Return of the King Coming Sooner to DVD
daveewart writes "According to the BBC, the DVD for the third installment of Lord Of The Rings will go to DVD quicker than either of the first two parts of the trilogy. It is scheduled for release on 25 May, with the usual 'extended version' to follow 'at the end of the year'." Ya know, I feel like a month after I buy the extended version, they'll release the super-trilogy version with more footage.
Rent the first one out. Buy the super extended version at the end of the year. Netflix should have it.

Everyone just needs to admit that they want a super extended version. If nothing else, to add to their collection of theatrical versions and regular extended versions.
I know I do.
The way Peter Jackson has been handling things, he doesn't seem to be a money grubbing a-hole like Lucas. The amazing amount of extra footage that was released with the Extended Editions has to be atleast MOST of what they have, if they managed to come up with extra footage I'd be surprised.
I doubt the Trilogy Edition will have any extra material (what, it's already going to be 6-7 DVDs!) other than maybe one or two special features on the trilogy as a whole (ie. life after LOTR for the cast, etc)
I think that these kinds of movies should be released as a subscription. You could pay so much a month or a large one time fee and just be sent every version or "update" to the movie and in return receive a pricebreak. I can't keep track of every release these days for every movie set I want. It's becoming fanatical and I feel like I'm collecting Beanie Babies or something trying to find every release or even come up with the money for them.

The one box set to rule them all?
Just a note. When I posted the parent, the topic didn't include the words super-trilogy. My post made more sense then.
Ya know, I feel like a month after I buy the extended version, they're release the super-trilogy version with more footage.
:P
I have a $100 gift certificate for amazon.com that I refuse to use until that "super-trilogy" comes out. I need to check the fine print though and see how long teh thing is valid
You're welcome to your own opinion, but why "own" anything? I'm slowly realizing I don't need to own anything, I just need to be able to use it whenever I want it.
It's much better. It's somebody else's responsibility.

same here... no point buying it as they come out, and then buy the trilogy as well. I can live with the divx ones until the Trilogy boxset comes out. THATS when I buy them.
Ya know, I feel like a month after I buy the extended version, they're release the super-trilogy version with more footage.
Man... you've got problems... anything we can do to help?

At least they have the decency to tell people beforehand that they are releasing a special edition. A few years ago my brother, who's an avid collector of DVDs, bought Reservoir Dogs. Inside the DVD was an advertisement for Special Edition which was coming out in a few months.
Personally, I'd buy a lot more DVDs if they were upfront with their release schedule. There are too many movies I want to buy, but just can't because I don't know when, or even if, they are going to be releasing special editions. I wonder if the number of people who hold back on DVD purchases for this purpose balance out the number who buy both editions?
I went and saw RoTK yesterday. No intermission. Oww oww oww! Watching it on DVD with a well-stocked fridge and a pause button is the way to go.
One line blog. I hear that they're called Twitters now.
Unless they pull a "Terminator 2" or George Lucas, that is. Videophiles know that there must have been half a dozen or more versions of Terminator 2 and Star Wars out in VHS, laserdisc, and DVD. (Terminator 2 had the...let's see...VHS box set, special edition laserdisc, then the regular DVD, then the "ultimate" edition DVD, then the "extreme" edition DVD, etc.) Let's hope that New Line doesn't release a new edition every time it needs additional revenue.
There are a huge number of yeast infections in this county. Probably because we're downriver from the bread factory.
Im sure i have read before that peter jackson stated that the trilogy edition WON'T have any new film footage. Im still kind of dubious myself but I guess I'll have to wait and see....
End of the day, I'd rather they release the theater version first and release the extended version when they are able. I'll rent the normal version, watch it a few times, and then buy the extended (or super version) when it comes out. I do hope tho they announce info on the super trilogy version before they release the EE ROTK. If they release the EE of ROTK and then 5 months later announce a super trilogy version I'll be pissed. I just bought Two Towers extended a few days ago, pretty happy with it!
Sounds like around Xmas 2004, they'll have the SuperExtended DVD Box Set of the Trilogy, with MORE added features per movie. This is what I've been saving up for as the movies have gone to DVD. From a marketing standpoint, it's all logical.
Any idea/anticipation how much they'll sell/gouge for the Box Set?

you know it's going to be released... they are going to milk this cow until it bleeds.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
Wonder if any of the box sets will include gollums acceptace speech at the MTV movie awards.
Now that's an extra I'd pay money for, I mean, who expected a cussing and screaming gollum calling peter jackson a bastard. Now that's entertainment.
From inside contacts:
Included in the trilogy boxset, would be 3hr segment featuring the art of elf pr0n. Starring: Liv Tyler.
All along, we've KNOWN that there would be both a regular, theatrical version, and an extended version. Peter Jackson simply wanted to put so much more in that he couldn't get away with showing in theaters (since after all, the longer your movie is, the fewer times you can show it a day.)
They've delivered on that promise, and they've also promised that any future releases, such as an entire trilogy box set, would have no new content. Peter Jackson isn't being "revisionist after the fact," he simply knew along there was just too much content and the movies were already too long, and they have to draw the line somewhere. Just because Lucas wants to update his movies ever 10 years doesn't mean Peter Jackson is GOING to.
If you didn't want to buy two sets, you would have known all along to wait for the extended version. Now, if the HD-DVD version has added content, people would have to be crazy to complain. Theres no way i'm going to wait until HD-DVD is out to buy a copy of the movies, so I'm just going to buy the extended now, and HD later.

I finished the edit before I came over here - these poor bastards at Weta have got another 350 effects shots to do! They're well on the way. Elijah's seen the extended cut. New Line have announced some box set that's supposed to be coming out which I didn't know anything about. Before we start hunting down another directory for selling out, remember much of the reason that the extended versions were delayed was to give Jackson time to finish them. They were not just the ususal "hey look at this footage I found on the floor, lets edit it in" directors cuts but completely scored and sometimes relooped versions. This takes time people.
Will there be a boxed set, of course. New Line wants cash. Will it be anything more other than interviews and other box set stuff you watch once or twice and move on? No. Jackson wants to do something outside of Middle Earth for a while (even if it is just a large stinky ape).
Today is a gift. Save the receipt.
I'd recommend to the New Line guys to release a new LOTR DVD every month, each one with 1 minute of additional extra footage.
People would still buy them, and maybe it will provide enough incentive to create a fourth and fifth part. How sure can you be that the Saurus guy is *really* gone?
And BTW if Gandalf has those cool eagles that he used to rescue Frodo at the end, why did he not use those f&*%^ birds to bring Frodo on that damn mountain and save at least one hour of my life that I wasted watching that crap?
Ok, enough rant for today.
Informative... the mods are on crack again. The Hobbit isn't even off the ground yet - Jackson only just confirmed that it would be done in the future.

Ya know, I feel like a month after I buy the extended version, they'll release the super-trilogy version with more footage.
At last week's post-award show, Jackson did state that New Line was working on a box set, and that he had only found out on that day (so it was without his knowledge or input). He will try to convince NewLine to wait, as he would love to work on a boxset once he's done work with KingKong. If that's the case, a boxset would be 2-3 years away.
It's better to burn out than to fade away
On March 4th this thing had already hit the internet as a two disc dvd rip (check vcdquality's web site). I figured that I would have heard it all over the news sites over the weekend, but I guess it's under the news' radar. Who is the MPAA going to blame this copy on? Looks to me like it is a insider leak as usual. The copy is a full rip including 5.1 surround and complete menu structure. The speed at which it was leaked is amazing, still in theaters and before the DVD was even mentioned to the public. Is suing a 12 year old going to stop this?
It seems like they've been pretty up front about the whole issue though. It's not like they waited for people to buy the first one, and then released the extended version, they said initially that they were going to do it, and then those people who couldn't wait or didn't want to spend as much money could buy the regular version. What they've done has made sense...the standard for the average person, the extended for the more die-hards. Wait until you have grounds before you start bitching. A boxed set is to be expected, and it will probably have some extra stuff, but I doubt it will be anything of real worth (a retrospective of awards and the experience without bonus footage or anything). Of course that'll still be worth it to the super die hard fans. Anyone that's complaining about all the releases of a movie...it's their problem if they feel that they're deprived from missing out on those extra couple minutes of inevitably irrelevant stuff, or paying all over again for them.

You know, not everybody needs / wants / absolutly has to have the ultra uber extended super dolbey 5.1 thx remix 4 disc set of the lord of the rings.
There's a large enough segment of the population that is happy with the standard, no frills DVD's that New Line has decided to release it. They're probably aiming that version at the rental market in the first place. If I were only a passive fan of the films, I'd have been happy with the 19.95 wal mart edition. No one has a gun to my head forcing me to buy every DVD version that comes out.
As for the box set of all three, is there really enough material to make it worth while? the two box sets that have come out already have had more than enough extended footage, and you can only take so many 'behind the scenes' documentaries before it all just runs together.
There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell 'em.
the Super Duper Ultra three movie set, 10 DVD's with 300 hours worth of extra's...
I simply won't waste money on individual copy's of trilogy's when you know that there'll be an edition with even more stuff on it out for the holidays. And what about The Hobbit, if that movie gets made will there then be a twelve DVD set of all four movies with even more extra's...
Another great example is Indianna Jones, it seems that even if the fourth movie is delayed that there will be a fourth movie sometime.. what about all those people who went out and bought the complete Indianna Jones set, it won't be complete anymore after the fourth movie's released.
No they won't release a longer version. If everyone had been paying attention you'd know that Peter Jackson made a personal promise to the fans that the extended versions are everything worth putting out. He promised he wouldn't pull a Lucas.
Just downloaded and watched the full DVD release... The movie company should release it earlier. It just reeks of cash cow milk when they obviously have it all done but hold onto it. :-P
The Funny thing is, that you'll probably still be able to see it in major theaters someplaces in May when it will be coming out on DVD.

I watched all the discs in the Two Towers containing extra footage (though ironically, I still haven't gotten around to watching the movie yet). And I have to say, do they really need three discs worth of extra junk? They start repeating themselves after a while and I find that I'm seeing the same scenes of Peter Jackson standing on some wind-swept moor in his shorts and jacket. It's a great scene, but do I really need to see it three times from three different angles? While there's some great stuff on the discs, they could easily have shrunk it down to one two-hour disc of extra stuff.
Yow. I'd buy that extended version.
Quite. In fact, it might never get off the ground since while New Line has the rights to make the film MGM has the rights to distribute; not good. Let's face it, if you were negotiating on behalf of MGM, your goal would be to get as big a slice of the pie as possible. Lots of films have never made it because of lesser issues than bickering lawyers with a scent of tens of millions of pure profit. All we can do is hope that common sense prevails over greed, and how often does that happen in Hollywood?
UNIX? They're not even circumcised! Savages!
Depends on how much you get charged to "use it" each time. If you think you'll watch the trilogy once a year on JRRT's birthday, and it costs you $10 to do so, it won't take too many years to pay for owning it.
On the other hand, they might "find" even more footage, or put it out in a superior format. Which makes renting it more attractive.
I'm looking forward to an edition 10 years down the line when they enhance the special effects. Some of those scenes where they use the midget actors are really terrible.
It'd be cool if they could fix those bits using digital effects at some point.

Since there is a lot of talk about Jackson making a prequal, (aka 'The Hobbit' ;-) this might provide a oppertunity to also generate new LOTR related footage too, for the 'bumper mega extended edition' that would follow.
Just a thought, just occurs to me that if you're filming in a 'Middle Earth' environment, possibly with some characters, like Gandalf, on set and in costume. Then doing a few small but important 'filler' shots for a even longer LOTR version is possible..

Is is coming out so quickly? The obvious answer is because they aren't working on another film simultaneous to producing the EE. But it does occur to me that when there is a lag between a cinematic release and the issuing of the DVD quite a few people feel justified in downloading in the mean time as they fully intend to buy the DVD when it comes out. If this is the case then it will reduce the number of pirate copies DL'd, but not really impact on the rate of what we might call "real" piracy (copying something with no intention to ever buy it).

Next time you pull something like that, make sure you put A SPOILER WARNING in your subject. Now I don't have to see it at all. Thanks a lot.
According to Peter Jackson, each film would have exactly two versions. The theatrical cut and an "extended edition" (which he makes sure to often differenciate from a "directors cut"... he considers the theatrical version to be the director's cut")
He explicitely stated he disliked what he called "money-grubbing" from having many different versions of films. He always stated that the two versions of LotR dvds were aimed at different markets, and weren't intended to overlap.
Of course, PJ probably has little control on what NEw Line packages, so I could see them putting out a super-special package, with all three films (possibly one each for theatrical and extended edition). The could possibly contain more special features which were left on the cutting room floor.
Of course, time will tell if Peter Jackson lied about making another, "final" cut of the films.
This is my prediction. 1 and 2 seem almost certain, since they are nothing more than repackaging of the trilogy as a single item.
1. A boxed set of all three theatrical films, in a keepsake case (like the EEs come in).
2. A simple boxed set of all three EEs, (with possibly nothing more than a box for the three individuall EEs to go into).
3. A boxed set of all three EE which will include every "bonus" special feature from the EE deluxe editions (i.e. "making of gollum", "national geographic specil".) These will probably also a new figurine from WETA.
Anyone who even barely follows dvd releases will know that a super box set is already in the works. Even if you don't follow the information you could have made an educated guess. Personally I don't care. The extended editions are fine for me.
Just rip the DVD under linux with DVD::Rip, youll get some titles not accounted for; most likely these are Easter Eggs. This is the best way of finding Easter Eggs, no damn searching and clicking.
It's always pissed me off that LucasFilms suckers their customers into buying multiple copies of a DVD by never telling us what they're working on and how many versions of a film will be released. So you buy the original on VHS. Then you buy the enhanced on VHS. Then you buy the enhanced on DVD. Then the original on DVD. Then the uber-boxed set on DVD.
At least Peter Jackson has the class to say "there will be two versions released, and this is the date and this is what it will contain." Sure we'll see a boxed set at some point but at least I've been able to get by with buying only one copy of each because I knew exactly what releases to expect, well in advance. It's almost like... like... respecting your customers or something??? Very odd, I wonder if this will catch on?
I don't know if this holds true for many others out there, but my friends and I believe that by buying these multiple versions we are also "voting with our wallet"... Not only will we get enjoyment out of watching the standard DVD until the EE comes out, but New Line (and other studios) will see the revenue that comes in when they produce high-quality films of this genre. PJ's rep will be boosted as will the actors', etc.
/. community has often talked about "voting with the wallet" by not buying things -- but the opposite also holds true.

Um, because that's the type of cheap shit that the studios do to get more $$. Instead of offering the extras to people who purchased the first DVD (and can prove it, such was w/ a mail in rebate coupon) for a lot less $$, they'll charge the same.
Then they have the fucking NERVE to complain when movies are being copied and no one wants to buy them. Puhleaze. I know I won't be buying either. I'll rent/borrow mine and copy them.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie and I'm a huge fan, but don't fucking pull that "Special Edition" bullshit as if it takes you time to put it together (no more than a month or two). Quit ripping us off and we'll quit ripping you off

Jackson doesn't do crap like that. From the first movie, you knew that the theatrical version would come out 6 months later, and the extended was coming out after that.
Sure, there might be a bundled version in a year or two with all three versions, but Jackson won't add stuff to the film.
If it were lucas, we'd have staggered two month releases of:
LOTR - VHS version
LOTR - VHS widescreen version
LOTR - VHS "THX" widescreen version
LOTR - DVD
LOTR - VHS Special Edition
LOTR - DVD Special Edition
LOTR - DVD Movie of the Year version
LOTR - VHS Extended Edition
LOTR - DVD Extended Edition
All of them not announced until the previous version had been snatched up by burned fans.
The way Peter Jackson has been handling things, he doesn't seem to be a money grubbing a-hole like Lucas. The amazing amount of extra footage that was released with the Extended Editions has to be atleast MOST of what they have, if they managed to come up with extra footage I'd be surprised.
How can you say that, when you already have evidence they will pull this if possible - remember Fellowship? The first DVD has a bunch of extras that the extended edition did not - you'd have to buy both for completeness (I didn't though, just extended).
If nothing else, the final trilogy edition should have all material from all releases!!
I'm holding out for the final trilogy rather than buying either the normal or extended ROTK. Then I can at least make an informed choice.
I don't think it's fair to call Lucas a money grubber and the turn around and idolize Peter Jackson. Lucas is demonized more than he deserves (I'm not saying he doesn't deserves some of it, just not all), and possibly later Jackson will be, for the things that movie people just do to consumers - because they work really well.
In fact if anything you have to admire Lucas just a little, with some part of purest intellect, for not releasing DVD's of the real original trilogy and then a seperate special edition with the updated footage. Instead Lucas is sticking by his principals at all costs to make sure you never see the original films on DVD, only his recast version. Now that might be evil, but it's certainly not money-grubbing!

I agree with the authors last statement. I'll buy the trilogy for my wife, then they'll release the ultra mega-sized version gold delux edition boxed set, with talking characters, and hologram covers.
I am Bennett Haselton! I am Bennett Haselton!
I have not rented or purchased any of the LotR DVD's simply because I want to BUY the trilogy as a set. The same goes for Matrix. I have not even seen M3 yet because I want to wait and enjoy the entire experience as a whole.
Does anybody else wait on purpose?

Jackson has said that if it's up to him, the only other edition to come out will be in a few years when HD-DVD becomes the standard (read my earlier posts).
There is no other extra footage to add. What you get in the Extended Editions is it.
Jackson, however, has little control over what New Line does. They may release a box set, but I doubt they'd do that without Jackson's OK.
It's better to burn out than to fade away
What karma-whoring? This article is about the ROTK DVD. You didn't provide the link for the 2xDVDr, now did you? Just some crappy DVD-rip. My advice? Get the 2xDVDr instead, just 9 gigs :)
Well... I won't post any links here. You guys are probably clever enough to find it yourself, and I don't feel like helping the MPAA taking it down.
And if any MPAA suit is reading:
I will buy the extended edition when it comes out. Meanwhile I will watch this evil pirate version, which I insist on not paying for.
Not Buzzword 2.0 compliant. Please speak english.
Surprisingly untrue. Read this interview from a few months ago:
Q: What's the definitive version of these films?
JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions. I regard the extended cuts as being a novelty for the fans that really want to see the extra material.
You're wasting your money. Hold out for "The Making of the Making of the Making of the Special DVD features"

For those that cannot wait, here is what your May 25th purchase is going to look like when you pop it in.
I just wish I could buy the extra dvd's from the "collectors" extended edition seperately. I'd like to see the Gollum DVD and the National Geographic one as well, but am not paying $20 more just to get some figure that'll collect dust.
Retail Widescreen DVD-R has already been released for those in that particular scene......
...if this has anything to do with this leaking to the internet?
(disclaimer: I have no idea if it's real, but if it is...well, it would make a good case for getting the retail version into stores sooner rather than later, I'd think)
Extended Trilogy version, Now with "Tom Bombadil"
If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people
You *all* are wimps. Back in college, we would have marathons of drinking and football watching. Get a case of beer and a pair of Depends...first one to stand up loses.
Meh.
Back in *my* day, we'd watch marathons of The Prisoner. Seventeen hours plus one more for the alternate "Chimes of Big Ben," on a fourth generation PAL to NTSC transfer.
It wasn't a physical endurance challenge, but it was a hell of a mental one. By the time we got to "Fallout," we didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
LUCASFILM REVEALS DETAILS ON NEW "SUPER-TRILOGY" DVD SET
Mill Valley, CA (Reuters) -- Scarcely had the awards celebrations ended for "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" when word leaked on a revised and extended version of the classic film trilogy. It has been confirmed that George Lucas and his wizards have signed up to produce a new, "kid-friendly" version of the fantasy set in Middle Earth. Preliminary work has already begun, and industry experts expect the DVDs to be available in time for the Christmas shopping season.
"Parents should love this new DVD set," enthused Penny Wise, a Lucas spokesperson. "We've toned down the scary parts to make it more acceptable for younger viewers. And test audiences have told us the new, streamlined plot is more understandable."
Critics are already complaining about changes to the story and characters. "We know what we're doing," Wise counters. "We feel we have an excellent grasp of what Tolkien would have created, had he been a contemporary screenwriter instead of a Cambridge don. While George (Lucas) admires the original books, the new version will become 'canon' for the current generation of children." Informed that Tolkien taught at Oxford, not Cambridge, Wise sniffs. "Whatever."
GOLLUM UPGRADED
Perhaps the most controversial change to the epic is a new, "improved" Gollum character. "With all due respect to Andy (Serkis)," an insider explains, "his character was just too scary for our target audience. Robin (Williams) brings a whole new dimension to Gollum. Some of his scenes are hysterically funny!"
And what about early reports that Eddie Murphy had been signed for the role of Gollum? "I can't comment on the particulars of his deal," says another source. "But Eddie was definitely on board with the Gollum revisions. Everybody loved making him portly with floppy ears."
When quizzed on the terms of Murphy's leaving the project, insiders refuse to comment. There are persistent reports that Murphy bolted over a recurring line of dialog: "Meesa loves the precious!"
MORE UPBEAT ENDING
Other changes in the works:
* As homage to Chuck Jones (of cartoon fame), Gandalf's fall into the balrog pit is now punctuated by a moment's teetering on the edge, followed by a barely audible cry of "Mother" as he falls into darkness.
* In his greatly-truncated final scene, Boromir now sheaths his sword, sticks out his chin, and taunts the orc leader, "Take your best shot!"
* Trimming both running time and violence, the new finale features all the creatures of Middle Earth -- humans, elves, hobbits, and orcs -- joining hands and singing to celebrate the destruction of the ring. An alternate version of the tune will be available on the audio CD, sung by Celine Dion.
Other aspects of the new project could not be confirmed at deadline. Groundbreaking ceremonies are expected this fall on a new "Mount Doom Adventure" ride at Walt Disney World in Florida.
Peter Jackson, the famous director of the original films, could not be reached for comment. Officially, he is in seclusion working on his "King Kong" project. His publicist refused to comment on reports the director had taken to drinking heavily.

buy the dvd as soon as it comes out. [you know you want to, you MPAA loving sonofabitch]
i ng-at-each-other dvd release comes out, download the new bits with something like BitTorrent. you'll have paid for the movie, and if you feel "dirty" for getting the extra bits of crap they should have included with the first dvd in the first god damn place, buy some songs from an online store or something.
when a theres-5-more-minutes-of-the-same-two-people-star
paying for the same thing twice isn't just stupid: it's American.
The logic:
...oh, yeah,
1. Release FOTR/TTT to theaters near Christmas
2. Release the DVD the November after, to stimulate interest in its sequel to be released to theaters the month after
3. Since there's no sequel, release ROTK to video EARLIER
4. Release all three in "collector's editions" in time for Christmas 2004
5. ???
6. Profit!!!
I was watching the first one the first one last night quite late because it has to go back to the library today. It got quite late and I realized that this thing was going to be around forever. It didn't matter if I how much a saw in one session; it's never going to go away.
It will be around in fifty years like Beatle records and Star Wars videos. It doesn't matter if the DVD comes out this month or next; it's still going to be on the shelves when your an old man.
I hope they make a version of the box for people who have already bought all the other extended editions. Anyone familiar with anime DVDs will know that many times the last or first volume of a series will come with a box to hold the remaining volumes. What they could do is have a "super-extended" boxed set for those who waited and for those who bought the extended versions when they were release they could have a box that would include DVDs with whatever content the "super-extended" adds. I doubt the extended versions of the films will be touched but there may be behind the scenes features that may be added. Here's hoping some companies think of the fans.
Highlander is another that they keep re-releasing in different "special packages", with little indication of any additional footage since the original Director's Cut 10th Anniversary release.

I'm only on hour 47 of the first two...
10 years from now, when Peter Jackson completes The Hobbit and New Line Cinema comes out with "The Lord of the Rings: Super Extended Special Ultimate Criterion Quartet Edition" with all 4 movies and 10 full discs of extended footage from all the assorted single-movie releases.
/sarcasm
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, START
and what about the extended version...
eof
Forget the super extended version trilogy - wait until after the Hobbit is released and get the super duper extended quadrilogy. (which will still be obsoleted if/when PJ tackles the Silmarilion).
If they release the super-trilogy version a month after I buy the extended version, there won't be a super-trilogy version.
It may be just rumour, but after stating a very similar opinion (about "oh, you just KNOW that there will be a super-extended version"), a buddy of mine informed me that Peter Jackson has said that will not happen. The extended versions will be it, other than stores possibly shrink-wrapping the 3 extended versions together.
... EXCEPT for Peter Jacksons' extended versions. It's really horrific how every new box set and DVD release is a mess of bad copies, bad 'remastering', and just awful quality for DVDs that cost upwards $40 range.
;)
:D
I even liked the extended Two Towers MORE than the theatrical release! Though I still like the pacing of the original Fellowship of The Ring. Notice there aren't any other DVDs that cause this distinction within the breast of the sagacious DVD auteur.
Thanx to Peter we now have the only DVD movie releases that deserve an award as much as the movies do... and got.
I'd love to see Peter Jackson rework these films.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the movies, but some of the effects were bogus. Don't know if it was time, money, technology or all three. I don't expect a remake in my lifetime, so how about revisiting it every couple of years to tweek/update as technology evolves.
Having just rewatched the extended TT DVD last night, I couldn't help but cringe at the funhouse ghouls in Frodo's Dead Marshes plunge. What's with the dead/cursed == green glow? (seen again in RotK).
If MS, Adobe, etc. can get away with annual upgrades, why not a franchise like LotR?
Yes, it's true. This man has no dick.
And I'm willing to spend top-dollar for it.
:)
And if they have super-trilogy boxed sets with figurines, they better have some without figurines that sell for $50 cheaper
I don't think Peter Jackson will be crazy enough to do a new edition of all three movies for a three-movie box set that will be longer than the current Extended Edition movies (3h 30m for Fellowship of the Ring, 3h 45m for The Two Towers, and 4h 15m for The Return of the King).
What we'll probably see are additional documentaries on the production of the movie beyond the six Appendices discs from the three movies.
Are we talking about skinny elvish, or fat elvish?
I've been waiting since the first one came out on normal DVD for the Super-extended boxed Trilogy. I figured that if there was anything special on them I'd get it, and if not, I'd have already watched the (regular) DVDs by borrowing them off of friends.
Of course, even if they don't put extra footage on the DVDs, a nice promotional item would still go down well. A cloth map of Middle Earth, rr an Elf-English Dictionary, maybe? Even a token guesture like that would make me feel rewarded for waiting patiently.
Not long to go...
"I think everyone is an agnostic but just doesn't know" - Frazz
I prefer the theatrical and rent the extended for novelty. I think it is interesting how fans of Star Wars are mortified by the release of a Star Wars that was not theatrical (which I am as well) but waits with anticipation for more footage from Jackson. I agree that the extra footage is good but there is an art form to making a GOOD movie that runs ~120-180 (or in LOTR a bit longer) minutes. If you can have unlimited content then you have left the realm of a movie.
By comparison, in the seven or so years DVDs have been out, not one George Lucas movie has gotten multiple DVD releases (unless you count separate widescreen and "fullscreen" versions of otherwise identical editions). American Graffiti? One DVD release to date. More American Graffiti? One DVD release to date. Radioland Murders? One DVD release to date. Willow? One DVD release to date. Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace? One DVD release to date. Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones? One DVD release to date. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? One DVD release of each to date, in a boxed set combining the three. THX 1138 and the original Star Wars trilogy? We're still waiting, though all those should be released this year. The only George Lucas or Lucasfilm production to get multiple DVD releases is Labyrinth, and that's principally a Jim Henson movie, not a George Lucas one, and not controlled by either of them (since Henson is now dead). Yeah, there used to be lots of versions of everything Lucas in the days of VHS and laserdisc, but that era's over, and so far in the DVD era, none of Lucas' films have gotten multiple DVD versions for fans to buy and then buy again when the better versions come out.
People are always complaining about George Lucas inundating fans with successive upgraded video releases, but Lucas has nothing on Sam Raimi in this regard, given all those squintillions of Evil Dead discs...
I heard that in the boxed set, during the battle of Helm's Deep an orc shoots first.
...how lame is that??
>>You're welcome to your own opinion, but why "own" anything? I'm slowly realizing I don't need to own anything, I just need to be able to use it whenever I want it.
You bought into Divx (The DVD format, NOT the codec) didn't you?
Don't park drunk, accidents cause people.
The new LOTR Trilogy now comes with a concise Programme Guide (the novels), 40 MORE minutes of extra footage from EACH movie, including the uncut scenes of Frodo and Sam staring into each others eyes for 10 MINUTES!
If you act now, we'll also throw in a BONUS DVD with 8 hours of commentary by Peter Jackson about how awesome it is that you bought this version.
Did we mention the new inflatable Arwen doll, which comes in every Super Extended Box Set?
Finally, as if that wasn't enough to get you to buy it again, send in two proof-of-purchase seals and we'll send you a genuine bladder clamp and cathedar set, for that in-home theatre experience! Add your own stale popcorn, and you'll relive those memories again and again.
hmmm - i must've missed that part in the book.
TO late. done have it.
Thanks Centropy
After the release of The Hobbit, by that time CG should have improved dramatically.
Peter Jackson should use the opportunity to re-render certain scenes from the previous two movies. For instance, redo Gollum in FOTR using the new Gollum model (something he's already stated he'd like to do) and fixing a bunch of Gollum's movements to make him look more realistic (he fits into the scenes, but sometimes he still looks very clearly inserted and not real). Also, redo the Wargs and Ent attackfrom The Two Towers--they look like ass (and Peter Jackson agrees, if you listen to the audio commentary...those scenes were rushed at the last minute).
By the time this imaginary box set happens, the new high-definition DVD format should be out allowing four times current resolution...imagine zooming in just to examine Gollum's skin shaders. *geekgasm*

I kind of felt like I was watching a butchered movie when I did finally see RoTK. I could almost pick out the parts that would be in the extended version.
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
If you truely think that New Line and Peter Jackson are not out to liberate as much cash as possible from you FAN BOYS, then you need to age a few years, and become wise to the world of motion pictures.
Let's just see, comparing to your list, there already is:
FOTR VHS Fullscreen, FOTR VHS widescreen, FOTR VHS Special Extended Edition, FOTR DVD Fullscreen, FOTR DVD Widescreen, FOTR DVD Special Extended Edition, FOTR Special Edition Collectors Gift Set, etc. etc.
Now multiply that by 3, one for each movie, plus add in the FOTR/TTT dual-packs, the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK Box Set, the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK Super FANBOY Collectors edition box set, the HD-DVD single and box sets, etc. etc.
All released within about a 6 or 7 year timeframe.
Tell me that is not the Hollywood Cash Extraction system at it's finest. New Line and PJ are all playing the game that GEORGE LUCAS INVENTED, lifting plays directly from his book of marketing genius, just compacting it all into a much shorter timespan.
Lucas released various versions of HIS films (let's not forget that - Star Wars and Raiders were HIS stories, not someone else's that have been LICENSED), and put them out as the technology for viewing them at home changed over the course of the last 20 years. Plus he went back and fixed up some bits YEARS LATER that were primarily deficiencies that he viewed as technology related. Not this 'Oh let's just jam out multiple versions within MONTHS of each other, and rake in the cash' plan that New Line and PJ have cooked up.
And you can bet your ass that the whole FOTR series, just like Star Wars and any other franchise, will be released as each new video technology is made publicly available, just as has been done with Star Wars over the years.
Hell George even held off on releasing DVD versions of Star Wars and Raiders for YEARS. You don't think he could have jammed out a half dozen other editions/versions/boxed sets since DVD has been available? Please.
New Line is whoring out LOTR -far- more than Fox/Lucasfilm ever has with Star Wars. They are taking George's master franchise concepts and compacting the timeframe, so they're that much richer, while they're alive.
Also, let's not forget about The Hobbit, and all the extra versions of that on the way, plus the inevitable FOTR/TTT/ROTK/HOBBIT Master Ultra Goob Save Your Allowance for 10 Years Box Mega set.
Don't give me this PJ is less of a money grubbing whore than GWL B.S. At least George is peddling his own wares, and not somone else's.
King Kong anyone? Sure PJ, we can make some bucks off that one that's been done a half dozen times over already! Sign up the marketing drones and watch the cash tumble in!!

They'll release it in May or whatever, follow up with an extended version in September, and they'll then be able to release the trilogy box set super collectors edition in time for christmas. :-)
I hope Peter Jackson has enough time to make an all inclusive DVD set whereby there isn't really a Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King, but a whole series combined where you can't really tell that they were different movies. Plop in DVD 1 finish on DVD 6.
