  1. Re:So many hours.. on Metal Gear Solid for GameCube Announced · · Score: 1

Actually, if you look at last months profits for all three systems, PS2 and XBox are down, while Nintendo surged forward. Don't underestimate the power of older gamers that want to play Metroid and Zelda again...
Nintendo still has a very large crowd (its just the PS and Xbox has most of the teenage market). And now that the 'cube will be only $99, expect even more people to jump on the bandwagon.

  2. EXCELLENT! on Metal Gear Solid for GameCube Announced · · Score: 1

I almost bought a PSX just for MGS. I didn't end up getting it, but I do have a 'cube, so this is a great game to have ported (I'll be in line when it comes out)!

And having Miyamoto oversee the production? Expect to have the extra 'fun' factor put in (the guy is a sheer genius, but I don't have to tell you guys that)!!

If you like Deus Ex, go to your local eb, fork over $5, and buy a copy of System Shock 2. Its the same 'style', just a different story (and its an older game, but also was made by warren spector). Basically, you can choose between 3 professions, and give attributes out, just like Deus Ex, but its a much spookier game (well, it starts getting freaky after the third or so board).

Every person that enjoyed Deus Ex I suggest buying System Shock 2 and they like SS2 better! Go check it out!

In fact, I'm changing my sig to point more people to it.

  4. Evolved on Adventure Gaming: Rest In Peace? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Now, take out your hardcore MMORPG. Remove the FPS which is just about killing and more killing.

What do you have? Resident Evil types. Zelda:WindWaker types. Genre busters (a la the "Theif" series, Deus Ex, System Shock 1&2). Those are all evolved Adventure games.

And, yes, I was (and still am) a HUGE fan of the adventure genre. Quest for Glory (formerly "Hero's Quest") lured me in, Monkey Island kept me from leaving.

Seriously, go buy Thief 2, System Shock 2, or Deus Ex. Yes, they are a First Person perspective, but they are very much an adventure genre.

After all, until recently when anime started entering the mainstream in the US it had an almost entirely geek fanbase.

Linux has an almost entirely geek fanbase, but I suggest that the same amount of geeks (if not more) are windows users.

Actually, if you look at the "Infiltration" mod of UT, you'll find even better levels, better and more realistic weapons (like an M4, which you can add a grenade launcher to), no 'winner gets advantage' after every round (how is the loser supposed to get back into the game if you reward the winner with the better weapons? Is that balance?). All in all, its a much superior game to CS, but no one plays it.

So you need wizbangs and graphics to LURE people in, then the gameplay/realism/fun to keep them playing. You can't win with just one or the other.

The first bit is a bit cheesy with the zombies, but by the time the game is over, you will be scared crapless (seriously, SS2 was the only game to truely "scare" me).

  12. FPS innovation on Counter-Strike Xbox Screenshots · · Score: 2, Interesting

Honestly, the first time FPS had innovation was the beloved Starsiege:Tribes. Then there was the FPS/RPG twists of System Shock 2, and Deus Ex. The Thief series added some twists. CS, though, isn't anything really 'innovating,' IMHO. Perhaps the next Thief that IonStorm is working on will help out a bit. BF1942 adds a good team aspect that I haven't seen since Tribes. Metroid:Prime makes the 1-player only FPS the best I've played since Halflife.

My suggestion? Try BF1942 and Metroid:Prime for some FPS goodness until something new comes out.

  13. Next generation ads (IMHO) on Are Plain-Text Ads Doomed? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The next generation ads will be much more intrusive, but much less annoying. A good example is going to McDonald's in the game "The Sims".

Ads will start getting integrated right into what you are doing (especially games). This isn't, necessarily, a bad thing. It'll help keep the consumer costs down for the product, and aren't as annoying and attention-stealing as popups or banners.

Would this be considered a text ad? I'd say so, unless you want to classify it into a new class, like 'integrated ad.'

I have to say this is a major point. This is why you don't see people using open source. If my DB goes down, I call up Oracle, and make them bring someone down here to fix the problem. If my open source DB goes down, I crap my pants and hope to keep my job.

What does proprietary software have that Open Source doesn't? Insurance.

The best way to knock over oracle is to start up a company that supports open source for a fee (which is cheaper than running oracle for a year).

Well, you can read some books on using DirectX9 for .Net, or even play some games that were made with directX and .net.

While computers gain more powerful hardware (faster CPUs, bigger memory, etc...) the coding for games will go forward to the newer languages that makes coding easier. You may not like it, but don't worry. There's always jobs for those with assembly knowledge.

And, for what its worth, I think game coding in Java will start becoming a reality in the next five years (and not just on PDAs and mobile phones)...
