  1. Re:No more cars on How Will We Get Around Near-Future Earth? · · Score: 1

I'm all for public transport. However the main problem with a lot of the US is the urban sprawl. There is talk of a rail line from Macon, GA to Atlanta. This would stop right by where I work. Sounds great - except I have to to drive just as far as I do to work to get to where the closest stop would be.

Or you have MARTA in Atlanta. It goes basically North, South, East and West. If you destination isn't by a rail station, you can transfer to a bus. However, you have to wait around for the bus and try to decipher the schedules and routes. NYC on the other hand has subway all over the island for the most part. You may have to switch trains, but it is all one system that is pretty easy to get around.

Until it becomes as easy or convienent to take public transportation as it is to take a car, it's not gonna fly. Why should I go through the extra hassle and cost?

I agree with you - until it is super easy for me to get an item without going to the store (now now now!!!) people will prefer to drive. I'd even accept 2 days, but it seems it takes weeks for packages.

However, there are some shows that I download because I can't see them. They are shows that come on the BBC. Sure, Coupling I can see a few seasons later on PBS if I'm lucky, but some other shows never make it over here.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I would pay to have the BBC channels. BBC America does not cover it. I want the real live feeds. I wonder why no one has done this yet. I'm sure they could charge enough for a package to make more money than the TV license would generate.

When I was growing up I remember WTBS (Atlanta, usually offered nationwide now) used to do something like this - shows started at 8:05 or 8:35, so if you watch one show on TBS, you may as well watch the next one as you've already missed the start of anything on the other networks.

As for the 40-minute shows. They had a "supersized" Scrubs - normally the shows are 20 minutes without commercials. I think Scrubs (supersized) was 23 minutes without commercials.

I like the idea of my computer auto-detecting any network printers. I don't have my printer linked up to the network as I don't have time to try and figure out how to do it.

I do to. But I also want the ability to say "you're wrong...do it this way" to the computer.

I think you are in the minority. If the printer is currently down then you can't use it so configure it later when you CAN use it.

For home users, this may not be an issue. For an office environment, it may be. There have been a few times dealing with printers where part of the support group is out unboxing them, putting them in place, assigning an IP to it, while the network group is setting the servers up to have that print queue. It'd suck if there were 20 of these and we had to wait until they were all unboxed and setup to add the queue, or get interrupted to do each one as it's setup.

Sure...have the ability to say "I don't think this is the option you are looking for" but at the same time, allow people to override any auto-detection with the caveat that this may no work if you don't know what you're doing. Just don't force them to be at the mercy of the wizard programmer as to what should happen in the real world.

How will it just work if it cannot connect to the network interface?

The point was, I believe, that the wizard may not be smart enough to recognize every type of connection. For instance, if the wizard was written by someone who never say anything but Linux, there may be code that looks for ethx. But on HPUX it's lanx, or whatever Solaris calls its interfaces. Or what if my only connection is a ppp connection (dialup or VPN) and it isn't connected at the time I'm setting it up. Again, it's about saying "this is what it looks like to the wizard, but if you wanna igore those assumptions, go ahead at your own risk."

They user doesn't care about how difficult it is behind. If it's badly designed then it will be system dependant and a support nightmare. It will need a bit of thought in the design, that's all.

    Amen brother.

And it isn't just Linux - printers on any Unix system (or any system at all) are ridiculous.

The catch is that my $5,000 item I just sold you is also under the GPL, so you can make a thousand copies and give it free away under the GPL. Or you can make your own mods and sell it or give it away.

So, no, there is nothing that says it has to be given to the public, but it is designed in such a way that once it gets to someone who is willing to give it to the public, they can, so the original company may as well just go ahead and do so.
