The radio modems we are using here are speced at an anorexic 2400 baud!
And wait, it gets worse. Two-way radio is the classic half-duplex medium of communication; that is, you are either transmitting--push to talk--or receiving, not both at the same time. This, plus the robust error-checking protocols implemented by the modem hardware itself, means the actual link experience is more on the order of 300 baud. Does anyone remember 300 baud? Unless you measure your patience with radio-carbon, your dreams of remote login sessions will be dashed and splattered. As for on-line browsing, chat, video-conferencing and the like, well, best to not even think about it.
Cool technology, but its still years behind...
Maybe they've got some of those old BBS programs running. 300 baud + BBS would be great to reminisce to...
Is it just me, or does that just appear to be like an 'emacs windows manager'?
Basically, a maximized emacs window with all the commands you can use without a mouse, and no bloat.
I personally find no need to have a web browser built into my phone (or for that matter, I have no use for a phone that CAN have a web browser built in).
I have similar feelings and a simple solution for us both:
Don't buy one!
Just because you don't like the idea doesn't mean technology should stop right then and there. Sheesh.
I think I'm agreeing with the AC that replied to you. Just sounds like a really technical guy. He never claimed on being employed by Kodak, just to have worked on the prototype. Might the navy be interested in the technology? He did say he was in R&D.
What's the point in the shout out about moderation? Don't like it? Make him a foe, and set foes to -15 moderation.
how he sees ReplayTV PVR stacking up against Tivo this upcoming holiday season
The only way ReplayTV can get a heads up over TiVo is to sell the software to digital cable companies to use it in their cable boxes.
TiVo has a bigger following, and a partnership with DirecTV. It just has a foothold over all other DVRs.
This "person" is obviously an invention of Microsoft marketing... no name. (Apple made a great move to have everyone in their "switch" ads identify themselves at the end
Is there any verification that the apple switchers aren't just made up names? If they aren't, its scary people would give that kinda stuff out (have you seen some of the websites where people are obsessed over the 'switchers'?).
Honestly, I take them both as fakes. Sure, apple did a better job with it, but the whole deal isn't anything special. Look at any industry, you'll see people market that there product is better than the competition for reasons A and C, but the competition markets that there product is better than the original for reasons B and D. Marketing is a load, and most slashdotters can see through the sludge.
This isn't anything special. Why is everyone up in arms about it? Just a story to insult the MS?
It is not endless in that you just scroll forever, its just when you reach the pipe at the end it returns you back to the beginning of minus world. The 'end' they speak of is the pipe that returns you to the beginning.
How about wearing a giant vagina (it is a work-safe link to abc news)??
Just don't wear it to school like this kid did;-)

A Name for My Major?

I completely agree. You are going to KILL yourself in this ragged market with, basically, a triple major. You'll only be able to get a job with one of those degrees, and, because of the three degrees, your expected pay will be high, and someone else a little less overqualified will get the job.
Did you even talk to a guidance councelor, or did you just do what ever the hell you wanted?
Sorry to sound harsh, but you are shooting yourself for persuing all those majors in school. It would of been better to major in one (like CS), minor in another (like physics), and keep one as a hobby (botany). That would of helped you in your future endevours.
Ditto here. Although I may start teaching night school in community college soon, and when I retire I'd like to be a math/physics/computer teacher in a local high school.
Seeing as the linked article is a giant "Monster Game/Monster Cable" advertisement, I'd assume that the author wants you to use them.
I wish they would have put more of a reason why to use that brand with comparisons of it to other brands of cable. This is what really leads me to believe that it is an advertisement more than an article.
Also, do you see this as/. worthy? Its almost like learning how to build a computer from scratch. I think most of us know how to.
I guess it'd be a sectional article, but there is no section for tech or games.
Do my a favor. Go do a search on your favorite job-market search engine for J2EE jobs.
You'll find more than most any other language.
Java != dot-com
Companies (not dot-coms, but companies like insurance and non-web based) still make websites (internal and external). Java is the answer for enterprise size sites.
The future of gaming is what every NES/atari/old school gamer has dreamed of. They always complain that games today are just copies of what is popular (how many quake/fps copycats can you name?).
Well, modding is changing all of that. When a game comes out, modders push the limits of the engines to do anything they want... the clincher is... they do it for free.
Now, for game designers to still make money, they have to come out with new and unique ideas. Doing your standard FPS ain't gonna do it anymore. Even single-player FPS with great plots are being done with mods. The games of tomorrow will have to be bigger and better than mod writers (or have a bigger and better engine), which means the days of the FPS copy-cat will soon be over.
Also, to note, some publishers are encouraging the modding community to step forward into the gaming industry. Just look at Garage Games. They are selling their Torque Engine (the engine behind tribes 2) for $100 for a non-commercial license (and if you make a commercial product with it, no problem, as long as garage games is your publisher).
This would be exciting if I didn't already know what is going to happen.
This isn't like Signs or some other movie I'm anticipating without knowing the full story. Its just a very good interpretation of a book I've read.
Mind you, I'll be seeing it opening night, but the trailers just don't excite me like movies where I DON'T know the full plot.
The internet has brought many people together to do anything from games to clubs. But one of the largest unities brought together was the Open Source movement. Did you ever fathom the idea that developers around the world would unite to share source code and develop major applications (ie - linux) that is free for all?
What are your views of the Open Source Movement?
Why do you assume I do? I'm one of those guys that thinks Linux isn't the best for everything, and windows isn't the worst for everything.
I, personally, run SuSE7.2 at home. I also have an XP box. I just don't like being told that if I run windows, I'm an enemy to open source.
I, honestly, think that there is no need to fight MS at all to support Linux and Open Source. Use what you like, no need to fling poo. MS HAS to fight Linux because they live in capitalism. Linux doesn't (RedHat, et al, live in capitalism for support). So linux has no need to fight back.
So let me get this straight...
I have a Windows machine for my gaming needs (and work, if its Windows-centric), and a Linux box that is my coding/server.
So it looks like I'm an enemy to Linux, then.
I'm guessing that'd make a lot of people that run AND support Linux an enemy of Linux.
Sorry, but if that's the case, Linux isn't going to win. And its your philosophy that will kill it.
They consistently put out interesting tech stories with no bias towards or against Microsoft, and I they seem take their journalistic impartiality seriously
The issue, though, is Slashdot IS biased, and always writes against MS (even if its something good MS does, its written with a slander tone).
What do I think of/.'s bias? I think its immature.
Parents making a decision, you just need to know one thing: Does your child easily descriminate between fantasy and reality?
If he/she can, then games aren't going to have a detrimental effect.
If he/she can't, start the conselling early. Maybe you can make a difference if you start now.

Good luck on the job market... you'll need it...
But they both can't be used at the same time (both require the original UPC).
First of all Circuit City has a $100 rebate on it atm, but something to note:
After 1 year, the 'unlimited internet' becomes something like $30 for 15MB a month. Good luck breaking your browsing habits after a year.
