Return of the King Coming Sooner to DVD

daveewart writes "According to the BBC, the DVD for the third installment of Lord Of The Rings will go to DVD quicker than either of the first two parts of the trilogy. It is scheduled for release on 25 May, with the usual 'extended version' to follow 'at the end of the year'." Ya know, I feel like a month after I buy the extended version, they'll release the super-trilogy version with more footage.

How can you say that, when you already have evidence they will pull this if possible - remember Fellowship? The first DVD has a bunch of extras that the extended edition did not - you'd have to buy both for completeness (I didn't though, just extended).

If nothing else, the final trilogy edition should have all material from all releases!!

I'm holding out for the final trilogy rather than buying either the normal or extended ROTK. Then I can at least make an informed choice.

I don't think it's fair to call Lucas a money grubber and the turn around and idolize Peter Jackson. Lucas is demonized more than he deserves (I'm not saying he doesn't deserves some of it, just not all), and possibly later Jackson will be, for the things that movie people just do to consumers - because they work really well.

In fact if anything you have to admire Lucas just a little, with some part of purest intellect, for not releasing DVD's of the real original trilogy and then a seperate special edition with the updated footage. Instead Lucas is sticking by his principals at all costs to make sure you never see the original films on DVD, only his recast version. Now that might be evil, but it's certainly not money-grubbing!

LUCASFILM REVEALS DETAILS ON NEW "SUPER-TRILOGY" DVD SET

Mill Valley, CA (Reuters) -- Scarcely had the awards celebrations ended for "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" when word leaked on a revised and extended version of the classic film trilogy. It has been confirmed that George Lucas and his wizards have signed up to produce a new, "kid-friendly" version of the fantasy set in Middle Earth. Preliminary work has already begun, and industry experts expect the DVDs to be available in time for the Christmas shopping season.

"Parents should love this new DVD set," enthused Penny Wise, a Lucas spokesperson. "We've toned down the scary parts to make it more acceptable for younger viewers. And test audiences have told us the new, streamlined plot is more understandable."

Critics are already complaining about changes to the story and characters. "We know what we're doing," Wise counters. "We feel we have an excellent grasp of what Tolkien would have created, had he been a contemporary screenwriter instead of a Cambridge don. While George (Lucas) admires the original books, the new version will become 'canon' for the current generation of children." Informed that Tolkien taught at Oxford, not Cambridge, Wise sniffs. "Whatever."

    GOLLUM UPGRADED

Perhaps the most controversial change to the epic is a new, "improved" Gollum character. "With all due respect to Andy (Serkis)," an insider explains, "his character was just too scary for our target audience. Robin (Williams) brings a whole new dimension to Gollum. Some of his scenes are hysterically funny!"

And what about early reports that Eddie Murphy had been signed for the role of Gollum? "I can't comment on the particulars of his deal," says another source. "But Eddie was definitely on board with the Gollum revisions. Everybody loved making him portly with floppy ears."

When quizzed on the terms of Murphy's leaving the project, insiders refuse to comment. There are persistent reports that Murphy bolted over a recurring line of dialog: "Meesa loves the precious!"

    MORE UPBEAT ENDING

    Other changes in the works:

    * As homage to Chuck Jones (of cartoon fame), Gandalf's fall into the balrog pit is now punctuated by a moment's teetering on the edge, followed by a barely audible cry of "Mother" as he falls into darkness.

    * In his greatly-truncated final scene, Boromir now sheaths his sword, sticks out his chin, and taunts the orc leader, "Take your best shot!"

    * Trimming both running time and violence, the new finale features all the creatures of Middle Earth -- humans, elves, hobbits, and orcs -- joining hands and singing to celebrate the destruction of the ring. An alternate version of the tune will be available on the audio CD, sung by Celine Dion.

Other aspects of the new project could not be confirmed at deadline. Groundbreaking ceremonies are expected this fall on a new "Mount Doom Adventure" ride at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Peter Jackson, the famous director of the original films, could not be reached for comment. Officially, he is in seclusion working on his "King Kong" project. His publicist refused to comment on reports the director had taken to drinking heavily.

If you truely think that New Line and Peter Jackson are not out to liberate as much cash as possible from you FAN BOYS, then you need to age a few years, and become wise to the world of motion pictures.

Let's just see, comparing to your list, there already is:

FOTR VHS Fullscreen, FOTR VHS widescreen, FOTR VHS Special Extended Edition, FOTR DVD Fullscreen, FOTR DVD Widescreen, FOTR DVD Special Extended Edition, FOTR Special Edition Collectors Gift Set, etc. etc.

Now multiply that by 3, one for each movie, plus add in the FOTR/TTT dual-packs, the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK Box Set, the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK Super FANBOY Collectors edition box set, the HD-DVD single and box sets, etc. etc.

All released within about a 6 or 7 year timeframe.

Tell me that is not the Hollywood Cash Extraction system at it's finest. New Line and PJ are all playing the game that GEORGE LUCAS INVENTED, lifting plays directly from his book of marketing genius, just compacting it all into a much shorter timespan.

Lucas released various versions of HIS films (let's not forget that - Star Wars and Raiders were HIS stories, not someone else's that have been LICENSED), and put them out as the technology for viewing them at home changed over the course of the last 20 years. Plus he went back and fixed up some bits YEARS LATER that were primarily deficiencies that he viewed as technology related. Not this 'Oh let's just jam out multiple versions within MONTHS of each other, and rake in the cash' plan that New Line and PJ have cooked up.

And you can bet your ass that the whole FOTR series, just like Star Wars and any other franchise, will be released as each new video technology is made publicly available, just as has been done with Star Wars over the years.

Hell George even held off on releasing DVD versions of Star Wars and Raiders for YEARS. You don't think he could have jammed out a half dozen other editions/versions/boxed sets since DVD has been available? Please.

New Line is whoring out LOTR -far- more than Fox/Lucasfilm ever has with Star Wars. They are taking George's master franchise concepts and compacting the timeframe, so they're that much richer, while they're alive.

Also, let's not forget about The Hobbit, and all the extra versions of that on the way, plus the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK/HOBBIT Master Ultra Goob Save Your Allowance for 10 Years Box Mega set.

Don't give me this PJ is less of a money grubbing whore than GWL B.S. At least George is peddling his own wares, and not somone else's.

King Kong anyone? Sure PJ, we can make some bucks off that one that's been done a half dozen times over already! Sign up the marketing drones and watch the cash tumble in!!

Wait, if they plan to release the theatrical one in May, then the extended in Nov-Dec, doesn't that mean my dream version won't come by at least until MAY 2005?

They'll release it in May or whatever, follow up with an extended version in September, and they'll then be able to release the trilogy box set super collectors edition in time for christmas. :-)

I hope Peter Jackson has enough time to make an all inclusive DVD set whereby there isn't really a Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King, but a whole series combined where you can't really tell that they were different movies. Plop in DVD 1 finish on DVD 6.
