ftp to ftp.mymachine.com. It costs me $500/mo for the T1 and $1000 for my ISP bandwidth, so the cost of performing my source distribution is $1500.
Or does the "physically performing source distribution" mean you have to burn them a CD make a floppy?
Record it - they are required to put you on their do not call list right on the spot (I've been told by telemarketers before that it can take up to 30 days, though the law says immediatly) and keep you on for 10 years.
read the article - it clearly states that it is a settlement to keep the case out of the court, where the RIAA will try to show logs and counts of songs and thusly they should be given $10mil to make up for imaginary lost revenue.
Well...it's getting there. And as more people are buying computer with intergrated video capture, downloading...err...ripping tons of MP3's, etc... that space will fill up quickly.
Give my wife a digital camera and she could probably take enough pictures in about 2 months:) (Yes...that is an exaggaration - it'd take her 2.5 months)
Still bad memories of my ATI card and the AMD on AMD I had 3-4 years ago (the shuttle hot-603 board - that they wouldn't link on their website cause of fear of reprisals from Intel).
Personally I'm waiting for the fixed MPX to come out.
Run standard stuff on it, AMD moves faster at a much smaller mhz.
Run stuff optimized for P4 on it, Intel now has the advantage.
Pay through the nose for Intel's latest and greatest.
So...whenever one of them releases a chip it comes down to do you run something that is intel optimized where you would get the performance boost? Also, do you want Intel on Intel, which'll work with 99.9% of stuff out there, or do you want to save a bundle and get AMD on Via/AMD/AliMagic/Whatever and have some possible incompatabilities?
Actually, this is an interesting case. Haven't there been companies that got in trouble with the USPS because they took their first class mail from city a to city b, put it in a box and shipped it via UPS/FedEx.
The USPS came down hard on them saying they are a government monopoly and you MUST use them for first class mail.
Uh...actually, he was not complaining about Tom and the Downs being cut out, but saying that since PJ cut them out, he shouldn't have needed mess with the book anymore, and should been able to put Galadriels gifts and other things in as they should have been.
I agree with you - it's a good adaptation, but then again, I also like the Bakshi version, and in some ways find it more "faithful", and find that PJ did some direct lifting from that movie in his.
Either way, I reread the books rather often as well, so I have become used to and tuned into deviations - which can be annoying, but oh well.
As long as Moria is done well, I don't care who does it:)
The question is - how much optimization can Intel force down everyones throats?
If everything is eventually Intel optimized, then the fact that AMD wins with non-optimized becomes a non-point.
But one thing you said brings up a good point: shows AMD trailing by only a couple points
Most of the graphs may show bars for AMD being twice as big as Intel or vice-versa. However, a lot of the benchmarks, the graphs may cover a rang of 10 points like from 270-280, with Intel at 271 and AMD at 279. So an 8 point difference looks huge.
Speed - Raw RAW SPEED!!!.. Enough said. Whoops Intels ass on a wide range of benchmarks
Yup...and when I need a machine for benchmarks, I'll go AMD:)
But beyond benchmarks, looking more at real-world uses, off the top of my head you have
Flasking a DVD
MP3 Encoding
Lightwave
3DS Max
Right now, most benchmarks put AMD ahead in the MP3 and 3DSMax render/encode times. The P4's are ahead in the LW and DVD times - because those apps have been written/optimized for the P4.
I'm not sure if 3dsmax 4.2 w/ performance pack (ie - p4 optimizations) will push that in Intel favor. And I'm betting that more and more stuff will start coming out "Intel Optimized" (gee...a new logo for boxes?)
For the average end user who just wants a computer to e-mail, play games, etc... AMD is much better bang for the buck.
I seriously doubt they are going down to Joes Pawn Shop and buying someones P133 and expecting it to run on that. Or even buying a Dell Dimension desktop for $1K.
PC servers have come a helluva long way. Hot swappable drives, power, pci cards. Remote management even without the machine being booted into an OS. I don't really see what our big HP boxes offer that our Dell poweredges don't offer, other than a builtin modem that goes into the diagnostic unit.
The HP is on software RAID1, the dell hardware RAID5. HP has 4G of RAM, Dell has 2G, but can go up. Both have 2 CPU's. Both have hot swapable drives. We had a power supply go one the Dell, and have had a memory carrier go on the HP. HP required downtime.
Your argument makes sense for people ditching high-end workstations for run-of-the-mill desktops to do the same thing, but not for going from a high-end server to a high-end server class of machine.
The costs still add up on the PC servers, but not as high as on the big Unix boxes.

Still overkill. Why do I need to move around, jump, look at things to see them?
Instead provide something like Netmeeting (that works with multiple people) - or basically any voice chat. Wanna see the presentation, put it on the common chat area, or at least a link to it.
Then again, I guess if you have a QIII engine and a crappy video card and don't follow the directions in the presentation, you can always claim that it was rendered different on your machine.
It's not that I don't think it'd be cool - just kinda counter-productive.
I can now have one OS on one machine. I no longer need a Linux and Win box. Or if I dual boot, I no longer need to interuppt productivity just so I can see what stupid attachment HR has sent.

Gee...go after the co-workers with a sword or M-16. Give a whole new angle to team-killing.
Seriously - sounds like overkill for having a meeting. Then again, I can run around in Doom and kill processes on my machine, so each to their own.
"User *BANNED* from server for TKing Networking Team"
See boss...the server won't let me in, but this 24/7 Overlord server did.
you forgot on the plus side:
.conf files for config instead of registry or god knows what
- can upgrade web server without OS reboot
- uses simple
C:\Program Files\Apache> apt-get install apache
'apt-get' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
C:\Program Files\Apache> apt-get install php4
'apt-get' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
So I now have apache with php support?
It really is a shame that tools like that don't just work on Winders. Then again
apt-get install secureMSwebserver
would probably crash the OS.
Well, looking at the /. headlines, I would say that Google Web API's are ranking up there pretty high :)
I think it was in "Pryde of the X-men", a half-hour cartoon, where not only does he talk with the Aussie accent, but he refers to Dingos as well.

Yes, because all CD burners are sold to make discs full of illegally downloaded music
Bull. I use mine to make discs full of illegally downloaded software and movies.
First thing I though of when I saw the ship.
Probably a little more eco-friendly that the SeaQuest was, but gotta love the design
Not a bad idea...make it out of a native element.
:)
Lets send a probe up there to get a sample so we know what is native and in what amounts
Couldn't resist. Then again, for all we know, our passive means (radio/infrared/xray) may also be having an effect.

This is what is needed. Disk space is getting huge right now. Floppys don't work for backups anymore :)
Not many people can afford a DLT library to backup their 200GB of data.
The way it's looking, a hotswappable drive might be the cheapest backup solution in the long run...yikes!

The bullets do the killing, unless of course you bludgeon them with the actual gun itself.
But all the same - take away everything capable of committing a crime, and the world would be pretty boring.
But the downside is sometimes you get some pretty shitty packets.
