I have no problem supporting my parents, siblings or other direct family members. I'll even help my inlaws - they have a Mac...not bad.
But my mom got the bright idea of offering me to help one of her friends with their computer - a dialup issue - I hate modems! Anyway, when I got there, I swear that anything you can download off the internet was on their machine and their system tray was about 60% of their taskbar.
I fought through it and got it working again. I tested several times and then shut the machine down and had them go through it without any help to make sure they could do it. My mom mentioned in passing a week or two later that it stopped working. Fortunatly their son-in-law (who as out of town the first time) was going to look into it. He had to be nice to them:)
I don't like the fact my neighboors know what I do for a living. One of them just likes to ask all kind of open-ended questions, one at least has us over for dinner when helping her, one expects me to get a machine with OJ spilled on it working.
Oh well...at least it gets me free pizza once in a while.
"Uh...where I went to school we had a novell network. You put this novell client on your machine, put your name and password in and it just worked! Perhaps that would work for us here at xyz Widgets."
Oh...I forgot to mention that in all honesty, most are probably paying for the OS that comes with the machine and then paying again in their tuition. We advise them to order without office to save the money.
Find a place you can buy a OS-less notebook and you can save your $45, if the vendor allows it.
They can afford to give it away. As someone else wrote, it is also a tax break for them.
But it is also advertising. Students at the school don't see novell at all anymore, they see Windows and AD. They get used to this, they learn it. When they graduate, they know it. They go other places and ask why it's not there or help to bring it there because they know it.
With the Microsoft Campus Agreement, campuses license Windows and Office at a flat fee based on the Full-time enrollment equivalant. At our campus of 6000 students, it works out to cost about $8/student/semester. That $8 gets then the OS installed (9x/ME/2k/XP), and the Office Suite, and a couple of other things, like Visual Studio. When they leave the school, they get to keep it as well. Yeah...we pay for it, and the students pay for it, but for what is basically $16 a year, they get the OS and office suite with free upgrades. On the other hand, the amount the campus pays has gone up a couple times.
Probably because a movie is 1.5hrs (if you're lucky), whereas games are something they can be at for days on end. Therefore they must have a lot more influence.
Also, some games do things that movies fear to do because of protests...look at how easy it is to shoot someones head or limbs off in GTA3. Only movie I can remember off the top of my head (no pun intended) graphically decapitating someone is Starship Troopers.
I just wish I could buy the extra dvd's from the "collectors" extended edition seperately. I'd like to see the Gollum DVD and the National Geographic one as well, but am not paying $20 more just to get some figure that'll collect dust.
I've been playing video games for a long time (and I still suck at them.) I remember playing Pong on some tv console thing in the mid 70's. I remember early arcade games (very abstract:), and I've played my fair share of FPS's.
Other than some motion sickness caused by FPS's, I don't think they've affected me at all. It's a way of blowing off some stress from time to time. Just because I may get in GTA and start picking off random citizens doesn't mean I'm gonna find an M16 laying around and do the same thing in real life - never mind the fact that my aim is even worse in real life than in a game!
The only violence that I can think of that could be attributed to video games happened in the early 80s. And even then it's more of a parenting thing. We had an arcade in a strip mall. Some teen girl was in there while her parents had gone to the supermarket. She left the arcade with a couple of guys who raped her. The arcade then instituted a policy that if you were under 16, you had to have a parent in there with you. Pretty much killed their business. We used to ride our bikes up there just to play games. After this happened, it was a ghost town in there. And it wasn't the games or the arcades fault.
My daughter seems more than happy to print out the greyscale stuff and then color it herself...which is good because I refuse to spend the money for a color cartridge for my 8 year old printer only to have it dry up in a month.
My next printer (probably to be bought when this one's cartridge goes dry) will be a laser printer. I'd rather pay up front, have a faster printer that can take my daughters abuse (Dora didn't print when I clicked the printer so I hit it again - go and look and a) the printer was getting the data from the computer and b) again translates loosely into "20 more times" )
LOL. As long as they don't have the huge always open eyes:)
I suppose they could modify things a bit and turn Bombour into some super-hunk of a dwarf:) I'm betting they do try to get some sex-appealing star for the role of Bard though.
Interesting. A good point, as there is a point in book where Gandalf does somewhat suspect Bilbo and the ring. Regardless, other than some omnious music, the Ring should not play that much of a role in The Hobbit other than Bilbo using it.
But in "A Long Expected Party", Gandalf comments about how he has hardly aged...which makes me think that in The Hobbit, Bilbo should look about like he did at the beginning of FotR.
If they are gonna try to get the Ian's (Bilbo and Gandalf) they had best get a move on before something happens - they are neither getting any younger. The only other person who would need to return would be Hugo Weaving (Elrond), but I don't think he'd change too much over a couple years.
Of course, Andy Serkis would need to reprise Gollum, but he should look about the same, even though time hasn't been good to him so far:)
I do wonder if they would want Ian Holm as Bilbo or not. While I think he did a great job in LotR, the filming of another movie where he is the main role may take quite a toll on him.
Also, I would think they would want to try to reuse The Shire set that they built before it gets overgrown with weeds. And there is also the Rivendell set which they should probably reuse.
It should be used as in the book - a harmless trinkit that makes Bilbo invisible. The story is not about the ring, which wasn't really in the picture as being this huge ring of power when Tolkien wrote the book. The story is about Biblo going from some weed-smoking country boy to an adventurer.
As long as we don't have to listen to Elrond going on about how man can't handle things.:)
I switched to nVidia due to the "quality" of the ATI drivers for Windows. nVidia was much better. This carried over when I made hardware decisions for a couple of non-linux server boxes I have (ie. mythtv). Even though I have quite a few ATI cards laying around, I probably won't even try then. Time to make modern art with them.
Actually, when I was in college (late 80s, early 90s), the mainframe still used that term. I think it was also in one of our theory of programming language classes or something like that.
And sadly, yes, I did spend two years in hell doing cobol programming.:)
About the only time I have trouble in windows without a mouse is some piss-poor designed application. Anything that follows any sort of normal windows UI standard works fine.
Besides, everything seems to have a windows key now, so hit that, run and cmd:)
Actually, the article said that it was understood that the guy owned the site, not the sherrif dept.
Either way, the guy shouldn't have decided that "yeah...I did this for 3 years and it cost me, even though I said I'd do it." now I want you to pay me.
A better solution would have probably been to say "can't do it for free anymore...start covering my cost or I'll have to shut it down." Shouldn't offer something for free and then expect to get paid for it later.
Difficult, but not impossible. Get the AVRIL from your base.
The problem I find is that the base will be under attack and you need to get another node, yet everyone gets in one of the vehicles at the base and dissapears on the map.
My biggest peave is the idiots who jump in the truck and fly out of there without any gunners. Dumbasses.

In Georgia we have GALILEO, which is for any student in Georgia or anyone with a library card in a public library.
Not to many people seem to know about it, but when you can find something on it, it works great.

Why is this new printer so heavy?
:)
They've gone from a plastic case to a lead based case so there can be no "interference" from outside sources

While I'll agree it's my first place to turn for Linux help, it can sometimes be hard to determine what someone else may have called the sme problem.
Did the program "break execution", "abend", "dump core", "crap out", "stop working", "fault in the xyz subroutine"?
Sometimes the word one person would use would be completely different than another.
Or, if you simplify your search too much to avoid the above, you get so many hits, most not relevant.
But hey...it's still better than the MS Knowledgebase for the most part.
From the article:
Simmons said the Web site included a disclaimer that said it was owned by Running Wolf Inc.
"The sheriff's department never disputed that fact when the site was up," Simmons said.
Looks like there is some dispute on this
Actually, the article said that it was understood that the guy owned the site, not the sherrif dept.

I'd love for them to expand on this so I can call out the weapon I want instead of trying to scroll or hit the right key.

Then again, it is rare to find good teamwork.
