    Get an AoL account (Not gona happen with me.... Snowflake, hell.. ok?)
    Sign up to a Microsoft develupers list (Ahem, Not gona happen, Snowflake, hell.)

    "Accadentally" click on the spam report button.

    Or better yet post this suggestion on Slashdot and let thousands of Slashdotters do it.
    (PS Better if you already have an AoL account and develup Windows apps)

    Then let Microsoft and AoL fight it out. And chear on Microsoft...

  4. Why I stayed out of IT on U.S. Students Shun Computer Science, Engineering · · Score: 1

    I get this question every now and then and once was subjected to a psycopathic rampage over it...
    I refuse to join the IT workforce.

    I have considerable technical skill that I use on a regulare basis.
    This leaves people to ask why I won't join the IT workforce.
    (One lady actually accused me of being a fraud over it however I believe her rampage has more to do with whom I called my friends than anything else)

    The reasons I give are as folows:
    1. I don't have quite as much technical skill as I appear to have and I certenly don't have as much as those whom I'd have to compete with for work.
    2. Nobody seams to take Brainbench sereously and I let my certificates expire.
    3. I can't stand stupid n00b questions. I like kids but they don't insist the computer is possesed by a demon when they forget to plug it in.
    4. Even tech support people suck when I try to help. I don't think normal tech support has half as much problems as I do at getting people to work with me. In short yeah stupid n00bs but also Baka Me. I think I don't communicate clearly enough.
    5. Cat piss in desk drive. No I'm not joking this actually happend and a repair shop owner told me the story of what happend.
    (I make my own repairs.. I just buy the parts from him)
    6. There are some repairs I couldn't do on MY computer. How am I to repair other peoples systems if I can't fix my own well maintained box?
    7. Hate Microsoft Products..... Burn Burn Burn...
    8. Windows confuses me. Let me expain. I learnned command line I know command line I don't know GUI. GUIs usually don't confuse me but they do make me into a n00b. Windows confuses me.
    9. I run a small business. I sleep all day. This is fun.
    10. I will not now, never did, never will sign a Non-Disclosure agreement. It's an offence against God (and I mean root not any deitys) and Man (Not man pages but the ugly bags of mostly water that we are).
    And the work I usually see is the work I do.

    I don't need to fight with you peoples for work I'm fine.

    Why would you need an open source Java?

    No binarys for the current libarys,
    No binarys for the current kernal,
    No binarys for Dragonix (The home made portable/PDA Linux system)

    Not asking for the world here. Just want to compile for the system "I" use.
    (or systems in my case)

    Otherwise this leaves me singing "I ain't got no Java, No Java for me, No Java, I'm so sad and lonely, No Java for me" and I sing really really bad. Trust me. I'm sending SCO Darl Macbride a tape.

    Quite a few people think MyDoom was writen by someone at SCO after faking no less than two DDoS attacks.
    If anyone outside of SCO did make MyDoom to actually hurt SCO they are in the running for a Darwin award considering SCO has faked at least one DDoS and caused a second internally.

    And why attack SCO once and then leave em alone? A sereous DDoS wouldn't have stopped attacking SCO.

    Why would a Linux coder use Visual Basic?
    The Visual Basic programming environment is pritty expensive and the avrage Linux coder wouldn't know how to tap into it from a typical Windows install.

    Why not use GCC? It's what Linux coders usually use.

    Based on some of the comments it appears the website was down before anyone got a chance to visit it (let alone mirror it)
    It appears what happend is something like this:

    Slashdot posts a story... Guy who runs website has a paid subscription to Slashdot.. and ohh his meager website is... OH CRUD.

    shutdown -h now & exit

    Hay a safe shutdown beats a crash any day.

    So let's Slashdot The Internet Archive Horray...

    The Vic20 did have a "bit map" mode BUT it was generally preferable to use text graphics at the time.

    Also Space Invaders uses text graphics. Each alien is a character but instead of being represented as a letter the characters are aliens.

    When Epics copied (stold) Roage they just ported the old game to the lower end computers and changed the character maps. Otherwise it's the same game.

    And two words: ANSI Graphics.

    In computers: Graphics = Pictures, Text = Letters, numbers, etc.
    Text graphics = Images represented in text.

    Nothing new :)

    Not needing to register each work simply puts the burden on the "fair use" user.
    There was a time when regesturing the copyright cost a postage stamp and if we return to compuslry regestry we should also return to the no-fee reg.

    You are right it dose put the burden on the end user. One of the big nightmares of PD programmers in the past was some dipwad regesturing something they wrote and suing the actual author.
    (Some clame this actually happend but I file this in the myth file as I have no proof)

    I am reminded of some of the lawsutes that came about shortly after the current system went into place. Individuals clamming they are the actual authors of a movie theam soung for example.
    The entertainment industry has writers who submit matereal sign a waver before they'll even look at your stuff to avoid nasty lawsutes.
    (This was in place before the current copyright rules BTW. I'm remined of "Trubble With Tribbles II" nastyness where a writer contacts a staff writer with his idea while a similar idea is already in production)

    Slashdot news storys... Thies short blurbs are not creative efforts but simply news commentary. Big deal.

    I don't think $1 renwal is a good idea. Under the old system it was "The life of the author plus .." I forget how many years past the authors death.
    There was no fee involved (I'm not saying sending stuff to the copyright office is free or even cheap becouse of the paperwork involved) in the old system.
    But it was "file paperwork and send it off"....
    Again IANAL But I have a Nolo Press book published in the 1980's when you had to regesture everything you wrote.

    If I had a kid (and I won't.. really my nightmares involve me having to deal with myself. I don't want a kid like me around)
    I'd reg his name as a domain name and give it to him when he is able to maintain his own website.

    Only I would never do business with thies guys.

    My plesant dreams involve companys like this going under.

    Now I can have nightmares where they go under and my kid asks me what happend to his domain name...

    Not nessisarly practical but intresting.
    I can see walking into a log caben and finding a computer in a woden case, woden monitor and woden mouse and keyboard.

    Might also work for a CEO who wants the building done in wood motif.

    Remember back when IBM hired some marketting reps to premote Linux and they used grapheti?
    Sounds like Microsoft saw this and copied it. Anyone notice how the only thing Microsoft copied from Linux is also something illegal?

    Ok sure Linux beat Microsoft to the inovation.. This is NOT the sort of inovation you brag about.

    And now AMD is doing it.

    isn't Microsoft THE defacto standard?
    That is part of the problem.

    Microsoft usually dosn't offer alternitives but instead breaks the existing standards on Windows.
    Most people only get to see Java, HTML etc etc etc from Windows so develupers have no choice but to folow Microsofts standards instead of the W3 specs and Sun Java specs.

    When ever someone complains about Microsoft not folowing the standards they say "(Insert Microsoft Product) IS the defacto standard".

    Only now it's an Apple Product.. the iPod.
    Not just Mac users but users of ANY Os that isn't Windows will be ever so happy to rub Microsofts nose in it... Even those Linux users who still think the Mac is overpriced junk.

    Who here is deluted enough to think Microsoft won't try to levrage it's desktop monopoly into this?

    However when it comes to music players and online music stores Apple has the monopoly potental not Microsoft.
    It will still be intresting to see what Microsoft trys to pull to make this happen. What FUD will they lauch at the iPOD? What functionility will they break in Windows?

    What will Apple do? Sue? Adapt? My money is on BOTH. If Microsoft modifys Windows to break iTunes I think Apple will send in the techs and legal team at the same time.
    They'll sue Microsoft for the R&D needed to make iTunes work and to keep Microsoft from pulling it again. And they'll put the best techs on the job... Outsourcing to India? Hell Outsource to every corner of the globe. Who's charging THE MOST today?

    Google dosen't just have text link adds on Googles website. They also have ads on OTHER peoples websites and pay those websites for that.

    With out banner adds or pop ups (Thwap the guy who called Google ads POP UPS) you'll need some software on your server to make this work.

    Im guessing this guy hacked this software so he can send bad any data he wants and is expecting Google to act like Microsoft and pay to keep it quiet.

    He picked the wrong target. Find a defect in Windows.. a nasty one.. and bribe Microsoft to stay quiet. They appear all fine with the extrotion scams and all about security by obscurity.
    (I'm joking BTW.. Try that and Microsoft will thump you something nasty AND clame your defect is fraudulent)

    If this becomes the norm the folowing long term effects will result:

    Large news sights like Slashdot will grow smaller and it will be more a thinly distributed link accrost many websites instead of one main source.

    Then websites will be slashdotted from 1,000 diffrent websites instead of 1 and we'd have our Distributed Slashdot.

    Websites will still go down the stairs and be protected from the terrable secret of space.

    People can use the IE/OE combo without too much fear as long as they keep auto-update running.

    Or they could use ANY other e-mail client with out updating with no fear at all.
    This isn't rocket science. It's an e-mail client. It's pritty hard to screw this up.
    E-mail is text. Viruses are programs. Before text becomes a program you have to support a full programming language in the client. What kind of idiot dose something like that?

    There is one good reason..
    Like Internet Explorer it's part of the OS now. You'll kinda mess things up.

    For users who want an industreal e-mail client Eudora is far better than Outlook anyday.

    Also some users (*Cough* Rush Limbaugh *Cough*) complain that the massive amounts of e-mail they get kills most e-mail clients.

    As Unix experts learnned long ago Pine has no such problems and there is a Windows version.

    Mahogany is annother full featured e-mail client that could easly drop in replace Outlook in most cases.
    And it's open source.

    I think people go out of there way to suggest Mozilla mail over Eudora becouse Mozilla is open source.

    But... Mozilla is a web browser and EVERYTHING takes a back seat to that. Including the e-mail client.
    If any e-mail client outside Microsofts own Outlook were to support viruses it would be a browser based one and Mozilla is not immune.
    Highly unlikely true.. but it's the MOST likely cannidate.

    Scribe looks intresting for corprate e-mail.

    The point being here there are quite a few alternitives and it might be worth your time to check them out before advocating a client change to your friend or boss.
    You'll go a lot farther if you advise a client suted to the needs, environment and culture of the target.

    The sad thing is the parent is both a troll and insightful.

    The Unix experts have been saying for decades now that using a secure operating system will protect you from viruses.
    The anti-virus industry would have you believe Unix was never populare enough to make this possable. WHAT A LOAD OF BS.

    Unix was THE operating system for mainframes in the 1970's and 80's.
    So they adjust the excuse "Oh well virus writers are only after desktops"... Wrong again.

    First what is a virus?
    According to The Dirty Dozen it is "The Ultimate Trojan Horse".
    What do hackers do with trojens?
    According to the book "Outside the Inner Circle" (By Microsoft press) trojens are used by hackers to gain more access to the servers they already have low level access on.

    But to use the trojen you need to hack into the system to start with. Wouldn't it be great if you could trick a system admin (or better yet user) to install the trojen for you?
    Thats what a virus is. That is what it's for. Every script kiddies wet dream has been for the last 2 decades a Unix virus.
    And we don't have a Unix virus yet becouse the virus writers don't have any motivation to write one? Bull.

    Outlook is just one example of just how sloppy Microsoft really is when it comes to software design.
    Download and install ANY other e-mail client and you won't need to fear e-mail viruses. That's easy enough isn't it? You don't even need to install a new OS just use a better e-mail client.

    Before the Gates Foundation was set up I remember hearing quite often how "If Bill Gateses money (blah blah blah)" and speculation about how Mr Gates could put an end to world hunger with his pocket change.

    Politics: While Mr Gates was busy dealing with anti-turst this and monopoly that he no doupt was being harrassed by nonproffits looking for money.

    We all know Mr Gates could have pulled out chump change tossed it at them and said "I did my part" but I think he desided to NOT go that way.
    It's not that the man isn't byond buying goodwill quite the reverse he'll do it in a heartbeat BUT he has to actually do something.
    The vast majority (maybe all) of those people knocking on Mr Gates door aren't actually doing anything for the poor. They are collecting money and collecting paychecks. They don't product results.

    Those non-proffits wanted to convence Mr Gates to give them his money but instead they convenced Mr Gates to help people himself.

    And then pump the public for goodwill points.
    But to give him credit he isn't just throwing money he's making a sereous effort to get results.
